Chapter 73: New Gadget
Thud! Thud! Thud!
“What the hell! Why’d you lock the door?”
“Are you doing something shady in there? Let me in too!”
Ning Chu was rudely awakened by the loud knocking on the door. She yawned, trying to stretch, but realized her right hand was still gently held in Wen Yang’s palm.
Pulling her hand free, she pushed herself up, yawning as she glanced down at Wen Yang, who was sleeping right beside her, their heads almost touching.
“So noisy~”
“Yeah,” Wen Yang muttered as he opened his eyes, his vision filled with Ning Chu’s delicate, drowsy face. Seeing her sleepy expression and the tears at the corner of her eyes, he couldn’t resist reaching up to lightly brush her cheek.
“What are you doing? Go answer the door!”
With a swift movement, Wen Yang grabbed the side of the bed’s frame and effortlessly leaped to the ground, landing lightly on his feet.
Ning Chu admired the graceful way he got off the bed, but then she glanced down at her own slender arms and legs. Yeah, if she tried that, she’d definitely end up flat on her face.
“You guys locked the door while you were sleeping?” Zhang Shaoqing barged in, his voice loud and obnoxious. “What shady business were you up to last night?”
Wang Jie trailed behind him, looking exhausted, yawning and rubbing his eyes. His hair was greasy, making it obvious he’d pulled an all-nighter.
“I’m gonna wash up and crash,” Wang Jie mumbled, dropping his things and heading toward the balcony, stretching.
“So tired~ How are you gonna satisfy your girlfriend like that?” Zhang Shaoqing teased, plopping down in front of the computer with his legs crossed, his gaze shifting toward Ning Chu, who was still peeking from under the covers.
She looked every bit like a girl.
Zhang Shaoqing, acting like a rascal, smirked and joked, “Ning Chu, why’s your face so red?”
Because I feel guilty...
She had spent the night sharing a bed with Wen Yang, even if it was just for a few minutes.
But Zhang Shaoqing’s accusation wasn’t entirely wrong—something almost happened last night.
Ning Chu flopped back onto the bed. “None of your business!”
“Weren’t you supposed to be staying at a hotel?” Wen Yang leaned against the edge of Ning Chu’s bed, raising an eyebrow at Zhang Shaoqing. “Looks like you pulled an all-nighter instead.”
“Yeah, we booked an esports hotel, and I thought I’d win one game and call it a night...”
“But then you stayed up all night?”
“Don’t even get me started! I kept getting paired with useless teammates! Weekend gaming is a nightmare, full of kids.”
Zhang Shaoqing ranted about his 0-16 teammates, an hour-long game that ended in defeat, and matches where half the team quit after ten minutes.
“So, did you fix things with your family?”
His complaints stopped abruptly. “No.”
“Anyway, I’m sick of my mom’s constant nagging. I don’t want to get married this early.” He scoffed, “I haven’t even experienced club models or escorts yet, and she’s already trying to shove me into a grave with a wedding. What’s her problem?”
Wen Yang had no advice for Zhang Shaoqing’s family troubles, so he simply said, “You should probably stop thinking about club models. You’ll ruin your health.”
Coming from a former harem-novel protagonist, it was quite the moral turn.
Ning Chu poked her head out from the covers, feeling proud of how much progress her “training” had made.
“Like I’ve actually been to those places,” Zhang Shaoqing muttered, yawning again as he lit a cigarette, shaking his leg. “So, did my mom come back after I left?”
“Nope.”
“That’s good. I was thinking of skipping class for a few days and hiding from her.”
Judging by his attitude, Ning Chu felt relieved. It didn’t seem like Zhang Shaoqing was on the path to becoming the villain just yet—he seemed in a decent mood, probably because he had enjoyed his time out.
Ning Chu, unsure how else to help, offered some friendly support. “It’s fine. You can lay low for a bit. I’ll cover for you in class.”
“We’ll see.”
Wang Jie, still half-asleep, came back inside, climbed into his bed, and mumbled, “I’m going to sleep. Keep it down.”
“I’ll smoke this and take a nap too,” Zhang Shaoqing stretched, cigarette dangling from his lips as he grabbed his lighter and headed out. Before he even made it to the door, Wang Jie’s loud snores echoed through the room.
Rubbing his ears in frustration, Zhang Shaoqing muttered, “That guy’s great at everything, but his snoring is impossible to deal with.”
Wen Yang, planning to catch some more sleep himself, gave up on the idea when he heard the snoring. Grabbing his toiletries, he followed Zhang Shaoqing out to the balcony.
The balcony was filled with smoke, which made Wen Yang wrinkle his nose. He moved to the sink to wash up and suggested, “Maybe you should smoke in the hallway from now on. Our clothes end up smelling like your cigarettes.”
“No big deal.”
Leaning against the railing, Zhang Shaoqing blew out a puff of smoke before pulling a glasses case from his pocket. After some hesitation, he asked, “Hey, aren’t you curious whether Ning Chu is really a guy or a girl?”
“Definitely a guy.”
“Don’t kid yourself! She looks nothing like a guy.”
Zhang Shaoqing scoffed, moving closer with a sly grin. “Wen Yang, I’ve got a way to find out for sure.”
“Hm?”
“A special tool!” Zhang Shaoqing excitedly handed Wen Yang the glasses case. “Put these on, and you’ll be able to see through Ning Chu’s clothes...”
Before he could finish, Wen Yang snatched the case from him.
“See? You are curious!” Zhang Shaoqing laughed, leaning against the sink as he took a drag from his cigarette. “Go ahead, see if Ning Chu’s a guy or a girl. You’re close enough with her that, even if she catches you, the worst you’ll get is a slap.”
“Where did you get these?”

“I bought them at a street stall yesterday while I was out. I tried them out...” Zhang Shaoqing’s grin became even more perverted. “And they actually work.”
“These would be perfect for checking out girls. Imagine that.”
Wen Yang gave him a look that screamed disgust, as if he were staring at a degenerate.
“I thought they’d be fake! How was I supposed to know they’d really work?”
Feeling attacked by Wen Yang’s judgmental gaze, Zhang Shaoqing grumbled, “Hurry up and use them! Check if Ning Chu’s a guy or a girl. Why are you wasting time? If you’re too scared, give them back!”
“Too scared to check yourself, so you’re making me do it?”
Zhang Shaoqing stubbed out his cigarette, shrugged on his jacket, and puffed out his chest. “I’m a gentleman.”
“Ning Chu!”
“What?!”
Zhang Shaoqing was startled. He hadn’t expected Wen Yang to turn traitor so quickly.
In a panic, he grabbed Wen Yang’s arm. “Wait! At least try them before telling Ning Chu!”
“Ning Chu! Shaoqing got some weird glasses!”
“Screw you! We’re not friends anymore!”
Ning Chu, who had been quietly playing on her phone in bed, immediately sat up, wide-eyed.
Not again!
Quickly, she pulled the blanket over herself, even though she knew it wouldn’t help. She scooted as far back into the bed as possible, hoping the gadget couldn’t see through her covers and bed frame to reveal everything.
In the novel, the villains had enjoyed quite the feast with those kinds of glasses.
“Bring them here! I’m confiscating them!”
“What?! Why?! I paid good money for those!” Zhang Shaoqing wailed, devastated.
“Who knows what you’re planning to use them for!”
Wen Yang backed her up. “He already used them to spy on girls. It’s pretty creepy.”
“I didn’t mean to!”
“And he was planning to use them to check on you...”
Ning Chu clicked her tongue in disgust. “Pervert!”
