Chapter 229: Chapter Two Hundred And Twenty Eight
Camilla shook her head gently. She did not want to waste time eating alone in the massive room. She was eager to see her silk fabrics.
"I will eat there," Camilla replied, waving her hand casually. She meant she would eat at Allen’s textile shop in the lower city. "I am already late for my appointment."
She reached into the pocket of her dress and pulled out a pair of simple, dark brown leather gloves. She began pulling them tightly over her fingers, preparing to go outside into the morning air.
"Goodbye, Uncle Murry," Camilla said, turning toward the front doors.
Murry raised his hand and waved politely.
"Goodbye, My Lady," Murry replied. "Have a safe and pleasant day."
Camilla walked out of the mansion. Her carriage was already waiting in the paved courtyard. The driver opened the door for her.
She climbed inside, sat down on the soft velvet seat, and the carriage rolled out of the iron gates, heading toward the busy streets of the capital city.
Miles away from the mansion, the Benson military camp was already loud, dusty, and incredibly busy.
The hot morning sun beat down mercilessly on the dry dirt of the training fields. Hundreds of soldiers were marching in straight lines, their heavy boots kicking up thick clouds of dust.
The sharp, loud sounds of steel swords clashing against wooden shields filled the air.
Right in the very center of the camp stood the largest white canvas tent. It was the General’s private command tent.
Inside the tent, the air was cool, but the atmosphere was incredibly tense.
Damon sat behind his desk. His dark brown eyes looked completely exhausted. The skin under his eyes was slightly dark. He had not slept a single minute last night.
He had spent the entire night sitting in his study at the mansion, staring blindly at the wall, completely tormented by what he had seen. He had watched Camilla fall onto her bed, hugging a white letter tightly to her chest, smiling the most beautiful, genuine, loving smile he had ever seen.
The pure, agonizing jealousy was eating him alive from the inside out. His heart felt like a heavy, bleeding rock.
The canvas flap of the tent was pushed open.
Kade stepped inside. Kade was holding a handful of official reports. He walked to the center of the tent. He stopped a few feet away from the desk and saluted sharply.
"My Lord, welcome back," Kade greeted him respectfully.
Damon did not look up immediately. He stared at a blank piece of paper on his desk. He took a slow, deep breath, forcing his painful personal feelings deep down into his stomach.
He had to focus on his military duties. He could not let his soldiers see his weakness.
Damon slowly raised his head. His eyes were cold and commanding.
"Report," Damon ordered simply. His deep voice was flat and rough.
Kade stood up straight. He searched through the stack and pulled out a single piece of parchment. His face looked very serious.
"I have intel, General," Kade spoke clearly, keeping his voice professional. "There is something going on between Lord Ryde and General Howe."
Hearing the two names, Damon’s eyes narrowed instantly. The jealousy faded slightly, replaced by sharp, cold suspicion.
Damon leaned forward slightly. He rested his large hands flat on the desk.
"Explain," Damon commanded softly.
Kade looked down at his notes.
"My people said General Howe hasn’t been seen in the kingdom of Daril for a while," Kade explained carefully. "He disappeared from his southern camp for weeks. That was why our spies couldn’t get anything to report on his troop movements. He was completely off the map."
Kade looked up, meeting Damon’s intense gaze.
"But yesterday, immediately after he finally got back to the kingdom," Kade continued, his voice dropping slightly to emphasize the importance of the news. "He didn’t go back to his military base. He went straight to the upper city. He went secretly to see Lord Ryde at his private mansion."
Damon sat still. He absorbed the information. His mind began connecting the pieces of the puzzle rapidly.
Damon thought to himself, his internal voice cold and calculating.
"Why?" Damon wondered silently. "What is their relationship? Howe is a brutal, greedy border general who only cares about things that benefits him. Lord Ryde is a soft, wealthy noble who sits in the capital city counting his money. They have absolutely nothing in common."
He thought deeper. He remembered how Isabel had constantly pushed Damon to divorce Camilla claiming it was for his safety. He remembered how Howe had taken his land when he was injured.
"Unless..." Damon’s thoughts darkened dangerously. "Unless they are working together. Unless Ryde is supplying Howe with money and political cover in the capital, and Howe is supplying Ryde with military force. If they form an alliance, they could try to overthrow my command entirely."
Damon looked back at Kade.
"Do you know the reason for his visit?" Damon asked. His voice was steady, showing no fear of the potential conspiracy.
Kade shook his head slowly.
"No, My Lord," Kade replied honestly. "The meeting took place inside Lord Ryde’s private, locked study. Our spies could not get close enough to hear their conversation."
Damon tapped his index finger once against the hard wood of the desk.
"It’s fine," Damon spoke. His tone was absolute. "Find out what their relationship is about. Put more spies near Ryde’s estate. I want to know exactly what they are planning before they make their next move."
"Yes, General," Kade nodded sharply, accepting the order.
Damon paused for a second. He shifted his thoughts to his second, equally important investigation.
"What about the task about my father and the valley?" Damon asked, his eyes narrowing.
He was still trying to find out the exact truth about how his father died many years ago, and how it connected to the Eastern Valley that Howe had recently tried to steal. He knew there was a dark, hidden secret buried in the past.
