Chapter 138: The Paternity Test Results

Wendy walked out of the Lucas mansion with Jake.

What happened earlier had surprised her, but it hadn’t affected her much. She didn’t have high hopes for this family in the first place anyway.

After they walked out, Jake tugged at Wendy’s hand and asked in a quiet and adorable voice, "Mummy, are you angry?"

Jake had been observing Wendy the whole time because he was afraid that Winnie would bully her. Thankfully, Wendy had responded very cleverly and Winnie ended up losing the argument.

Wendy shook her head and smiled back at him faintly. "No, I’m not angry. Are you hungry? What do you want for lunch?"

Jake rubbed his tiny stomach and nodded. "I’m hungry! Let’s go home, I really want to eat the fried chicken that Auntie Zess makes."

"Sure. Give Zess a call and tell her we’re on our way home for lunch now." Wendy bundled him into the car and drove off.

On Monday, Wendy went to work on time as usual.

She wasn’t surprised to see Michael already waiting at her desk when she arrived.

"I’m sorry about what happened the last time," said Michael apologetically. He hadn’t dared to run after her after she had walked out because he felt that she might feel even more repulsed.

"Mr. Lucas, if that’s what you’re here for, then an apology is not necessary," replied Wendy flatly with no emotion in her voice. "I didn’t take it to heart at all."

She had never been bothered by Winnie in the first place. Out of everybody in the Lucas family. the only one she cared about was Mrs. Lucas. The rest were unimportant to her.

Since she hadn’t taken the incident to heart, Michael’s apology became meaningless as well.

In fact, Michael had been most afraid that Wendy would react this way.

She continued, "In any case, Mrs. Lucas gained nothing out of me."

"Then..." Michael sighed inwardly and said, "Sorry for disturbing you."

This time, Michael turned to walk out of her office without waiting for her to tell him to leave. But when he reached the door, he suddenly stopped for a while and turned back again.

"Wendy..."

Before he could go on, Wendy scoffed and said, "I still have a lot of work to do, sol won’t see you out."

She thought for a moment that Michael was seriously here just to apologize. But since he wasn’t, she quickly cut him off before he could say any more nonsense that was a complete waste of time.

Actually, Michael wanted to talk to her about Winnie. He was sure that Winnie had plucked some hair from his head, so she was probably going to find some way to do that paternity test. But since Wendy didn’t want to listen to him at all, he swallowed everything he meant to say.

After all, if Winnie wanted to do a paternity test, she would need Jake’s hair as well. That wouldn’t be easy to obtain. So he decided not to say anything and left her office.

Once Wendy was done with work for the day, she knocked off on time and headed home.

The minute she stepped into the house, Jake pounced into her arms and said with a grim look on his face, "Mummy, I ran into a group of strange people when I finished school today."

"A group of strange people?" She frowned and squatted down to ask him, "What made them strange?"

"I was about to walk out of the school gate to look for Auntie Zess when a group of people blocked my way. I thought they were going to kidnap me, but all they did was to carry me to one side, pulled at my head for a while, then left me alone."

"Pulled at your head?" Wendy became really puzzled by this. She looked Jake up and down. It was true that she hadn’t cut his hair in a while and it was a little on the long side, but it was still well within the rules.

Who were those people? Why did they pull at her son’s head?

"Are you hurt anywhere?" Wendy checked Jake over for any injuries.

"Mummy, I’m fine," said Jake as he shook his head. "I waited until you were home to tell you about it precisely because I’m not hurt."

She checked him carefully and was relieved when she was certain that he really wasn’t hurt in any way.

She already guessed that these people were sent by Winnie, since Winnie had been so insistent on doing a paternity test the day before. But since Jake was perfectly fine and she had no other evidence to prove that Winnie was behind this, she couldn’t confront Winnie either.

So she had no choice but to let the matter rest. She instructed both Jake and Zess to be careful and alert at all times.

Winnie took Michael and Jake’s hair to the hospital to get the paternity test done. She was certain that Jake wasn’t Michael’s. Otherwise, Wendy would have done this test a long time ago. And because of this belief, she also believed that once she brought the negative paternity result to Mrs. Lucas, Mrs. Lucas would become disappointed in Wendy and stop siding with her.

Once Mrs. Lucas stopped siding with Wendy, she would be able to finally get what she wanted.

She waited around until the doctor was finally done with the test and asked immediately, "What’s the result? Does it prove that they’re not father and son?"

The doctor looked at her strangely and said, "Most people do this test to prove that the two members they are testing are related. Why are you hoping otherwise?"

"Just tell me the results. Are they father and son or not?" Winnie didn’t want to tell the doctor too much and just wanted the results.

"The result is that these two are indeed father and son." The doctor was about to throw in a congratulation’ but decided against it when he saw the look of horror on Winnie’s face.

"How can that be?!" Winnie snatched the test results from the doctor’s hand in disbelief.

She couldn’t understand any of the medical jargon in the earlier pages, but she could understand the summary.

There was a 99.99% chance that the two were related by blood...

"Did you make a mistake somewhere?" Winnie couldn’t believe it even though she was holding onto the report.

Or rather, Winnie refused to believe it.

