Chapter 60: The Chopping Expert (2)

’Come on, that’s completely normal!’ Maeve’s face instantly turned red. ’It’s probably just the pregnancy hormones.’

She had heard that once the morning sickness started to fade, some pregnant women became more interested in their husbands and more aware of physical attraction, so this was probably the same thing.

In Maeve’s case, Cerus wasn’t even the father of her baby. But he and Ikarus shared the same blood, which meant they looked similar in many ways.

’Stop putting weird ideas into my head,’ Maeve complained to Pinky. ’You’re ruining the moment.’

Before Pinky could respond, a familiar voice called out from afar. "Maeve! I’m done!"

Cerus waved excitedly at her the moment he finished cutting the last piece of wood.

His face was full of pride as he held up the finished pieces for her to see. For some reason, he looked a lot like a giant puppy waiting for praise from its owner.

Maeve couldn’t help smiling, then quickly jumped down from the porch and hurried over to him. "That’s good! That’s really good!" she said, clapping her hands happily. "Cerus, you did an amazing job. Thank you!"

The smile on Cerus’s face immediately grew wider.

Maeve walked over to the pile of wood and carefully picked up one of the pieces. She checked another one, then another.

"They all look perfect!" she said. "Now I just need to smooth them with sandstone and carve the numbers onto them."

At first, she felt satisfied looking at the large pile of rulers, then she counted that there were around sixty.

Maeve’s smile slowly disappeared. Sixty? Why had she made sixty of them?

Suddenly, creating the first ruler in the settlement didn’t feel nearly as exciting as it had a few hours ago.

But whatever. She would only finish ten of them for now and leave the rest for another day. Maybe when she had more time or when she wasn’t feeling lazy.

Honestly, she had already lost most of her motivation to continue working on them.

Besides, her stomach was starting to growl, and her back felt sore from spending the entire day sitting, standing, teaching, planning, and working.

"Unfortunately, it’s getting dark," Maeve said, glancing up at the evening sky. The last rays of sunlight were already beginning to fade. "I think we should continue tomorrow."

Then she pointed at the pile of rulers. "Let’s move them inside for now."

The rulers weren’t going anywhere, and right now, Maeve was much more interested in dinner than the future of measurement technology.

Thankfully, even though there was still no sign of Ikarus returning with the Clouds anytime soon, the settlement still had some dried meat in storage. On top of that, there was also fresh Lunel meat from the hunt earlier that morning.

Since Maeve could no longer ignore her hunger, the cooks of the Azuryn Tribe simply roasted the meat and brought it to her hut.

The moment Maeve saw the amount of food they had prepared, she nearly choked. "No, this is way too much," she said, quickly waving her hands. "I know you all want to take good care of me, but you need to share the meat with everyone else too."

The cooks exchanged confused looks. One of them, Zini, stepped forward. "Oh, don’t worry, Leader," she said with a smile. "We’ve been used to eating very little every day for a long time, so you—"

Before she could finish speaking, Maeve’s expression immediately changed because that wasn’t the comforting answer she had been hoping to hear.

"That’s even worse!" Maeve said, throwing her hands into the air. "You’re all much bigger than me, so I know you need more food than I do."

She pointed at the huge pile of meat before her. "Besides, wild beast meat is packed with nutrients. If I eat too much of it, I might end up making myself sick."

It wasn’t that Maeve had a small appetite. In fact, ever since she became pregnant, she had been eating more than usual.

But this? This was ridiculous.

The amount of meat sitting in front of her was so large that it looked as if the tribe had roasted an entire Lunel just for her.

Maeve quickly grabbed a clay plate and started putting some meat onto it. The portion she chose was perfectly normal for her. Actually, she had even taken a little more than she normally would.

Holding up the plate, she declared proudly, "This is enough for me!"

The cooks, however, looked absolutely heartbroken. "Oh, Goddess," one of them said sadly, "please don’t starve yourself like this!"

Maeve nearly dropped her plate. Starve herself? If she ate all the meat they had prepared, her stomach would probably explode.

"No, no, no!" she said quickly. "I’m not starving myself at all!" She dramatically pointed at herself. "Look at me!"

The cooks obediently looked.

"I’m half your size," Maeve continued. "Of course I don’t need to eat as much as you do. That’s completely normal."

She pointed at the mountain of meat again. "And like I said before, if I eat all of that, I’ll probably end up sick instead. Do you want me to get sick?"

The cooks immediately shook their heads so hard that Maeve worried they might hurt their necks. "Of course not, Goddess!"

"We really didn’t mean that!"

"Goddess, please don’t be angry with us!"

"No, I’m not angry with any of you!" Maeve said quickly. "I know you’re only doing this because you care about me, so... I’m really not upset."

To be honest, she didn’t want to keep arguing about it any longer. Her stomach was beginning to hurt from hunger, and she had a feeling that if she didn’t eat something soon, she might actually pass out.

At this point, even the delicious smell of the roasted meat felt like torture. Fortunately, Cerus heard the loud growl coming from her stomach, so he immediately said, "I’ll let you know if she wants more food. But for now, if you’ll excuse her, she needs to eat."

The cooks immediately stepped back. "Of course!"

"Please enjoy your meal, Goddess!"

Maeve had never been so grateful to hear someone end a conversation for her.

Without wasting another second, she sat down with her plate and prepared to attack her dinner before her stomach declared war on the rest of her body.
