Chapter 1623: Chapter 1623: Knew He Would Ask Eventually
Lately, they found out that there have been too many women coming to see Prince Louis.
On average, several batches a day.
And Prince Louis treats each of them with cold detachment, not caring whether they’re beautiful or what their status is.
"It’s really strange. Doesn’t he want to be king? He’s just returned to the royal court and isn’t trying to win over the officials?"
"He really is a prince indifferent to fame and fortune."
"He might be a bit stupid."
The girls were puzzled, discussing it privately among themselves.
Ian Shelby gives off an air of being unconcerned with worldly matters; he doesn’t make any moves to win over any faction, spending most of his time in his own palace gardening.
So nobody really understood what he was thinking, not even Catherine found it easy to comprehend.
But judging from his hiring of a Raban doctor, he especially hopes that the King can recover, showing he’s a filial son.
However, whether he harbors ulterior motives is difficult for others to judge.
It’s just that most people know the King’s illness seems unlikely to improve...
The King’s succession is a matter of time, and everyone is keeping an eye on the movements in the palace.
Prince Louis’s palace, the verdant, darkened rooftop.
The servants brought in plates of fruit and snacks, along with drinks and tea, then withdrew after paying their respects.
Ian Shelby and Arthur leaned against the railing, the tables and chairs behind them still in their original places.
"Do you remember this place?" Ian Shelby propped his hands on the railing, squinting as he looked into the distance.
Arthur also propped his hands on the railing, glancing at him and then smiling as he gazed into the distance, "Of course I remember."
Then, some childhood scenes began to surface clearly in their minds, scene by scene.
"After you left, I came here alone three times," Arthur said, restraining his emotions and smiling, "Every day the servants would clean here, keeping everything as it was, though many years have passed."
Ian Shelby also felt a bit sentimental, recalling that last time he stood here gazing afar, he needed to stand on a stool.
Arthur turned his gaze to him, "Louis, I thought you wouldn’t come back."
"Over the years, I’ve occasionally been in touch with my uncle," Ian Shelby confessed softly, then turned his gaze, "Didn’t he tell you?"
Arthur shook his head, "No."
Something flickered in Ian Shelby’s eyes, and he nodded, not saying more, so the father probably didn’t know his whereabouts either.
He never asked his uncle not to tell the father, but the uncle never actively told the father.
"Have you been doing well outside over the years?" Arthur asked with concern, in the manner of a close friend.
"Pretty well." Ian Shelby didn’t intend to reveal much to him, so he changed the subject, "Can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead." Arthur’s smile was genuine, willing to share whatever he knew, "As long as it’s something I know, I can tell you!"
Despite the passage of time, he still regarded Louis as his best friend.
But Ian Shelby was wary of him, and this wariness extended not just to him but to everyone in the royal family, including Uncle Eden.
Anyone by the father’s side could be the poisoner.
The closest people are often the ones who can hurt you the most deeply.
Ian Shelby turned, picked up two glasses of wine, and handed one to him, "How have things been between Father and Catherine these past years?"
Arthur understood why he was asking this question, and he expected he would ask sooner or later.
Arthur understood the regret and sorrow in his heart.
Holding the wine glass, Arthur pondered how best to answer, how to state the facts without hurting him.
