Chapter 259: They refused to spill!

The office was very quiet, awaiting Tariq’s confession with so much excitement as if it was the key to a hidden fortune. Everyone leaned forward, their eyes fixed on the man’s face or lips. Some were still thinking about his looks, but most were focused on the reasons for his choice. It was so quiet that they could all hear each other breathe.

Sienna huffed, "I have been holding my breath in for almost two minutes Tariq, you have to give me something. Why did you choose to marry a woman you clearly didn’t find attractive? And why did you want her to become uglier? Is it revenge? Is it...a fetish?"

Mija shouted, almost hysterically, "Tell us, tell us dammit."

Elder Mini cleared her throat, while Linera pulled Mija backwards, afraid she would leap on Tariq and grip his neck.

Tariq’s jaw tightened. He looked away, refusing to meet Sienna’s eyes. "That is personal," he said flatly.

Sienna raised a brow. "Personal? You came to me for judgement, and you think you can hide behind that word? What kind of answer is that?"

"The only one you are going to get out of me." He replied.

Her follow-up questions came one after another, relentless as arrows: "What if I insist on knowing? What if I torture the answers out of you? Was it for wealth? For pity? Did you just want to humiliate her? Was it a bet? Did you want to prove something to someone?" Each time, Tariq’s lips pressed tighter, his silence louder than any denial.

Sammy finally lifted her head, her voice steady. "Lady Sienna, what we have revealed is enough. We are ready to sign the divorce papers. We already agreed on alimony and other terms. We have no children or business together. There is nothing complicated about this. There is nothing more to discuss."

Mija hissed softly, unwilling to accept that response. The court clerk typed furiously, recording every word. The guards exchanged glances, disappointed that the drama had ended so quickly. Even Sienna herself felt cheated--no grand confrontation, no fiery argument, just a quiet, efficient severing of ties.

She signed the papers and stamped them. Tariq and Sammy sat with the lawyers for only five minutes and signed with form hands. The papers were sealed and taken to the next relevant department.

Sienna smiled reluctantly at the couple. "The cooling off period is optional. If one of you thinks it is necessary, now is the time to speak up. This is your last chance, unless you re-marry in future."

Sammy rose, "No need."

Tariq did the same, repeating her words.

The couple bowed stiffly, and left the office without another word. The door closed behind them, leaving a hollow silence in their wake.

The guards and court clerk retreated, but they would return of Sienna called upon them.

Sienna leaned back in her chair, tapping her fingers against the desk. "That was too clean." she muttered, "Too neat. Not at all how I saw this going. Something doesn’t add up."

Linera nodded, "Of course it doesn’t add up. A handsome man marrying a woman he clearly didn’t desire? And then wanting her to become uglier? There is a story buried there. Either he hated her, or he has issues."

Mija kicked a chair, cursing loudly. "I should have had them arrested along with that crazy teacher of yours, Sienna. How dare they excite me just to let me down!"

A worker from the kitchen department entered the office, to distribute fresh hot drinks, water and snacks. Secretary Mika, who took his job very seriously, used a small device Timothy had given him to scan Sienna’s drink and food for poison.

Only when it was determined to be safe did he allow her to touch it.

Elder Mini cleared her throat, and they all turned to her. She chuckled, enjoying the attention. "Actually, I think I know some of what drove Tariq to marry an ugly wife."

Sienna grimaced.

Mini rolled her eyes. "Child, I am way too old to call a spade a spoon. That woman is ugly, and she was not always that ugly. She had a few surgical procedures over the years to deform herself at her husband’s request. And it is not what you think. Tariq did not marry her for pity, or wealth or revenge. No, no...the truth is far more scandalous."

Sienna narrowed her eyes. "Oh goodie, finally!"

Mija practically latched onto the elder’s side, her eyes shining. "Hurry, hurry."

Elder Mini wagged a finger. "Patience, little ones. You must savor gossip like fine wine. It has to sleep on the tongue and be absorbed, especially this kind of gossip. Let me start with one simple question. Do you all know who Tariq’s mother is?"

Naturally, as someone who had no interest in Tariq as an actor or man, Sienna had no idea. Mija knew the man, but nothing about his family. Even Linera was lost, which was to be expected, because she barely knew fox beast men, outside the Veythar’s and those she had met around Sienna. So, nobody did.

Despite Tariq’s fame as an actor, his private life was sealed tighter than a vault. No one had seen his mother on BeastNet or anywhere else, in the company of her son.

Mini chuckled, clearly savoring the moment. "Her name was Illora, a fox beast woman unlike any other. I happen to have a picture." She tapped her phone, scrolling for a few seconds and projected the photo for them all to see.

Sienna’s eyes widened. The woman in the picture was a red head, and possibly, the most stunning beast woman she had ever seen. Her three red tails shimmered as if they were bathed in liquid stars! Her eyes glowed with intelligence and she radiated a regal grace that made even even Mija gasp. It was obvious where Tariq had got his good looks from.

Sienna’s mouth moved before she could stop herself, "Where was this woman when my father-in-law was looking for a wife? Where were his eyes? How could he marry Cadelaria when such a woman existed? She must have had nobles, royals and every wealthy man chasing her."

Mini chuckled, "Ah, child...you should be glad it didn’t happen."

Sienna froze, her curiosity aroused.. Glad? Why? What danger lay in Illora’s beauty? The elder’s smile was sly, her words heavy with implication.
