Chapter 72: A Man's Word

Ning Chu’s soft, pale hand was enveloped tightly in Wen Yang’s warm palm, and she instantly felt a wave of calm wash over her. The eerie images from the horror movie that had been haunting her thoughts vanished completely.

She loved this feeling of security whenever she was with Wen Yang. It was like being wrapped in a thick, cozy blanket during the coldest winter, leaving her feeling comfortable and reluctant to part from him.

With her eyes open, she gazed at Wen Yang’s silhouette sitting on the edge of the bed, his back illuminated by the soft glow of her bedside lamp. She let out a contented hum, almost like a purring kitten. “You’re not planning to sit there all night, are you?”

“It’s still early, and I’m not tired,” Wen Yang said, his head lowered as he scrolled through his phone, reading a novel. “I’ll leave once you’re asleep.”

“Mm.”

His masculine scent seemed to grow more intense in the stillness of the room, causing Ning Chu to shift uneasily, moving closer to the wall as she created some distance between them.

She closed her eyes again, hoping to fall asleep, but after a few minutes, she couldn’t help but speak up. “Wen Yang.”

“Yeah?”

“I... my family is really conservative,” she stammered, her face flushing as she awkwardly brought up the topic of intimacy. “We have a rule... no touching before marriage. If you do, my mom will get mad...”

“Uh?” Wen Yang looked a little surprised. “But you’re a succubus.”

Right, I am a succubus! My mom is probably a succubus too!

Though there could be exceptions, saying a succubus family was conservative and abstinent was as absurd as claiming a young man had never indulged in certain... recreational activities.

Ning Chu froze, unsure how to explain this further.

She stubbornly stuck to her story. “So what if I’m a succubus? Lily’s one too, and she’s doing just fine!”

“Yeah, but she doesn’t even have a boyfriend. She’s all cold and distant.”

Wen Yang wasn’t entirely unaware of Lily’s true nature. He had seen enough of her and Ning Chu’s private chats to know that the speed of their conversations could leave any man blushing. Still, Lily did put on a good act in front of others.

Accepting the explanation with a nod, he replied, “Well, I guess that’s fine.”

Back when he was still single, Wen Yang had learned to suppress his urges. It had been over two months now since his one moment of release, and now that he had a girlfriend, he still had to endure.

What’s worse, with all the closeness between him and Ning Chu, his desires had only grown stronger.

Wen Yang could already envision his future of constant self-restraint—endlessly dreaming of indulgence but living the life of a monk.

It was tragic...

Faced with this harsh reality, he could only say with a straight face, “Don’t worry. I’m not some lustful guy.”

As soon as the words left his mouth, he sighed heavily.

Hearing his resigned sigh, Ning Chu almost burst into laughter.

Oh, the once-dominant male lead of a harem novel, now reduced to this pitiful state by her own doing!

The "Little Uncle" character had been transformed into a pure romance lead.

And a pure romance lead with no physical action at that.

“Go to sleep, go to sleep,” she said happily, closing her eyes again. She didn’t care if Wen Yang was suffering or not.

But soon, a new thought struck her.

Sure, it had turned into a pure romance story, but at what cost? She herself had become the price!

She had gone from a supporting female character to a nonexistent leading lady in the novel.

The smile vanished from her face.

If Wen Yang had to endure for too long and one day saw her in qing again, what if he couldn’t resist?

Ning Chu frowned, her mind swirling with potential problems.

Should she just make sure she never entered qing in front of him?

The bed frame suddenly creaked, and she glanced up to see Wen Yang stretching out his leg, resting it on the ladder of the bunk.

Her heart raced. “What are you doing?”

“Sitting like that is uncomfortable. It’s nothing, just sleep.”

“...”

Now that Wen Yang had fully planted himself on her bed, the small dorm bed felt even more cramped. In an attempt to avoid his masculine scent, Ning Chu scooted even closer to the wall.

It wasn’t a big deal. After all, she liked sleeping with her back against the wall anyway.

Just as she settled back in, she opened her eyes in shock—Wen Yang had laid down next to her.

“!!!”

In the darkness, Wen Yang felt her incredulous gaze on him. His face turned red as he explained, “Sitting was getting uncomfortable. Don’t worry, I’ll just stay until you fall asleep.”

“...”

Do I look like someone who believes this?

When it comes to such matters, not a single word out of a man’s mouth can be trusted!

Ning Chu quickly pulled her hand out of Wen Yang’s grasp and tried pushing his shoulder, but he didn’t budge.

“Really, I won’t do anything. You’re not feeling safe, right?” Wen Yang said, glancing toward the corner of the dorm room. “Look over there. Doesn’t it look like a ghost is staring at you?”

“Stop it!”

Thud!

Ning Chu jumped, sitting up in fright.

“It’s Black Bean. He knocked over the trash can,” Wen Yang said, looking down at the floor, where the small black figure blended into the darkness, almost invisible.

“Black Bean! Stop knocking over the trash!”

Black Bean, the little black cat, had once been a stray. Despite now being well-fed, it still hadn’t shaken its habit of rummaging through trash. Ning Chu had scolded him for this several times.

At least the cat had learned not to do it in front of her anymore...

“I’ll clean it up once you’re asleep.”

“He drives me crazy sometimes.”

Grumbling, Ning Chu lay back down on the bed. The space was so narrow that as soon as she shifted, her arm accidentally brushed against Wen Yang’s warm skin.

“Move over a bit.”

“If I move any further, I’ll fall off.”

“Then go back to your own bed! Stop crowding me!”

Wen Yang pretended not to hear, making Ning Chu huff in frustration. She tried pushing him a few more times, but it was no use. Finally, she turned her back to him, pulling the blanket tightly around herself in fear he might try something.

She should’ve just made Yan Xinya stay. Even if she, Lily, and the wolf-girl had to sleep on the floor, it would’ve been better than this.

She should’ve been firm and rejected him outright! How had she let Wen Yang get away with actually lying down?

If she had thrown a real tantrum, Wen Yang would’ve scurried back to his bed without a second thought.

Suddenly, she felt an arm drape over her waist. Even through the thin blanket, she could feel the warmth of his hand against her body.

Ning Chu’s entire body stiffened.

This is bad! He definitely has bad intentions!

She was about to sit up when his arm gently pulled her closer to him, pressing her back firmly against his chest.

Hsss...

The heat from his body radiated through her back, and the overpowering scent of masculinity made her dizzy. In an instant, her body softened, rendering her incapable of resistance.

“Don’t...”

“I won’t do anything. I’m just holding you while we sleep.”

Yeah, sure, and next you’ll say, “I’m just touching, not doing anything.”

Then it’ll be, “I’m just rubbing, I won’t go in.”

And after that, “Oops, I went in, but...”

As these thoughts raced through her mind, Ning Chu snapped out of it, her body jolting as her strength returned. She shot upright in bed.

Her voice was cold and firm as she pointed to Wen Yang’s bed. “Go sleep over there!”

“Alright, alright, I’m going.”

Wen Yang quickly scrambled back to his own bed.

He’d already gotten his fair share of closeness. Next time, Ning Chu’s resistance wouldn’t be as strong.
