Chapter 295: Her mother’s criminal past.
Sienna regretted every decision that had led her there, but she directed the ship back to the compound. The return journey was very silent, with the exception of Owena’s snores. Sienna finally got through to her mother, but she could hardly talk. She sent her mother a text with a single name: Owena.
Her mother had not replied, but when they walked through the main gates, her mother was waiting. As soon as she saw Owena, her face drained of color. She glared at Sienna, as if her daughter had just unleashed a plague.
Ali, who had come to wait for her mother hid behind Jess, peeking out with wide, terrified eyes.
Owena spread her arms theatrically. "Long time, little sis. Aren’t you going to hug me? Or do you plan to keep pretending I don’t exist?"
Mrs. Miller’s lips thinned. "You should not have come here. You should have stayed in prison."
Sienna rubbed her temples. That response confirmed that there was a relationship between Owena and her mother. Now, they just needed to clear out these criminal allegations. If Owena needed to be paid off or framed and returned to prison, she could decide after knowing the full story.
Mija, ever the chaos enthusiast, whispered, "This is better than any soap opera. I want popcorn."
Mrs. Miller hissed at Owena. "What do you want?"
Owena grinned, showing teeth that had seen too many fights. "My money. And acknowledgement. I want to see my niece and nephew. You can’t erase me Orlena."
Sienna blinked a few times. "Orlena! My mother is called Orlena!"
Mija chuckled. "She changed her first name! Your mother truly has secrets. I think I like her more now."
Mrs. Miller growled. "You have not been here for a minute and already, you are saying things you should not be saying. You ruin everything you touch. You ruin my life whenever you come around."
Ali, had managed to tiptoe to Sienna’s side. She tugged at her sleeve. "Mama, why does grandma look like she is about to bite that hairless woman?"
Sienna shook her head. "Mama doesn’t know." But she was going to get some answers from one of them.
Owena suddenly laughed. "Relax Orlena, I am not here to stay. I am just here to collect what’s mine. If you don’t give it to me, I will be stirring a lot of old pots." She shook her arms. "So, sis, are you going to hug me or keep pretending I am a ghost."
Mrs. Miller’s eyes narrowed. "You are not a ghost, you are a nightmare, no, you are worse than that. You are poison."
"Sienna, has your mother ever taught you computing?" Owena asked abruptly.
Mrs. Miller let out a deep scream that startled everyone.
Tension filled the air. It seemed like the moment was gearing up to a fight.
Jess suddenly clapped her hands and glared at the guards and servants who were suddenly very interested in where they were standing. "I have no idea what is happening here, but I know that it should be taken in doors or somewhere private."
Under her watchful, authoritative, eye, everyone moved away. Their small group entered the house. Cousins, aunts, uncles, and other family members were ordered away. Only Sienna, Soren, Mrs. Miller, Jess and Owena remained in the living room. But of course, Mija slithered inside through an open upstairs window and hid on the stairs.
Jess sat in the center chair, like an elder presiding over a tribunal, her sharp eyes daring anyone to breathe too loudly.
"Now," she said, voice like gravel rubbed with steel, "we are going to end this as quickly as we can without creating anymore unnecessary drama. Now, this lady claims she is owed money. Let her explain."
Owena leaned back in the chair, tattoo gleaming, bald head catching the bright light. "My sister Orlena has not told any of you about her background has she? I am sure she said she was an orphan and that was the end."
Soren slipped his hand into Sienna’s.
Owena continued, "My precious little sister pretends she is innocent. But when we were teenagers, she was the one with the big ideas. She was born smart, daddy’s little genius when he was alive. He taught her how to hack into cars and repair them and build them. He was training her to enter the racing world. But then, daddy and mommy died when we she was twelve and me fourteen. Everything he had was stolen by relatives and his business partners. We became orphans, broke, desperate. And Orlena decided that we should put her genius to work by stealing cars."
Sienna gasped while Soren looked at his mother as if she was a stranger.
Orlena smirked. "Not just any cars. She wanted those high speed cars only, the kind that cost millions. Worth more than the entire orphanage were we were dumped."
Mrs. Miller stiffened. "I never stole anything. I don’t owe anyone money."
Owena wagged her finger. "You got us inside the car factory. You hacked into that car and I drove it. And when it all went wrong, I took the fall for both of us. I did your share of prison time sis. Years of them. You owe me."
Soren whimpered. A rebel father and a criminal mother! Could it get any worse? His eyes moved to his aunt and her tattooed face. Yes, it could get worse.
Jess shook her head. "Wait a minute, the car was stolen when you were kids but you have just been released from prison today. The timing doesn’t make sense. You should have been locked up for no more than three to four years at most."
Mrs. Miller smirked. "Aha! She was released when she turned eighteen, and I did everything I could to help her. But she chose to return to a life of crime. Don’t believe Owena, she’s twisting the truth. I admit that I behaved like a coward when I was a child. I was reckless. But the idea to steal the car was not mine, I never agreed to her schemes."
Owena leaned forward, eyes glittering. "You loved the thrill. You proposed the car theft first. You said, ’Let’s do what dad would do. Let’s take what they won’t give us.’ And when the enforcers caught up to me, you signed out of the car’s system and locked me in there."
Sienna gasped. "Mother, you...is that true?" She raised her hand, "Let’s do what dad would do....was your father a car thief too?"
Jess nearly groaned. In her mind, how her noble family Veythar family had found themselves here.
Mrs. Miller’s lips trembled. "I was twelve. We were starving and my older sister dragged me into it."
Owena slapped the chair. "Dragged you? You were practically the driver. You controlled the car with your computer and I just sat inside to make sure it was delivered to that junkyard and we got the money. You were the one who said, ’if we hack the locks, we can hack our future.’" She looked around. "Well, your future looks bright from where I am sitting. Where is mine?"
