Chapter 51: The bridge [11]
The tall skeleton looked in my direction, and I stared into his empty dark eye sockets.
My hand was already resting on my katana, ready to draw it if the undead skeleton did any sort of movement.
Unlike my expectations, the undead monster chattered its teeth, turned around and continued walking forward.
That was close. For a moment, I thought I was found out.
Once again, I praise my darkness powers.
’Oof, I thought that guy would swing at you, how boring’ Ezio said, disappointed.
’You just want me to get beaten, don’t you?’ I said.
’Don’t put words in my mouth, I didn’t say anything like that.’
Since I didn’t want to fight the giant skeleton which would’ve attracted a lot of attention, I waited for it to disappear out of view, and only then did I continue forward.
When I went deep, I found undead skeleton archers for the first time, just what I had been looking for.
The tunnel opened into a wider cave of at least 100 meters wide in length and 10 meters tall in height with the same crystal walls. However in this cave, there were dozens of rocky crystal pillars that rose from the ground to the ceiling.
Using both my eyes and senses, I was able to identify that there were 10 skeletons — six archers, two swordsmen with shields and two mace users.
The archers just walked around with their bows in hand, their bones making sounds.
Those same sounds reminded me of skeleton monsters from a game I used to play when I was younger, and they were quite annoying to deal with.
They looked like they were patrolling, but I doubted that they had ever been attacked inside their caves.
I sneaked in and hid behind a pillar to the left. After checking that no one was looking in my direction, I moved to another pillar.
From my left, an undead archer skeleton stepped into the darkness sense circle and was walking towards me. So I sheathed my katana quietly and waited.
The archer kept walking in my direction, passing between the pillars and looking left to right. Once he was almost near the pillar I was hiding behind, chains made of darkness came out from the ground and wrapped around the archer’s arms, stopping him from using his bow, and around his legs.
Before he could scream, my hand, already covered in gloves with sharp nails, launched and grabbed the undead archer skeleton’s mouth to shut him up.
Once I was done doing that, I pushed him against the wall quietly and then I thrust my gloved hand through his ribs, gripped the core and crushed it to dust. Turning the skeleton to dust.
From dust he became, to dust he returned.
[You have slain a Greater Low Monster, Undead Skeleton]
I let the chain crumble and I moved between the pillars like a silent assassin, barely making any step sounds.
The other monsters hadn’t noticed anything, so that was good.
I peeked from the right side of the pillar and noticed that two skeletons were walking together, deeper on the left, so they would be my next targets.
Pressing my hand against the pillar, I infused dark energy into it until a dark circular spot was left on it. I did the same to the next five others.
I waited.
The two I was targeting were going around clockwise while the remaining 3 were going counter-clockwise. So those two were coming in my direction.
When they got closer, I hid behind the opposite side of the pillar, avoiding being discovered.
The sound of bone rattling and clattering got closer and closer, signaling the monsters’ approach.
When the two undead skeletons reached the pillar, I triggered the spot where I had infused darkness energy and in reaction, tentacles made of darkness launched from that spot and wrapped around the skeleton’s body that was on the left and pulled the skeleton against the wall.
The skeleton on the left was caught off guard by the sudden attack and was about to try and help his duo but that made him distracted, and was enough of an opening for me.
I sneaked behind him with a shaped dagger made of darkness, grabbed his mouth and stabbed his core through the back.
[You have slain a Low Greater Monster, Undead Skeleton]
The undead skeleton attached to the wall watched helplessly as his duo was killed in front of him and turned to ash, and couldn’t do anything as the black tentacles held him in place.
Was it actually alright to say that I killed them?
I mean they were already dead, and only got resurrected because of a fragmented story.
Killing the dead. It sounded funny to me.
Oh fuck. The ash fell on me.
I wanted to curse and clean myself but I couldn’t at the moment, so I kept the curses to myself.
Looking at the skeleton that was attached to the wall trying to fight off the restraints but miserably failing, I smiled.
"You guys were so annoying during the earlier fight, I couldn’t help but have to be paying attention to my back so I don’t get pierced by an arrow." I whispered so no one but the skeleton in front of me would hear me.
This was me trying again to talk to a monster.
I mean they were humans before death, so didn’t that mean that they could understand me?
It wasn’t ridiculous to say but the truth was that once a human dies, their souls would leave their dead bodies as well, with the exception of some.
So that’s why they wouldn’t understand me, they were just empty husks left behind.
Do their souls go to heaven?
No.
There’s no such thing as heaven in this world, at least for the ones that are corrupted.
I took a step closer to the undead skeleton and then thrust my dagger through its ribs, pushed until its sharp top pierced the undead skeleton’s core and cracked it.
[You have slain a Low Greater Monster, Undead Skeleton]
The undead skeleton turned to dust starting from the head and below, slipping from the restraints.
I had infused darkness energy into the pillars so that I’d be able to use them from a further distance. That was why I marked different pillars.
So if perhaps a monster passed by it, they would be restrained against the pillar. Just the same way I can summon tentacles from the darkness circle.
I’m quite smart, ain’t I?
