Chapter 228: Chapter Two Hundred And Twenty Seven
The bright morning sun shone clearly through the large glass windows of the master bedroom. The warm, golden light slowly crept across the smooth floorboards and rested on the large bed.
Camilla slowly opened her eyes. She let out a long, quiet yawn. She stretched her arms high above her head and pushed her legs down to the end of the soft mattress. She had slept incredibly well.
She rolled over onto her side. She looked at the other half of the large bed. It was empty. The white silk sheets were perfectly smooth and untouched.
Camilla sat up slowly. She pushed her curly hair out of her face. She looked around the quiet, sunlit bedroom. She looked at the chair near the small table. It was empty.
"He is not here," Camilla whispered softly to the empty room.
She remembered the events of the previous night. She remembered him saying he was going to his private study downstairs to get his ledger because he had a lot of work to do.
After he left, she had read her letter from Allen, jumped on the bed in pure happiness, and eventually fallen fast asleep.
Camilla shrugged her shoulders casually.
"Maybe he had a lot to do last night," Camilla thought to herself. Her internal voice was unbothered. "He is a General. He probably stayed up all night planning his army formations or counting his weapons."
She pushed the thick wool blankets off her body. Her bare feet touched the floor. She did not feel sad that he was gone, she didn’t have the time. She will be very busy today. She had a very important business meeting to attend.
Camilla called for a maid to draw her a bath.
She walked over to the wardrobe. She opened the doors and looked at her dresses. She needed something practical for the day. She was going to the lower city to meet Allen and inspect her very first shipment of southern silk fabrics. She did not want to wear those heavy, restrictive gown.
She selected a simple but elegant day dress. The fabric was durable and comfortable.
The maid came in, drew her a bath and left.
Camilla went into the attached washroom and had her bath. After having her bath, she dried herself, pulled the dress over her head and smoothed out the skirts. She sat in front of her vanity mirror and brushed her red curls, tying them back into a neat, secure half-up style with a simple dark ribbon.
She looked at her reflection. She looked like a smart, capable businesswoman.
She turned around and walked out of the bedroom. She walked smoothly down the long, carpeted hallway of the second floor.
As she began to walk down the grand front staircase, she heard the quiet, busy sounds of the mansion waking up. Maids were sweeping the floors, and the smell of fresh bread was drifting up from the kitchen.
Mr. Murry was standing at the very bottom of the grand staircase. He was holding a small silver tray, giving quiet instructions to a passing footman.
When Murry saw Camilla walking down the stairs, he immediately stopped talking. He turned his body toward her and bowed very respectfully. A wide, bright cheerful smile spread across his wrinkled face.
"Good morning, My Lady," Murry greeted her warmly. His voice echoed pleasantly in the large, bright foyer.
Camilla smiled back. It was a genuine, friendly smile. She really liked the old housekeeper.
"Good morning, Uncle Murry," Camilla replied as she took another step down. "Hope you slept well?"
Murry placed his hands neatly behind his back. He stood up very straight. His chest puffed out slightly with pride and deep respect.
"Of course I did, My Lady," Murry replied smoothly, his eyes twinkling with happiness. "Living under your guidance and authority, I am guaranteed to have a good night’s sleep."
Camilla stopped on the second to last step. She let out a soft, bright chuckle. She covered her mouth with her hand, highly amused by his formal, flattering words.
"Oh, Uncle Murry," Camilla laughed gently. "You flatter me."
She stepped down onto the floor of the grand foyer. She looked around the large entrance hall. The guards were at the doors, but Damon was nowhere to be seen.
"Do you know where the General is?" Camilla asked out loud. Her voice was casual, just making polite conversation.
Murry’s bright smile faded just a tiny bit. He nodded his gray head.
"He left early this morning, My Lady," Murry replied softly. "He left before the sun even came up. He said he had something urgent to do at the military camp."
Camilla listened to the answer. She kept her face polite.
But inside her head, her mind immediately went into a state of mild panic.
"He left early?" Camilla thought to herself, her internal voice filled with sudden suspicion. "Without saying goodbye? What about my gold mine?"
She remembered the promise he had made to her in the bedroom last night. He had promised to give her the deed to a real, working gold mine. He said he would have Kade write up the legal contract.
"I hope he doesn’t go back on his word," Camilla worried in her mind. Her eyes narrowed slightly. "He promised me a gold mine. I earned that reward for taking care of his injury. If he tries to forget about it just because he is busy at the camp, I will march right over there and demand my property papers."
She pushed her greedy worries aside for the moment. She had her own business to run today.
Camilla nodded her head slowly.
"That’s alright," Camilla said smoothly. She adjusted the sleeves of her dress. "I must be on my way too."
Murry looked slightly surprised. He gestured his hand toward the open doors of the dining room. He could smell the warm breakfast waiting on the table.
"Won’t you stay for breakfast, My Lady?" Murry asked politely, hoping she would eat before leaving. "The cooks prepared fresh eggs and warm porridge."
