Chapter 1540: Chapter 1540: This Night Is Truly Magical

Carlotta Sterling began to unbuckle her seatbelt, preparing to open the door and get out of the car.

"Um..." Nathan Mills suddenly spoke, then turned his gaze towards her.

Her hand paused on the door handle, turning to meet his gaze, she softly asked, "What’s up?"

"I..." Nathan Mills quickly thought, "I’m a bit thirsty, can I come in for a glass of water?"

Carlotta was slightly taken aback, just about to agree when her gaze unintentionally fell on a bottle of mineral water inside the car, it was a full bottle, and she was momentarily distracted. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Nathan Mills saw it too, and hastily explained, "My stomach hasn’t been feeling well lately, I can’t drink anything cold."

Carlotta opened the car door, "Then come inside."

Nathan Mills also got out and followed her into the living room, the indoor lights instantly brightened, fully automated home installation was indeed great.

Carlotta walked directly to the kitchen, saying, "Just sit for a moment, I need to quickly boil some water, it won’t take long, just two minutes."

"Okay, thank you." Nathan Mills stood in front of the sofa, looking around. He was thinking about how to start the conversation, having had no preparation beforehand.

The sound of water filling in the kitchen echoed... after a while, the sound of water stopped, and shortly after, Carlotta came out.

Their gazes met, Nathan Mills appeared somewhat awkward, nearly forgetting that this was actually his home.

"Please, sit down." Carlotta softly spoke, retracting her gaze and sitting down on the sofa, the silence between them growing the more they spent time together, leaving her somewhat at a loss.

"Um..." Nathan Mills gathered his words, "Carlotta, actually..."

Snap!

"Ah!" Carlotta screamed in fright, instinctively standing up.

The whole house was plunged into darkness, a power outage!

"Don’t move!" Nathan Mills decisively took a few steps towards her, grasping her arm in the darkness.

Carlotta’s fear of the dark was a problem she couldn’t change since childhood, Nathan Mills knew that.

"Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, it’s okay." He comforted her like he did over twenty years ago when they first got married.

Carlotta had no regard for dignity anymore, tightly clutching Nathan Mills’s arm, her body shivering, Nathan Mills immediately pulled her into his embrace, "It’s okay, don’t be scared."

Being held protectively in his arms, the sense of fear significantly dissipated.

"I’ll check the fuse box." Nathan Mills said, not intending to let go of her, but she hugged him tightly, fear beginning to grow again, almost begging him not to leave!

"I..." Nathan Mills hugged her, softly comforting, "Don’t be scared, I’ll take you with me." He looked out the window, assessing, "This isn’t a widespread outage, other houses still have power, it might be a blown fuse or a loose circuit, trust me, I can fix it."

Saying this, he carefully led her towards the fuse box, Carlotta cooperating well.

Since this was his house, he knew exactly where things were, and turned on the flashlight on his phone.

Carlotta was genuinely afraid of the dark, when she was little, a neighboring girl forcibly took her to a haunted house, scaring her so badly she spent two days in the hospital, leaving a psychological scar.

Carlotta was no longer concerned with cleanliness, nor was she apprehensive, all she wanted now was a sense of security, and she couldn’t care about much else.

With the help of the phone’s light, they stumbled to the fuse box, Nathan Mills freeing a hand to open it, "Don’t be scared, don’t be scared, I’ll shine some light inside." Then he patted her shoulder, trying to lift his other hand.

Without the protective embrace, Carlotta instinctively clutched tightly to his shirt at his waist, trembling, and smelling the unique scent on him, the steady heartbeat momentarily disoriented her.

This familiar yet unfamiliar feeling always torturing her at unexpected moments.

The past played back in her mind like an interwoven film.
