Chapter 485: Chapter 485: Sympathy

Clayton Xavier wiped his eyes and sniffled. A lump formed in his throat. He hated this side of himself, but he couldn’t help it.

Finding himself alone here, he finally let himself cry.

He didn’t even know why he was crying. He just felt awful—not for himself, but for his mother.

If his mother hadn’t married his father, if she hadn’t given birth to him, her life would have been so much better. She wouldn’t have had to work so hard. Clayton Xavier knew his mother no longer had any feelings for his father. The only reason she remained with the Xavier family was for him.

He was the one dragging his mother down.

Clayton Xavier sniffled again, his eyes hardening with resolve. He had to make money. A lot of money. So his mother could live a comfortable life.

He would never give his father another chance to call him a useless bum.

"Mr. Xavier!"

A sweet, soft voice called out from behind him. Clayton Xavier frantically wiped his eyes. He couldn’t let anyone see him in such a pathetic state.

A moment later, Adrian Hawthorne and the others walked over. Clayton Xavier forced a smile, his eyes red. Everyone pretended not to notice, acting as if everything was normal.

"Let’s head back together."

Adrian Hawthorne said flatly. ’He used to want Clayton Xavier to fall into an abyss, to taste the cruelty and suffering of the world, to see the warm smile and clear eyes vanish from his face. He had thought about it countless times.’

’But now that the day had actually come, he felt no joy.’

Clayton Xavier breathed a sigh of relief, assuming Adrian Hawthorne and the others hadn’t seen clearly because of the dim light. The group started walking back together. No one spoke, the only sound being the varying rhythm of their footsteps.

When they reached the place where they had hidden their things, Adrian Hawthorne and Jim Thorne pulled out a vehicle and a large sack. Clayton Xavier’s eyes widened in surprise. ’What’s in that huge sack?’

And Adrian Hawthorne had actually bought a vehicle? ’Where did he get that much money?’

"GRUMBLE..."

Jim Thorne clutched his stomach, looking a little embarrassed. Then Armstrong Huxley’s stomach rumbled too, followed by Tang Xiaonan’s. It was well past dinnertime, and everyone was hungry.

"I have some food in my bag."

Adrian Hawthorne took a few cold meat buns from his bag and handed them out. Clayton Xavier got one too. ’He didn’t hate him as much anymore; he even found him a little pitiable.’

"Thanks."

Clayton Xavier accepted the bun. It was a meat bun, a treat he rarely got to eat. He was puzzled. ’Why does Adrian Hawthorne have so much money? And what on earth is in that giant sack?’

Adrian Hawthorne gave Tang Xiaonan a pastry instead. "This is from Madman. There’s a Coke for you too. I’ll give it to you when we get home."

Tang Xiaonan was a little surprised. She hadn’t expected that Madman to keep her in mind. ’Hmm... I’ll have to find a way to change his fate, too.’

"This is called a wife cake. It’s a pastry from Capria, and it’s delicious," Adrian Hawthorne said with a smile.

Tang Xiaonan looked down at it. It really was a wife cake. She couldn’t resist joking, "Is there a wife inside the wife cake?"

Adrian Hawthorne froze. "What?"

He didn’t understand at all.

Tang Xiaonan giggled. "Nothing. This cake is delicious. Mr. Hawthorne, can you take me to Capria for summer vacation? Please?"

"No."

Adrian Hawthorne rejected the idea without a second thought. ’Taking this chubby girl along is too much trouble. I’d have to worry about Madman trying to snatch her away. It’s exhausting. It’s much easier to travel light and alone.’

Tang Xiaonan pouted. ’Fine, don’t take me. I’ll just go by myself in the future.’

Clayton Xavier’s expression, however, grew more and more surprised. Hearing "Capria" mentioned again and again, he wondered, ’Did Adrian Hawthorne just come back from Capria?’

Jim Thorne finished his bun and blurted out, "How much stuff did you bring back this time?"

Adrian Hawthorne shot him a warning glare. Only then did Jim Thorne realize his slip of the tongue and scratch his head in embarrassment. Clayton Xavier spoke up on his own accord, "Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone."
