Chapter 216: Chapter 216 The Man Margaret Chose

Rose felt a roar in her ears.

She struggled to contain her excitement, her fingers clenching tightly around the phone.

“Really?”

God knew how long she had been waiting for this moment.

She thought Ryan’s confrontation with Margaret yesterday must have had some effect.

It must have made Margaret realize how determined she was.

Perhaps she had finally understood that forcing things on her was not the answer.

For the first time in a long while, Rose felt a trace of gratitude toward Ryan for his reckless actions. At the very least, they had given her a glimmer of hope.

Margaret spoke in her usual calm tone.

“However, there is one condition.”

“Go ahead.”

“You told me before that you had fallen in love with another man. I’ve given it some thought. If you truly love someone, I won’t stand in your way. Bring that young man here and let me meet him. If he is truly a good man, I’ll give my blessing to the two of you.”

The smile on Rose’s lips slowly faded.

She had never expected Margaret to make such a request.

At the time, she had simply made the story up.

Where was she supposed to find someone to play along?

Trevor?

That was clearly impossible.

Trevor’s status was far too sensitive.

If he became involved, it would only create more problems. After all, the two families had always been secretly at odds.

The rivalry between the Knight and Robinson families was no mere rumor.

Rose fell silent.

Margaret immediately became displeased.

“So you really were lying to me. Why would you do that, child?”

Rose suddenly found herself speechless.

She remained silent for only a couple of seconds.

As the matriarch of the Knight family, Margaret was exceptionally perceptive.

Rose wanted to say something—anything—to save her divorce certificate.

But before she could speak, Margaret continued.

“Since you don’t have anyone like that, I’ll introduce someone to you. He’s the grandson of an old friend of mine, only a few years older than you. He’s upright, gentle, and a rare young talent. He has also reached marriageable age. Go meet him and get to know him. If you hit it off, we can discuss the wedding.”

Rose frowned.

She sensed Margaret’s underlying attitude.

Either she remained tied to Ryan, or she was pushed toward someone else.

But a blind date?

It was simply absurd.

And it was being arranged by her ex-husband’s grandmother.

“If you agree, I’ll return the divorce certificate to you afterward.”

Margaret dangled a temptation Rose could not refuse.

Rose tightened her grip on the phone and took a deep breath.

“All right. I’ll go.”

To get the certificate back, there was nothing she wouldn’t do.

It was only a blind date.

She was already divorced.

What harm could it do?

Besides, only with the divorce certificate could she secure legal custody of Ariel.

She had waited too long for Ryan to give it to her.

She didn’t want to wait any longer.

After ending the call, Margaret had someone deliver an invitation to a luxury jewelry brand’s gala dinner.

The man she was being introduced to was the host of the event.

At the same time, she received a phone call.

“Miss Bennett?”

The man’s voice was warm and gentle.

“My name is Grayson Cooper. I’m the person you’ll be meeting tonight. Did you receive the invitation? When you arrive, please give me a call beforehand, and I’ll come pick you up.”

Rose could sense his politeness and thoughtfulness.

Although she felt somewhat guilty for attending with ulterior motives, she figured she could explain everything honestly later.

“Okay.”

“Then I look forward to meeting you.”

“Okay.”

Rose was not someone who opened up easily.

Very few people could make her lower her guard and reveal her true self.

As a result, she could only remain polite and reserved.

The other man did not seem to mind her distant attitude.

He simply smiled and ended the call with impeccable tact.

Rose let out a sigh of relief.

She looked at the invitation.

Margaret had arranged this blind date, and she wasn’t sure whether Ryan knew about it.

But Ryan probably wouldn’t care about such things anyway.

So she had no intention of informing him.

The event was a formal gala.

Rose selected a classic, elegant evening gown and headed to the venue when the time came.

The luxury jewelry brand’s gala was a grand affair.

Such events were common in high society.

Numerous celebrities and socialites attended, making the evening’s jewelry sales even more impressive.

However, this was Rose’s first time attending such an event.

Marrying Ryan had brought her into this social circle, but because their marriage had remained private, he had never taken her to gatherings like this.

Rose did not immediately call Grayson.

After entering the venue, she saw many famous actors and actresses serving as the evening’s star guests and helping promote the jewelry.

Media reporters, socialites, and wealthy guests filled the ballroom.

Rose had never considered herself extravagant.

Although she had plenty of money, she rarely spent it lavishly.

However, Diana’s birthday was approaching, and Rose thought she might purchase a gift for her tonight.

After all, Diana loved sparkling jewelry more than anything else.

She walked into the main hall.

Rose saw countless wealthy socialites taking photographs with popular celebrities.

She had never been particularly interested in celebrities, so the scene failed to attract her attention.

After looking around briefly, she took out her phone to call Grayson.

Before she could dial, a familiar voice came from behind her.

“Rose?”

She turned around.

James was wearing a perfectly tailored suit.

He appeared genuinely surprised to see her.

A complicated expression crossed his face—something soft, yet tinged with indescribable awkwardness.

“Mm-hmm,” Rose replied with a nod.

James’s feelings toward Rose had become increasingly complicated.

A few days earlier, because of Trevor, he had found it difficult not to direct his anger toward her.

But then Rose had saved his grandmother.

He had witnessed everything himself.

She had proven that she was an excellent doctor and had even set aside their previous conflicts.

As a result, he felt somewhat uncomfortable around her.

He wanted to thank her, yet something always stopped him.

“Why are you here too?” he finally asked.

“‘Too’?”

Rose immediately caught the key word.

James instantly realized he had misspoke.

He looked toward the crowd in the distance.

Rose followed his gaze.

Ryan stood out prominently among the guests. Even the handsome male celebrity standing beside him seemed overshadowed.

As the CEO of Kingswell, everyone knew who he was.

One female celebrity after another approached him, eager to make his acquaintance.

Some were even bold enough to ask, “Mr. Knight, may we take a picture with you?”

Ryan lowered his eyes.

Before he could answer, an elegant female voice sounded behind him.

“Ryan doesn’t like taking photos.”

Samantha, dressed in a white gown, stepped forward and naturally slipped her arm through Ryan’s.

The actresses immediately understood her meaning and instinctively looked toward Ryan.

Ryan did not pull away.

His voice remained polite yet distant.

“I’m sorry.”

He had rejected the actress’s request.

Immediately, envious glances fell upon Samantha from every direction.

A sweet smile spread across Samantha’s lips.

Watching the scene, Rose understood perfectly.

Ryan was rejecting every temptation for Samantha’s sake.

His boundaries were clear, and he was giving Samantha a strong sense of security.

Rose was genuinely surprised to run into Ryan here.

Especially since she had come tonight for a blind date.

The situation felt strangely awkward.

She did not want to run into Ryan face-to-face.

She was just about to say goodbye to James and leave.

At that moment, a man in the crowd spotted Rose.

A smile appeared on his face as he walked directly toward her.

“Miss Bennett? I’m Grayson Cooper.”
