Chapter 488: Chapter 488: The Whole Family is Happy
Felix Thorne was drawn over as well. No wonder their third son was back so late—he must have gone into town to catch an adulterer. Jim Thorne tried to build the suspense, but the impatient couple each gave him a smack.
"Spit it out!"
Tang Xiaonan’s lips twitched. ’So that’s why Third Brother always gets single-digit test scores,’ she thought. ’They must have knocked the sense right out of his perfectly good head.’
Jim Thorne nonchalantly rubbed his head and started recounting the day’s great drama of catching the adulterers. He hadn’t even gotten to the part about the public shaming parade when Phoebe Huxley slapped her thigh in excitement, her eyes gleaming as she let out a long, satisfied sigh.
"That rotten bitch finally got what was coming to her! The heavens are finally watching!"
Phoebe Huxley felt more blissful than if she had eaten a mythical Ginsengfruit. She had been bottling up her resentment for nearly twenty years, and now, within her lifetime, she had finally lived to see that bitch meet her downfall. Overcome with excitement, Phoebe Huxley was desperate to share the wonderful news with her mother-in-law and sister-in-law.
"Go on, get your grandma and the others!"
Amanda Chapman was about to run off and fetch them, but Jim Thorne stopped her. With his long legs, he was a faster runner. In no time, Raina came over, helping along a much plumper Phoebe Thorne. Byron Thorne wasn’t home; he had gone to play chess with Shane Thorne after dinner.
"What’s going on?" Raina asked urgently.
"Goldie caught that bitch Phoenix in the act! She was having an affair with some official in town, and Goldie cornered them. He took their clothes, and the whole town saw it all!" Phoebe Huxley said excitedly.
Raina clapped her hands together, her eyes narrowing with glee. "The heavens do have eyes! We finally lived to see that bitch get her comeuppance. She’s going to lose her job over this for sure, right?"
"There’s no way she’s keeping it. If the school doesn’t fire that bitch, I’ll grab a megaphone and shout at the school gates every single day." Phoebe Huxley sneered. ’She wouldn’t rest until Phoenix Golding was completely ruined.’
Raina nodded. "Exactly. We have to ruin that bitch and make it so she can’t even show her face in Clearspring Township again. Back in the day, a tramp like her would have been paraded through the streets. The spit alone would have drowned her."
"Oh, he did parade them!" Amanda Chapman chimed in excitedly. "Goldie tied that shameless pair up and marched them all around town. Everyone threw rotten vegetable leaves at them. It was disgusting!"
The eyes of the mother- and daughter-in-law duo shone brighter than lightbulbs. They both simultaneously revised their opinion of Goldie Thorne. ’Turns out the boy is pretty useful when it counts.’
"I don’t think Phoenix Golding can live this down, can she?" Phoebe Thorne conjectured.
A few years back in Wraven, there was a woman who’d been unfaithful, and she was also paraded through the streets. She had been a young, unmarried girl who, in a moment of folly, was duped by a scoundrel and made a terrible mistake. After the public shaming, the woman lost her mind. She would strip her clothes in front of anyone she met, calling herself a whore. She was dead within a few years.
Very few women could go on living after something like that. The thought that Phoenix Golding might actually die left Phoebe Thorne feeling a bit unsettled. It wasn’t that she felt sorry for Phoenix Golding; she was just struck by the gravity of it all.
Phoebe Huxley sneered with contempt. "A whore like that lost all sense of shame long ago. She’ll be just fine."
But Raina shook her head. "She won’t be fine. Once her salary’s gone, she won’t even be able to afford pickled vegetables. She’ll have nothing to eat but air."
This cheered Phoebe Huxley right up. As long as Phoenix Golding was miserable, she was happy. ’I’m going to live a hundred times better than that bitch,’ she vowed to herself. ’I’ll eat the finest food and drink the best wine every day. I’ll even wave a piece of meat right in her face while I eat, just to see if it makes her drop dead from fury.’
She did have one regret, though. "But that bastard Storm Xavier got away. Does that mean she and Storm Xavier broke up?"
"Probably. Storm Xavier doesn’t have any money, so Phoenix Golding couldn’t get anything out of him. They must have broken up ages ago," Phoebe Thorne agreed. Someone as pragmatic as Phoenix Golding would only sleep with a man if there was something in it for her. Aside from a handsome face, Storm Xavier had nothing to offer. Phoenix Golding had probably grown tired of him long ago.
"They didn’t break up! They have a son together!" Jim Thorne yelled.
