Chapter 484: Chapter 484: Brothers
Clayton Xavier ground his teeth, the veins on his forehead bulging. A fire seemed to burn in his eyes, making them terrifyingly bright.
He knew who they were talking about. Ulysses Spann was exactly seven years old. As he recalled, Ulysses’s eyes and brows did indeed resemble his father’s. He had never made the connection before, but now that he was thinking about it, more and more suspicious details began to surface.
Not long ago, Ulysses Spann had been bullied at school, and his father had actually stepped in, causing a scene with a group of children and making a complete fool of himself. Looking back, his father must have known who Ulysses was. That was why he had been so protective of him.
Hah...
Clayton Xavier sneered, his gaze icy and sarcastic. ’Father... He doesn’t deserve that title.’
Phoenix Golding, who had been as stiff as a corpse, suddenly flinched at the mention of an illegitimate son. She recklessly lifted her head and shouted, "That’s not true! You’re talking nonsense! Ulysses is my son! He has nothing to do with Storm Xavier!"
But she would have been better off staying quiet. Her outburst was a dead giveaway. Even those who had been skeptical were now convinced. A few women standing nearby spat at Phoenix Golding in disgust.
The scene descended into chaos. Goldie Thorne and Jim Thorne’s group quietly slipped away. Mission accomplished. Phoenix Golding would definitely lose her job now, and she’d spend the rest of her life being scorned. The Golding family wouldn’t tolerate her either. ’Let’s see how the bitch survives now.’
"Let’s go home!"
Adrian Hawthorne was in a great mood. He hoisted Tang Xiaonan onto his back. He had shot up in height over the past few months, as if making up for all the years he hadn’t grown. Now almost as tall as Jim Thorne, he could carry Tang Xiaonan with ease.
Goldie Thorne and the others came over, all looking smug. After holding in their anger for two months, they had finally gotten to vent. Now they could go back and report that the job was done.
"You guys head home first. I’m going for a drink with my boys."
Goldie Thorne planned to treat his buddies to dinner and drinks. These friends of his had put in a lot of effort for him, and he needed to show his appreciation. Otherwise, who would be willing to do his dirty work in the future?
The guys left with their arms around each other’s shoulders, not at all worried about Jim Thorne and the other kids walking home in the dark. It was only a few miles, and they were all tall and sturdy. What could possibly happen?
"We should head back, too."
Jim Thorne took Tang Xiaonan from Adrian Hawthorne’s back. ’She’s my sister; no one else gets to carry her.’ Adrian felt a sudden sense of loss and shot Jim an irritated glare.
They walked for half a mile or so, nearly leaving the town behind. Ahead of them was a small path, and the sky had already grown dark. Fortunately, Adrian Hawthorne had brought a flashlight.
"Is that Mr. Xavier over there?"
Tang Xiaonan whispered, pointing ahead.
Jim Thorne took a few steps forward and peered ahead. "It’s Clayton Xavier. What’s he doing?"
"Let’s go see," Armstrong Huxley said, starting to walk over to greet Clayton Xavier.
Adrian Hawthorne suddenly grabbed him and shook his head slightly. "Wait a minute before you go over."
If he wasn’t mistaken, Clayton Xavier was crying.
Besides, Clayton Xavier had definitely heard all of that. To learn about his own father’s filthy deeds from the mouths of strangers, and to suddenly discover he had a half-brother that old—the shock must have been immense.
Still, Adrian Hawthorne looked down on Clayton Xavier’s weakness. ’What is there to cry about? It’s better to just disown a scumbag father like that. What good does crying do?’
But his own mood wasn’t much better. His father didn’t seem to be all that great, either. That woman Crazy Gramps had mentioned... her relationship with his father couldn’t possibly have been innocent. Otherwise, Crazy Gramps wouldn’t have mistaken her for his mother.
Adrian Hawthorne gave a self-deprecating laugh. ’I have no right to make fun of Clayton Xavier. We’re practically brothers, both in the same miserable boat.’
