Chapter 59: The Chopping Expert (1)
"That’s... not a problem," Maeve replied, though she sounded a little hesitant.
When she thought about it, sleeping while hugging one of her mates wasn’t exactly uncommon, but it wasn’t something she did every day either. Most of the time, there was usually a reason behind it, such as cold weather or when she wasn’t feeling well.
Because of that, hugging one of her mates while sleeping for no particular reason felt a little awkward.
Still, Cerus had worked hard all day and had definitely earned his reward, so Maeve didn’t mind doing it.
"But... you have to help me make the measuring tools first," she said awkwardly.
She began pacing around the hut, looking like someone whose thoughts were running in ten different directions at once.
After a while, she stopped in front of the wooden plank that was still untouched.
"Come on, go grab an axe—" she started, then she immediately frowned. "No, wait. Not an axe. Maybe a saw instead. Do you even have a stone saw?"
A second later, Maeve shook her head. "Actually, never mind. Just bring whatever tool you normally use to cut wood into smaller pieces."
Cerus simply nodded. Without saying another word, he left the hut. A few minutes later, he returned carrying a stone adze. It looked somewhat similar to an axe, but the blade was curved instead of straight.
To be honest, the tool looked a little strange. Still, Maeve didn’t question it because she was fairly sure she had seen something similar in a documentary about primitive societies back on Earth.
"How many chops do you want me to make, wife?" Cerus asked.
Maeve immediately raised a hand to stop him before he could even bring the blade near the wooden plank. "No, no, no. We can’t just cut it randomly," she said.
Cerus paused. "Why not?"
"Because I want to turn this into rulers."
"Rulers?" Cerus repeated with a frown.
Maeve nodded. "Yes. You’ve already learned how to count, right? So now it’s time to put those numbers to use."
She patted the wooden plank in front of her. "We’re going to carve numbers onto these pieces of wood so we can measure the length and width of things properly."
Maeve could practically see the confusion floating around his head, but she ignored it. "We could use centimeters or inches," she muttered, slipping into thought. A moment later, she nodded to herself. "Let’s just use centimeters."
After making that decision, the first thing Maeve did was turn to Pinky for help. ’Can you show me the exact measurements on the plank?’ she asked silently. ’I don’t know... maybe you can use some kind of projector light or something like that?’
[Pinky normally doesn’t help the Host for free, but... since you’re quite entertaining, Pinky is willing to help this time!] Pinky said cheerfully. The little creature even bounced up and down in the air as it spoke.
Maeve couldn’t help frowning because there were plenty of things about her life here that could be considered entertaining.
Was it her sex life? The fact that all of her mates were ridiculously huge? Or maybe it was the countless times she had nearly died since arriving in this world?
Honestly, Maeve wasn’t sure which one Pinky was talking about.
Still, as long as she was getting free help, she decided not to think too deeply about it.
A few moments later, a soft pink light appeared above the wooden plank. Thin glowing lines spread across the wood, followed by perfectly spaced measurement marks.
The measurements were so precise that all she had to do was mark the lengths she wanted.
Since the wooden plank had cost her a small fortune, she had no intention of wasting any of it. After thinking for a moment, she decided to cut off only fifty centimeters from the full plank.
The board itself was thirty centimeters wide, which meant she could divide it into ten smaller pieces and if she thinned the wood down afterward, she could make even more rulers from the same piece.
The more Maeve calculated, the happier she became. For once, it felt like the black market hadn’t completely robbed her blind.
"Alright, it’s time for you to do the chopping!" Maeve announced, clapping her hands as she happily handed the difficult part of the job over to Cerus.
Cerus didn’t complain. He immediately picked up his tools and started cutting the wooden plank according to Maeve’s instructions.
Since he didn’t want to fill the hut with flying wood splinters, he chose to work outside instead. Maeve followed him out and watched from the side.
At first, she had expected the process to be slow and difficult. After all, turning a thick wooden plank into dozens of smaller pieces sounded like a lot of work.
But she quickly realized she had underestimated Cerus. He was ridiculously good at chopping things.
The wooden plank that had looked so large and sturdy in Maeve’s eyes seemed completely helpless in his hands. With a few clean strikes, he cut it into smaller sections exactly where she wanted.
He even had a thin axe specially suited for splitting wood. Using it, he carefully shaved down the thickness of the plank and turned it into thinner pieces.
Watching him work was strangely satisfying. For a moment, Maeve wondered if chopping things apart was some kind of natural talent shared by all Azuryn tribe or maybe it was just Cerus.
But to be honest, Maeve couldn’t help but think that he was kind of... attractive while chopping the wood. The way his muscles kept flexing and moving with each swing made it difficult not to notice him.
Maeve didn’t even realize that she had been staring the entire time with her mouth slightly open.
[Just so you know, Host, you have to get married in the Mating Cave before you can mate with him.] Pinky suddenly whispered right beside her ear.
Oh, damn it!
’I’m just enjoying the view!’ she immediately shot back. ’It’s not like I want to have sex with him right now!’
Pinky floated there silently for a moment. [But you’re horny, Host.]
