Although Nancy did her best to resist, trying everything from pouting to playing cute, Adrian Hawthorne was unmoved. He didn’t lower his hands for a second. Nancy didn’t sense his displeasure and said earnestly, "Auntie Verna has it so hard. She works all day and barely earns anything. Mr. Xavier wants to help her make money, so you could help him, Mr. Hawthorne!"

"Why should I help him? We’re not friends."
