Chapter 68: The Sky Mother’s Gift (1)
After watching the five people pour their Aether Energy into the barren land for two hours without stopping, Maeve couldn’t help but ask, "Don’t they ever get tired?" Their faces had already grown pale, and the sight made her worry.
"Are you sure they won’t suddenly collapse?" she asked Ikarus.
Ikarus let out a heavy sigh. "It’s dangerous, but they have to do this if we want this land to become fertile again."
The land had lost so much of its life that restoring it would take time, effort, and a great deal of Aether Energy.
"Don’t worry," Ikarus said. "They know their limits. They won’t use up all of their energy." After a brief pause, he added softly, "I won’t let anyone die because of that ever again."
The sadness in his voice was impossible to miss. Maeve guessed it had brought back memories of his parents.
She didn’t know enough about his past to say the right words, so instead, she quietly reached for his hand, hoping her touch alone could remind him that he wasn’t alone anymore.
Ikarus looked at her for a moment before gently squeezing her hand back, silently accepting the comfort she offered.
The two of them stayed where they were, quietly watching everyone continue their work.
Time slowly passed, and nearly another hour went by before the first person finally stepped back. "Leader, I think we have done it!"
The others stepped back and smiled as they watched the ground change before their eyes. The dry, cracked soil had become much softer. It still wasn’t as rich as naturally fertile land, but it was more than enough to grow a field of grass.
[Ding! Ding!]
[Hidden Quest Completed: Successfully create a field of grass!]
[Reward: 1,500 Coins]
[Remaining Coins: 3,950]
[Ding! Ding!]
[Hidden Quest Completed: Build a livestock pen in the Azuryn Settlement!]
[Reward: 2,000 Coins]
[Remaining Coins: 5,950]
Maeve blinked several times because she hadn’t expected to complete two hidden quests at the same time. Just a little while ago, she had been so broke that she had to borrow money. Now, she had earned thousands of coins in an instant.
[Host, do you want to check the Black Market and see if there’s any fresh grass for sale?]
Maeve frowned. ’But won’t there be side effects?’
[Yes, there will definitely be side effects, but there’s no harm in just looking, right?!] Pinky replied, its eyes sparkling with excitement.
Maeve thought about it for a moment while Ikarus and the plant experts carefully examined the newly restored soil.
After a short pause, she finally nodded. "Alright," she said. "Let’s check it out."
As soon as Maeve gave her answer, a familiar screen appeared in front of her.
[Welcome to the Black Market!]
[Searching for fresh grass...]
[Search complete!]
Rows of items quickly filled the screen. Maeve’s eyes lit up. "There really is grass."
Pinky puffed out its tiny chest proudly. [Of course! The Black Market sells almost everything.]
Maeve carefully looked through the list.
[Fresh Meadow Grass Seeds (100 seeds): 300 Coins]
[Wild Prairie Grass (50 kg): 800 Coins]
[Fast-Growing Green Grass Seeds (200 seeds): 1,000 Coins]
[Premium Spirit Grass (10 kg): 15,000 Coins]
Maeve paused. "’Spirit Grass’?"
[It’s rich in energy and helps magical creatures grow stronger.]
Maeve immediately looked away from the expensive item.
"Definitely not that one."
Still, she made a mental note of the Spirit Grass. If she ever became rich enough, she would definitely come back and buy it.
"Which one has the lowest side effects?" she asked.
Pinky’s eyes quickly scanned the list.
[Fresh Meadow Grass Seeds]
[Side effect: Because the seeds come from another world, they may slowly replace nearby native grass if left unchecked. Over time, the local plants could become less common. However, this effect can be prevented by regularly pulling out the grass before it spreads beyond its designated area.]
Maeve blinked. "So... they’re an invasive species?"
[Not exactly.] Pinky shook its head. [They won’t destroy the local plants overnight. They simply grow faster and compete for space more easily. As long as you keep pulling them out before they reach the fence, the balance can be maintained.]
Maeve stared at the item description for a few more seconds. "That doesn’t sound too bad."
Pinky nodded enthusiastically. [Exactly! Compared to most Black Market items, this side effect is very easy to deal with.]
She could easily afford three packs of seeds. Still, she didn’t rush to buy them. Instead, she looked toward Ikarus, who had just finished talking with the plant experts.
"Ikarus!" she called, waving her hand at her husband.
He turned around and walked over to her. "Yes?"
"Can the grass here grow quickly?" Maeve asked.
Ikarus shook his head with a heavy sigh. "Unfortunately, no. It will take about a month for the grass to grow tall enough for the Clouds to eat. The soil is still in poor condition."
Maeve frowned slightly. A whole month? That was much longer than she had hoped.
She immediately asked Pinky in her mind, ’How long will the Fresh Meadow Grass Seeds take to grow?’
Pinky answered almost at once. [Under normal conditions, they take about seven days to fully grow.]
Maeve’s eyes lit up. ’Only seven days?’
[Yes.] Pinky nodded proudly. [They’re much faster than the native grass in this world. That’s one of the reasons they can easily spread if people don’t keep them under control.]
Maeve fell silent for a moment. Seven days was still a long time for the Clouds to go without enough food, but it was much better than waiting an entire month.
"I actually have a solution for that. Would you let me help you?" Maeve asked. Then she quickly added, "I mean... the Sky Mother gave me a solution a little while ago."
Ikarus’s eyes immediately lit up and without a second thought, he took both of her hands and held them tightly.
"Maeve, that would be wonderful!" His smile was filled with relief, as if a heavy weight had finally been lifted from his shoulders.
Maeve smiled back before speaking to Pinky in her mind. ’I’ll buy three packs.’
[Ding! Ding!]
[Purchased 3x Fresh Meadow Grass Seeds (Total: 300 Seeds): 900 Coins]
[Remaining Coins: 5,050]
A moment later, three small cloth bags suddenly appeared inside Maeve’s inventory. She quickly took them out while making sure no one was paying too much attention.
"These are..." Ikarus whispered in surprise as he looked at the bags in her hands.
