Chapter 489: Chapter 489: Phoenix Golding Wants to Die
The air instantly fell silent, but it was the calm before the storm. A few seconds later, all hell broke loose. Phoebe Huxley and Raina leaped to their feet in excitement. The shock nearly sent Phoebe Thorne into labor. She pressed a hand to her stomach, as if pushing the baby back in. ’Even if you’re coming out,’ she thought, ’you have to wait until I’ve heard all the gossip before you’re born.’
"What son? Who is it?"
The three women were ecstatic. This was gossip of the highest order! ’That shameless pair actually had a little bastard together!’ Such a scandalous, outrageous affair, and they were only just finding out now. It was too thrilling.
Facing three pairs of piercing eyes, Jim Thorne had no choice but to temporarily abandon his grand mission of eating and answer their questions. Otherwise, six slaps would surely rain down on him, and he could forget about ever getting into Aethelgard University.
"It’s Ulysses Spann. The little bastard looks just like Storm Xavier. My source also said that every time Phoenix Golding claimed to have chickenpox, she was actually off giving birth. She had a baby for every bout of ’chickenpox’ she had."
"It wasn’t giving birth, it was getting an abortion."
Tang Xiaonan corrected him, then asked innocently, "Grandma, why would getting an abortion give you chickenpox?"
"A child like you has no business asking about such things. Just eat your food."
Raina ignored her. She wouldn’t have such filthy matters dirtying her granddaughter’s ears. The reminder, however, jogged her memory. A few years back, Phoenix Golding had indeed come down with "chickenpox" twice. At the time, they had even gossiped behind her back that the Golding family was different even when it came to chickenpox, but no one had considered *that* possibility. Who could have imagined Phoenix Golding would have the audacity to so brazenly cuckold Vernon Spann?
’Recovery after an abortion requires a period of rest, just like the confinement period after giving birth. Vernon Spann isn’t dead; he must have known what was going on. But that man didn’t say a word and even defended Phoenix Golding’s reputation in public. What a complete coward.’
"Ulysses Spann and Storm Xavier really do look alike! The more I think about it, the more I see it. How did we never notice before?" Phoebe Huxley slapped her thigh as if she’d just discovered a new continent.
Phoebe Thorne sneered, "Who could have guessed she was that kind of person back then? We all thought she was a respectable woman. That bitch is a master actress; she had the whole village wrapped around her little finger. Now her true colors are finally showing."
Raina slapped her thigh. A thought struck her, and she shouted to Felix Thorne, "Felix! After you finish eating, go tell your sixth and fourth uncles. They need to know about this."
"Got it."
Felix Thorne quickly shoveled down the rest of his rice, got up, and went out. Millstone Peak was about to be in an uproar again. He reckoned Phoenix Golding wouldn’t even be able to stay on Millstone Peak after this.
But he felt not a shred of sympathy. On the contrary, he found it satisfying. ’That bitch brought this on herself. She’d deserve it even if she dropped dead.’
Phoenix Golding pushed her bicycle, walking slowly like a zombie. She couldn’t remember how she had left the town. Her lover had been dragged away by his wife, that shrew who had given her another beating. Her lover had just stood on the sidelines, not saying a single word in her defense, watching with his own eyes as that tigress beat her black and blue.
"HSSS..."
Phoenix Golding couldn’t help but groan. Every inch of her body ached. With each step, it felt as if her bones were breaking. Her head was about to explode, and her vision kept going black. Phoenix Golding stumbled onward, one unsteady step after another, with no idea where she was going, and even less of an idea of what she would do tomorrow.
’My job is probably gone. The teaching position I schemed so hard to get is now down the drain. It’s all gone.’ Phoenix Golding’s heart ached at the thought. A monthly salary of over twenty yuan, gone just like that. ’How am I supposed to go on?’
’And what happened in town today... the Thorne family will surely spread it all over the village, adding their own twisted details. How can I possibly go on living?’
A cold shiver ran down Phoenix Golding’s spine, and she didn’t dare take another step. In the distance, she could faintly make out the glimmer of water and hear its gentle burble. As if drawn by some unseen force, Phoenix Golding walked to the riverbank, wanting to jump in and end it all.