She did want to have grandchildren, but she didn’t like Wendy, and most certainly didn’t like any children by her.

Most importantly, Wendy wasn’t able to elevate her current status in society.

She had refused to divorce Anthony because she didn’t want to lose to that vamp. But now, Christian’s company was doing better by the day. It wasn’t as successful as MC Enterprise yet, but it was still considered a fairly large corporation.

That was also why Anthony was still able to hold his head high. Otherwise, he would probably have never shown his face again after he was chased out of MC Enterprise five years ago.

She had been trying so hard to matchmake Yonina with Michael not only because she liked Yonina, but more so because she liked Yonina’s family background.

Yonina was the only daughter of the current head of the Collins family. So if the two of them got married, it would be as good as a marriage between both families and their companies. With the power of both companies combined, MC Enterprise would certainly defeat Christian’s Company.

Once Michael’s status was elevated and stable, as his mother, her status would rise along with his. That way, she’ll drive that Lily Yates to an early grave.

After all, Lily was pinning all her hopes on her son. So, as long as Michael became more powerful than Christian and forced Christian’s business to collapse, Lily would be unable to get her way. But now, the paternity test result had turned out to be positive.

This completely messed up all of Winnie’s plans.

She couldn’t let this happen!

If she brought this result back, Mrs. Lucas and Michael would only end up standing even more firmly on Wendy’s side.

She couldn’t let this happen.

She grabbed hold of the doctor’s hand and narrowed her eyes as a maniacal look took over her face. "Help me to produce a fake paternity report. You can name your price"

Wendy received a call from an unknown number.

She pressed the button to pick up the call up and the voice on the other line surprised her.

"Wendy Stewart, come to the mansion right now. I need to speak to you on behalf of the Lucas family."

That was Winnie’s voice.

Her voice and the way she spoke made Wendy nearly roll her eyes.

Winnie wanted to speak to her on behalf of the Lucas family and even commanded her to head to the mansion immediately? There was no way she was complying with that for no good reason.

Wendy replied flatly, "I’m sorry, but I don’t have the time."

She nearly hung up when she heard Winnie’s infuriated voice shriek, "You don’t have the guts, huh!"

Wendy really couldn’t understand why Winnie continued to harass her.

Couldn’t Winnie tell that she had no intention of returning to the Lucas family?

In the past, she had been stupid enough to fall for Michael. But now, she wasn’t going to continue being stupid.

She had the ability to take care of her two children, so she didn’t see the need to put up with the Lucas family.

Did this woman think she was a pushover?

"Mrs. Lucas, have you heard of the saying, ’even a rabbit will bite if it’s pushed into a corner? Did you think you could gain anything from me by doing this?" Wendy didn’t sound happy or angry but she certainly didn’t sound pleased.

"I’m warning you! If you don’t come here right now, I’m going to blow this matter up! If you.." Before Winnie could go on, Wendy got annoyed and hung up on her.

Winnie nearly flung her phone against the wall when she heard Wendy hang up on her. But she stopped herself in time. She had to call Wendy again.

This time, Wendy didn’t even bother picking the call up. And when she called a third time, Wendy blocked her number. There was no point in keeping the number of a person she didn’t care about anyway.

After that, Wendy got the peace and quiet she wanted.

On the other hand, Winnie was fuming mad. She was the eldest daughter-in-law of the Lucas family and was someone reputable within Lake City after all.

Even though there were some who laughed at her or said nasty things behind her back, they always behaved politely toward her.

Wendy was the first person to have ever hung up on her.

Since Wendy wasn’t giving in, Winnie decided that she would have to head to the office to look for her instead.

Meanwhile, Wendy concentrated on her work once the phone stopped ringing.

Jill knocked on the door and walked in, passed her a document and started briefing her on the. day’s appointments and meetings.

After she was done with her reporting, Jill was about to walk out of the office when Winnie barged in aggressively.

Wendy was a little stunned but wasn’t particularly surprised either. Winnie had called her repeatedly before this after all.

She put her pen down and looked up at Winnie as she said in an icy voice, "Mrs. Lucas, as a dignified lady from a reputable family in Lake City, don’t you know that you ought to knock on the door before entering someone’s office?"

"Knock on the door?" Winnie scoffed and walked over to Wendy, raising her hand to give Wendy a tight slap. But Wendy reacted quickly by using her foot to push against the floor and causing the office chair to roll away from Winnie.

Winnie’s slap cut through the air but landed on nothing. The force of her own actions nearly made her lose her balance.

"How dare you move away!" Winnie shouted angrily as she marched forward to try and slap Wendy again.

This time, Jill went up and held Winnie’s wrist back. "Mrs. Lucas, I don’t think it is appropriate for you to make trouble like this in Miss Swift’s office."

"And who on earth are you even? How dare you touch me?!" Winnie pushed Jill aside roughly.

Jill was in high heels, so she stumbled a few steps backward before regaining her balance. Wendy stood up and stared straight at Winnie. She was surprised that Winnie had barged in so unreasonably and tried to slap her almost immediately.

Since Winnie dared to do something like this in public, it meant that Winnie was already well prepared.
