Chapter 125: So, what are you?
"Physically, Miss Starling is fine."
Lila answered.
Lucian sighed in relief.
"She had minor injuries along her back, deep tissue bruising, a mild lumbar strain, and a few stress tears around the lower spine."
"How did she get injured?"
Sarah frowned in confusion.
Lucian’s expression changed, he knew the answer.
It must be during the time he jumped in the air with her, he did take most of the impact, but even then, a normal human shouldn’t go through what Evelyn did.
Lucian clenched his fists at that—
He was too careless.
But then—
"It doesn’t matter, I healed her."
Lila shook her head.
"She is completely fine now."
Lucian looked at Lila, Sarah blinked as well.
"You healed her?"
Elise questioned directly.
They weren’t supposed to do that.
They weren’t supposed to do anything that science could not explain.
Lila however, just shook her head.
"She has seen werewolves transform right before her very eyes. Pretending the world is normal is pointless now, might as well use something supernatural for her good. The woman is already going through a lot, I didn’t want her to bear physical pain on top of that."
Elise turned silent.
That made sense.
They couldn’t possibly fool her, not unless they charmed her and forcefully removed or altered the memory from her mind.
"How is she?"
Sarah questioned.
"As I said, she is fine physically."
"And... otherwise?"
Lila remained silent for a second, then—
"She is not talking."
Elise exhaled.
"That makes sense."
Sarah nodded slowly.
"Monsters she had never seen in her life came after her today, the people she had been with for weeks were suddenly jumping from one building to another, she...
She saw too much today.
Her entire world view collapsed in front of her very eyes."
The rest nodded at those words as well. Lucian could relate to them the most.
"Did she say anything at all?"
Suddenly, Elise asked another question and Lila—
Her eyes shifted to Lucian.
Everyone in the room noticed that, so did Lucian.
"She told me to tell her the moment Lucian came back."
And Lucian paused.
The teasing, careless smile on his face was now completely gone, the three women noticed the change very clearly.
That was when Lucian stood up.
"I will talk to her."
He decided.
"Are you sure you should...?"
Sarah asked with an uncertain look on her face. Lucian looked at her, then he gave it another thought and he—
"Yes, I am sure."
He nodded.
He would need to face her eventually, might as well do it now. After all, there was no ’cushioning’ this anymore.
She knows.
"Alright."
Sarah nodded. Elise didn’t stop him either, in a normal situation, she would have warned him not to say anything careless, to not mistakenly reveal the existence of the supernatural world but in the situation they were in right now—
There was no point in any of that.
Not anymore.
Lucian didn’t say anything anymore either, he walked to her door, then, he paused for a short second and—
He walked in.
The lights inside were dim, the curtains were drawn, a glass of water sat untouched on the bedside table.
Evelyn was sitting near the window, there was a blanket placed around her shoulders though it didn’t seem like she had noticed it.
Lucian looked at her from a distance, his focus was on her heartbeat.
It was slow, a little too slow actually. Lucian narrowed his eyes at that, trying to understand what that meant.
That was when Evelyn, who noticed movement around her, slowly raised her head. Her eyes quickly found him. For a second, the two of them stared at each other in silence until...
"You are back."
Evelyn let out a weak smile.
"Long day, huh?"
Lucian grinned.
"Very long."
Evelyn chuckled softly. Lucian slowly walked towards her, he made very sure to see her reaction, if she had flinched for even the slightest second, he would have stopped right that instant.
But—
Not only did she not flinch, she lightly pointed at the chair in front of hers, gesturing him to sit. Lucian nodded, he walked slowly, still carefully focusing on her reactions.
Evelyn noticed that and—
"You are so different now."
She commented. Lucian looked at her and she chuckled.
"You practically forced me out of the car back then.
You were ordering me around with that serious look on your face, it was as if you were an entirely different person."
"I am sorry."
Lucian apologised sincerely.
"Hmm? Why would you apologise for it?
I, for one, found it quite charming."
Her eyes shone for a very short moment.
"You should show that side a little more."
Lucian looked at her, a little surprised. He was not expecting that, not right now. He noticed her heartbeat, it was starting to return to normal, that was a good sign.
Wait...
Was it a good sign?
Lucian didn’t know.
He looked at her again, her shoulders had eased, her eyes that seemed like they had lost all their shine now seemed comparatively normal as well.
She did look a little shaken but... she seemed fine in general.
And that made Lucian frown.
Was he missing something?
He wondered in his head, so he looked at her again, this time even more carefully but then—
"Those were werewolves, correct?"
Evelyn asked a direct question.
"What...?"
Lucian blinked.
"The ones who attacked us today.
Werewolves, right?
Or are they called something else?"
Lucian remained silent for a long while, almost as if he was considering what to say and what not to.
Should he hide it?
How would he even hide it in the first place?
He thought about it for a good few seconds, Evelyn waited for him patiently, he looked into her eyes again and finally—
"Yes, they were."
He nodded.
Evelyn’s pupils dilated for a second before they returned to normal and...
"So they are real..."
Lucian only smiled weakly.
He did it.
He really did it.
As for the rest of the conversation, honestly, he feared it. He had no clue what Evelyn might ask and Evelyn—
"So, what are you?"
She directly asked the most difficult question.
