Chapter 235: Chapter Two Hundred And Thirty Four
Camilla frowned even deeper. She did not like the confused, doubtful tone in his voice.
"Not just any cat," Camilla corrected him sharply, defending her beloved pet with fierce, passionate loyalty.
She dropped her arms to her sides. She began to describe her cat with deep, genuine love in her eyes.
"He is a magnificent, fat, bright orange tabby cat," Camilla described fondly, her voice turning incredibly soft and sweet. "He has beautiful white paws that look exactly like small little socks. He has a very soft, very warm belly."
She smiled a small, sad smile, remembering how much she missed him.
"He purrs incredibly loudly whenever I scratch him right behind his soft ears," Camilla continued, her eyes looking far away into the distance, completely lost in her happy memories. "He loves to sleep in the warm sunlight by the glass doors. He has always been by my side through everything. He is my only family."
The three men stood in the room, paralyzed by the detailed, passionate description of a fat orange cat.
Damon stared at his wife.
The realization hit Damon like a heavy iron hammer falling directly onto his head.
"A cat," Damon thought to himself. His internal voice was a mixture of mind-shattering shock and overwhelming humiliation.
He remembered her crying in her sleep. He remembered her begging, ’Don’t push me away, Winston. I miss you so much.’ She was not dreaming about a handsome, secret lover. She was not crying over a lost romance.
She was crying because she missed her pet cat.
Damon felt his face turn a bright, burning shade of hot red for the second time that day. He wanted the floorboards of the fabric store to open up instantly and swallow him whole.
He had spent an entire week burning with intense, murderous jealousy over a fat, orange feline with white socks for paws. He had almost killed his own cousin because his mind was poisoned by jealousy over a house pet. It was the most embarrassing, ridiculous moment of his entire life.
Standing near the open front doors, Kade was fighting a losing battle.
Kade quickly raised his hand and clamped it tightly over his own mouth. He bit down hard on his lower lip. His face turned bright red from the immense effort of holding his breath.
His broad shoulders began to shake violently up and down.
Kade thought to himself, his mind exploding with laughter.
"It turns out the general was jealous of a cat," Kade thought, his internal voice screaming with suppressed laughter.
He remembered the strict, terrifying orders Damon had given him weeks ago.
Investigate a man named Winston. Cripple his hands and feet. Throw him into the sea.
"He made me and my men run around in circles for a weeks!" Kade laughed internally, tears of amusement forming in his eyes. "We turned the entire kingdom upside down! We checked taverns, we checked noble houses, we bribed informants, all to find a man named Winston! The General wanted us to cripple a cat’s paws and throw it into the sea! This is absolutely hilarious!"
Kade had to turn his body around to face the busy street outside. He squeezed his eyes shut, trying desperately not to burst into loud, unprofessional laughter in front of his commander.
Allen was still recovering from his shock.
He listened to Camilla’s sweet, passionate description of the cat. But he noticed a very strange, specific phrase she had used at the very end.
Allen coughed softly to clear his throat.
"Sister-in-law," Allen spoke up gently, looking at Camilla with a slightly confused expression. "You said the cat is your only family."
Allen pointed his hand generally toward the upper city.
"But," Allen asked politely, "don’t you still have your younger brother, Lord Zade? Isn’t he your family too?"
Camilla froze.
The soft, nostalgic smile dropped off her face. Her eyes widened slightly in sudden panic.
She realized immediately that she had made a dangerous slip-up.
"Oh no," Camilla thought to herself, her mind racing at lightning speed. "Think fast, Camilla. Think fast. You cannot break character. You cannot let them suspect you are not the original Lady Camilla."
She quickly relaxed her face. She smoothed down the front of her brown dress. She put on a slightly sad, very serious expression.
Camilla thought of a very clever, believable answer.
"Well," Camilla explained smoothly, her voice calm and slightly hesitant, as if she were revealing a painful family secret. "My brother and I didn’t get along very well before. We had many terrible disagreements in the past. We were very distant for a long time."
She looked down at the floor, acting perfectly heartbroken.
"So," Camilla continued softly, "during those cold, lonely times in the Benson mansion, Winston was there for me. He was my only comfort when no human would speak to me. That is why I consider him my true family."
Allen nodded his head slowly. He believed her sad story. He felt deep sympathy for her lonely past.
Damon also listened to her explanation. The burning embarrassment in his chest slowly faded, replaced by a strange mix of relief and deep guilt.
Damon took a slow step forward. He looked down at her sad face. He wanted to make things right. He wanted to fix his mistake. He wanted to give her whatever she wanted.
"Where is Winston?" Damon asked softly. His deep voice was gentle and accommodating.
He was fully prepared to send a whole army of soldiers to find the orange cat and bring it safely to the Benson mansion, no matter what it cost.
Camilla kept her eyes on the floor. She let out a very small genuine sigh of sadness.
"He is in another world now," Camilla spoke softly.
It was the absolute truth. Winston the cat was in her modern world, completely unaware that his owner was trapped inside a historical romance novel.
But to the three men listening in the fabric store, the phrase "another world" had only one, tragic meaning.
Standing by the door, Kade finally managed to stop laughing. He heard her sad, quiet voice. He immediately assumed that the poor orange cat had died.
Kade felt a rush of pity for the young Lady. He wanted to offer her comfort.
Kade turned and bowed his head respectfully to Camilla.
"Don’t be sad, My Lady," Kade spoke gently, trying to be encouraging. "It is hard to lose a beloved pet. But you are no longer alone."
Kade gestured his hand warmly toward the tall, silent General standing in the center of the room.
"The general will be by your side from now on," Kade promised her with a kind smile. "He will protect you and keep you company."
Camilla slowly lifted her head.
She did not look at Kade. She turned her face and looked directly at Damon.
Damon stood there, looking guilty, heavily embarrassed, and defeated. The red mark from her hard slap was still glowing brightly on his left cheek. He looked like a large dog that had just realized it chewed up its owner’s favorite pair of shoes. He knew he had behaved terribly. He knew he had jumped to insane conclusions and almost ruined an innocent man’s life.
Camilla did not smile at him. She did not accept Kade’s comforting words.
Camilla glared into Damon’s eyes.
Her eyes were cold, offended, and deeply, visibly upset. She was furious that he had doubted her, furious that he had attacked her business partner, and furious that he had caused such a massive, chaotic scene in public.
Damon looked at her fierce, angry glare.
He swallowed hard. He lowered his eyes to the floorboards. The General did not say a single word in his own defense. It was painfully obvious that she was incredibly upset with him, and Damon knew, without a single shadow of a doubt, that he had fucked up massively.
