Chapter 480: Chapter 480: Jealousy
Although Nancy did her best to resist, trying everything from pouting to playing cute, Adrian Hawthorne was unmoved. He didn’t lower his hands for a second. He even took it a step further and covered her ears, worried that the nasty things some people were saying would corrupt her innocent little mind.
Nancy had already given up the struggle. ’Fine, I won’t watch. It’s not like this is any more exciting than a movie, anyway. When I’m older, I’ll be able to watch whatever I want, and Adrian Hawthorne won’t be able to boss me around anymore.’
"It’s a shame they didn’t catch Storm Xavier."
Nancy was still disappointed that Storm Xavier had gotten away. That man was even more repulsive.
Adrian Hawthorne sneered. "He won’t get away."
With Ulysses Spann providing so much leverage, Storm Xavier couldn’t hope to escape.
An idea suddenly struck Nancy. "Mr. Hawthorne," she began, "Mr. Xavier has it so rough. Why don’t you bring him into your business? Please?"
Adrian Hawthorne’s expression flickered, and a sour feeling bubbled up inside him. He carried Nancy away from the crowd before finally lowering his hands. "Why should I bring him into my business?" he asked, feigning indifference.
Nancy didn’t sense his displeasure and said earnestly, "Auntie Verna has it so hard. She works all day and barely earns anything. Mr. Xavier wants to help her make money, so you could help him, Mr. Hawthorne!"
"Why should I help him? We’re not friends."
Adrian Hawthorne rejected the idea without a second thought, the sour feeling in his heart growing stronger. ’What’s so pitiful about Clayton Xavier? At least he has his mom and grandma to look after him. He doesn’t have to worry about food and clothes, and nobody bullies him. How is a guy living such a charmed life pitiful in any way?’
’That little fatty probably just thinks Clayton Xavier is handsome. Hmph!’
Nancy stared at him for a long time without a word. Her gaze made Adrian Hawthorne feel uneasy, and he turned his head away, his expression awkward.
Nancy just assumed he didn’t like Clayton Xavier. ’After all, in the book, Adrian Hawthorne and Clayton Xavier were mortal enemies. They were like oil and water, fighting every time they saw each other.’
"Mr. Hawthorne, you’re going to run a huge business someday, and you won’t be able to manage it all by yourself," Nancy cajoled. "Mr. Xavier could help you." She truly believed that Clayton Xavier and Adrian Hawthorne would make the perfect partners.
Adrian Hawthorne froze for a second. He looked down and saw the sincerity in Nancy’s eyes and felt a little embarrassed. ’Could I have misunderstood her?’
"You think I can build a big business?"
Nancy nodded emphatically, without a trace of hesitation. "Of course you can! You’re the most amazing person there is, Mr. Hawthorne!"
Her unstinting praise made Adrian Hawthorne blush, and the jealousy in his heart melted away. ’So, in her eyes, I’m the most capable one,’ he thought. ’Clayton Xavier doesn’t even compare.’
"Clayton Xavier can’t help me." Adrian was still unwilling to work with someone he detested.
’Just seeing the guy’s warm smile was irritating.’
Nancy was a little disappointed. She hadn’t expected Adrian Hawthorne to dislike Clayton Xavier so intensely, especially since they hadn’t had any real conflicts yet. ’They must just be natural-born rivals,’ she concluded. She didn’t press the issue, deciding it was best to try persuading him again some other time. Pushing it now would only make him more resistant.
Meanwhile, Clayton Xavier was also in town, helping his mother sell eggs. Verna Golding had never let him do such chores before, but Clayton had been so insistent this time that she had to relent and let him handle some of the lighter tasks.
Clayton was shy. He came to town after lunch, but for half the day he was too timid to call out to potential customers, afraid of the embarrassment. It wasn’t until a kind older woman approached him that he finally sold the eggs. Afterward, instead of heading straight home, Clayton wandered through town, looking for other ways to make money.
