Chapter 196: Chapter 196 I Know Your Uncle Knight
Rose hadn’t expected that, at this critical moment, things could become even more awkward.
But Ariel clearly didn’t share the complicated thoughts running through the adults’ minds. The moment she saw Trevor’s incoming call, a bright smile spread across her face.
Her dimples were absolutely adorable.
She immediately tapped to answer.
Trevor’s face appeared on the screen.
"Daddy! How’s the weather over there? Have you been eating well?" the little girl asked sweetly, her concern obvious.
A smile appeared on Trevor’s usually stoic face.
"It’s sunny. I just had a sandwich. It was okay."
Ariel immediately said, "We’re eating right now, but we have a guest."
Trevor raised an eyebrow.
"A guest?"
Ariel turned the camera toward Ryan, who sat across from her and Rose.
Trevor fell silent for several seconds.
Then he greeted him calmly.
"Mr. Knight."
Ryan leaned back in his chair, his expression unchanged.
"Mr. Robinson. It should only be four in the morning over there, shouldn’t it?"
Trevor replied, "Thank you for your concern, but no matter what time it is, I always make time to talk to my daughter."
Rose remained silent.
For some reason, the situation felt strangely unsettling.
Ariel asked curiously, "Daddy, are you also very close with this uncle?"
Trevor seemed to chuckle softly.
"You could say that. Your Uncle Knight and Daddy have known each other for many years."
Rose was suddenly startled by Trevor’s use of the words "Uncle Knight."
Was he simply speaking casually, or was it intentional?
After all, he knew perfectly well that Ryan was Ariel’s biological father.
Ryan sensed that Trevor’s words carried some hidden meaning, but he couldn’t quite identify it.
He lifted his eyes, glanced at Rose, and said, "Mr. Robinson seems quite comfortable entrusting his daughter to someone else."
Trevor replied calmly, "The child adores her. Since it’s her wish, naturally we should fulfill it."
That wish could be large or small.
Ryan understood the implication.
If Ariel insisted on Rose becoming her stepmother, Trevor would fulfill that wish as well.
Ryan offered no response. He merely said, "Ariel is very adorable."
Trevor smiled politely. "Then Mr. Knight should make plans with the woman he loves."
Rose didn’t look up.
The woman he loved was not his wife.
It was Samantha.
Throughout the entire conversation, Trevor never once mentioned Ryan and Rose’s marriage, as though he were deliberately pretending to know nothing.
At this point, Rose could no longer remain invisible.
She finally spoke. "When are you returning, Mr. Robinson?"
"There isn’t an exact date yet. I’ll let you know once everything is settled."
"All right."
Ariel immediately handed the phone to Rose so she could continue the video call, while she remained pressed against Rose’s side.
The scene looked remarkably like a wife and daughter chatting with their husband and father.
Ryan’s expression remained unchanged.
He quietly watched their warm interaction, his eyes filled only with cold detachment.
"Rose, I’d appreciate it if you could continue looking after her," Trevor said.
Rose’s heart softened slightly.
She understood exactly what Trevor meant.
He was deliberately making it appear as though he had entrusted his daughter to her, which would greatly reduce any suspicion about why Ariel was living with her.
Trevor was willingly giving her the role of a mother without arousing Ryan’s suspicions.
"All right," she agreed softly.
Ryan didn’t wait for the call to end.
He silently rose from his seat.
Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed Ariel sitting in her chair, swinging her little legs. One of her slippers had fallen onto the floor.
He walked over calmly, knelt on one knee, picked up the slipper, and gently slipped it back onto her foot.
At that moment, his own phone rang.
Rose glanced over.
She caught the name flashing briefly across the screen.
Ryan said nothing.
He simply turned and walked toward the door.
He didn’t even stay for dinner.
He was going to the person he truly wanted to be with.
As for her close relationship with Trevor and Trevor’s "daughter," Ryan—her husband of seven years—showed absolutely no reaction.
Not concern.
Not resentment.
Not jealousy.
Not anger.
Nothing at all.
He behaved like a detached bystander, completely indifferent as he walked away without a second thought.
Rose finally understood the truth.
Because he didn’t care, he didn’t get angry.
The realization only made her feel even more sorry for the woman she used to be.
Ariel looked toward the door before lowering her eyes to her slippers.
"Mom, does that uncle like me too?"
Rose was slightly stunned.
She couldn’t understand what Ryan was thinking or feeling.
Yet he possessed an unexpected gentleness and refinement that appeared only briefly, impossible to grasp.
His attitude toward Ariel had genuinely surprised her.
But she had no intention of telling Ariel about her biological father’s shortcomings.
Those were matters between adults.
She would never drag her daughter into them, forcing her to bear the weight of her parents’ conflicts or choose sides.
Ruffling her hair, Rose smiled.
"Our little sweetheart is so lovable. How could anyone not like you?"
*****
Rose spent the entire weekend playing with Ariel.
Ryan’s visit had gradually faded from her mind.
With Trevor helping to cover for her, she wasn’t worried that Ryan would become suspicious.
Just as she had expected, Ryan never appeared during the following two days.
Nor had he shown any suspicion toward Ariel.
He hadn’t even given her relationship with Trevor a second thought.
Everything remained calm and peaceful.
Monday morning.
As soon as Rose arrived at work, she finalized her schedule for the day.
Her robotic tumor surgery system needed further preparation.
She also needed to discuss product integration with potential partners before the official launch.
Caleb had already shortlisted several medical institutions and private hospitals.
Pointing to a high-end private hospital called Angel, he said, "I’ve already spoken with Director Blake. We’ve basically reached a preliminary agreement. Once the contract is signed, we’ll have a large volume of cases, and it’ll provide excellent exposure. Let’s discuss the details today."
"Have you scheduled a meeting?" Rose asked.
"Ten o’clock this morning."
Rose nodded. "Then I’ll handle the meeting myself. I understand the product better than anyone, and I can clearly explain its advantages."
Smart surgical technology wasn’t yet widely adopted in the United States, especially highly advanced robotic systems developed through technological breakthroughs.
She worried that if the technology wasn’t explained properly, it might affect the final outcome.
Caleb agreed.
Rose headed directly to the hospital.
High-end private hospitals served a completely different clientele. To win their business, one needed both exceptional service and clear advantages in technology and equipment.
Like Peace Hospital, Angel Hospital enjoyed an excellent reputation throughout the United States.
If this partnership succeeded, it would open the market even further.
After arriving, Rose informed the receptionist that she had an appointment.
However, the receptionist said apologetically, "I’m sorry, but you’ll need to wait a little longer. Our director is currently meeting with a distinguished guest."
Rose checked the time.
It was already nearly ten o’clock.
She had no choice but to wait.
What she hadn’t expected was to wait for more than an hour.
Rose quickly understood.
They were deliberately keeping her waiting.
And the most likely reason for it...
She calmly walked to the front desk.
"Who is the distinguished guest inside?"
