The next morning, Ning Chu once again arrived at Wen Yang’s rented apartment.

Today was Wen Yang’s first day at his new job, and he was feeling a bit nervous.

But Ning Chu’s arrival eased his anxiety, making him feel inexplicably more confident.

He stood at the door, his coat covered in lint from static electricity, while Ning Chu used a lint roller to clean it off for him. As she worked, she couldn’t stop asking questions: “Is the hotel far from here?”

“Not too far. It’s just three stops by bus, about ten minutes or so.”

“A high-end hotel... I bet the other waitresses are all really pretty, huh? Did you see them during the interview?”

“Yeah, they were pretty good-looking.”

Ning Chu’s hands paused mid-movement. “Which one caught your eye? I’m sure they’re all—”

“They’re all bad women. Not interested in any of them.”

“Mm, right. You’ve gotten quick with those answers~”

She chuckled, her large, bright eyes twinkling as she looked at Wen Yang. Her tone became slightly more serious: “Just be careful. Boys have to protect themselves when they’re out and about. Don’t let any perverts take advantage of you.”

“Don’t worry.”

Ning Chu crouched down to continue using the lint roller on his pants, reminding him, “If you’re unhappy with the job, we can quit. My mom has an electric scooter—you can use it to help pick up Hei Dou and maybe do food deliveries on the side.”

“There are some girls who’d do anything to get their hands on you, so don’t let yourself get tricked. If anything happens, call me right away.”

“...”

Yesterday, before lunch at Ning Chu’s house, Wen Yang had been subjected to fifteen minutes of nagging from Ning Yuan.

It seemed Ning Chu had inherited a bit of that same nagging skill.

“If I don’t leave now, I’ll be late on my first day.”

“Huh?”

Crouching on the floor, Ning Chu looked particularly small and delicate. She blinked up at him in confusion, her soft lips parting slightly.

Realizing what he meant, she quickly finished using the lint roller on his pants, jumped up, and started pushing him towards the door. “Then hurry up! Go to work! And remember to buy me a present with your first paycheck!”

“A gaming console?”

“We’ll see when the time comes.”

But Wen Yang didn’t budge. Even with the door wide open, he stood rooted to the spot. Turning back, he asked Ning Chu, “No kiss for good luck on my first day?”

“You’re already running late.”

“It won’t take long, right?”

Seeing him turn around and look down at her, Ning Chu rolled her eyes in exasperation. With a sigh, she stood on her tiptoes, wrapped her arms around his neck, and tried to reach up.

Too tall! I can’t reach!

She strained her toes even higher, unknowingly pressing her body closer against his.

Only then did Wen Yang lower his head to meet her halfway.

Ning Chu had intended to give him just a quick peck, but as soon as their lips touched, he gently held the back of her head, deepening the kiss before she could react.

“Mm!”

Didn’t he say he was running late?

So he’s just teasing me before leaving, huh?

Stop touching my waist!

Ning Chu shot Wen Yang a glare, but her frustration quickly melted into a soft, watery gaze as her legs grew weak. She had to hold onto his neck even tighter to keep herself from collapsing.

Just then, a door in the hallway creaked open, and a tenant stepped out with a trash bag. Hearing the faint sounds coming from Wen Yang’s apartment, the tenant turned curiously to look but saw nothing more than Wen Yang’s broad back.

Ning Chu froze in place, her eyes widening in panic.

She had never kissed Wen Yang in front of anyone before.

Hei Dou didn’t count—she’d been a cat back then.

Nervousness and shame surged through her, amplifying the thrill of the moment.

This is so exciting!

“I’ve got to go.”

Wen Yang finally pulled back, his face satisfied with a playful smile. “By the way, the soundproofing here is terrible. I fell asleep last night listening to the guy next door snoring.”

“...”

You totally did that on purpose.

With a weak sigh, Ning Chu let go of Wen Yang’s neck, and, following his lead, sat down at the edge of the bed.

“You’re such a lunatic...”

She gave him a resentful look, but he quickly closed the door and left.

Sitting on the bed for a moment to gather her composure, she sighed in frustration. “Great, I’m definitely going to get caught when I go home.”

Luckily, she’d already stashed some spare clothes here.

Ning Chu opened the bedside cabinet and took out her loungewear, her legs still feeling like jelly as she walked slowly to the bathroom, her steps unsteady like she was walking on clouds.

After taking a shower, all those complicated feelings washed away with the water.

Wen Yang would probably end up triggering some kind of plot event at work, so she decided to stay and deal with it later together.

With no energy supplements, handling things twice in one day would leave her too drained to focus on writing.

Dressed in shorts and a tank top, she threw on Wen Yang’s jacket and climbed into bed, placing her laptop on her lap with the covers over her legs. Leaning against the wall, she sent a quick message to her mom.

“Mom, I’ll probably come home in the afternoon. I won’t be back for lunch, so could you pick up Hei Dou?”

Her mother’s reply came quickly: “You’re at Wen Yang’s? Isn’t he at work today?”

“No, I’m out with some friends.”

“Which friends? These ones know you’ve turned into a girl? You won’t even tell your grandparents.”

“...” Ning Chu didn’t know how to respond for a moment, so she gave up and sent a half-joking reply: “Fine, I’ll come back later to stop getting in your way.”

Her mother sent back a laughing emoji.

Having dealt with her mom, Ning Chu cracked her knuckles and prepared to get some serious writing done.

Writing! Writing!

With no Hei Dou or mom to interrupt her, she was determined to get into the writing zone today, unlike her previous unproductive days.

Goal: 10,000 words!

But first, she watched a video that had just been uploaded.

Then she played a quick round of They Are Billions.

Feeling thirsty, she boiled some water for tea.

Hungry... Wait! How is it already noon?!

The entire morning had slipped away without her noticing. She glanced at her document and saw that she had only written two lines.

Stunned, a wave of panic hit her as if she had forgotten to do her homework. She quickly ordered some takeout and managed to bang out a thousand words in the forty minutes it took for the food to arrive.

Then she had lunch, watched more videos, played some more games...

Wen Yang returned at 4 p.m., having worked the early shift.

Stretching and looking a bit tired, he pushed open the door and saw Ning Chu sitting up in bed, typing furiously. “Still writing? How much have you done?”

“Almost there, almost there. Don’t peek,” Ning Chu said, her eyes glued to the screen as she asked absentmindedly, “How was work? Getting used to it?”

“Not bad. First day’s just getting familiar with things.” Wen Yang sat at the desk and explained, “The manager invited me to a welcome dinner tonight with the other new hires, so I’ll probably have to go.”

“Mm-hmm... Don’t drink. Remember what happened last time with Lin Li drugging you.”

“Think anyone will be that crazy?” He shuddered a bit at the memory. “I’ll just tell them I’m allergic to alcohol. Two sips and I’ll end up in the hospital.”

“...”

Ning Chu continued typing away, not even looking up, which made Wen Yang curious. “How much have you written today? You seem unusually focused.”

“Uh... One chapter is almost done.”
