Chapter 1128: 740 is just so annoying_2
Du Heng was taken aback, standing stunned at the office door for two seconds.
However, in those two seconds of stunned silence, he once again heard sounds coming from the office.
Listening to Ding Yuxue’s furious voice and the placating, consoling words of other colleagues, Du Heng shook his head helplessly. I’ve done my best, and this is all that can be done, he thought. With that, he turned and left, heading towards the school where Wu Shengnan was studying.
Meanwhile, Mr. Feng, who had been there earlier, was truly a man of his word; he did exactly as he said he would.
After re-entering the room and hesitating for a moment, he approached the still-furious Ding Yuxue.
"Professor Ding, please calm down. Look at you, you’re scaring the child," Mr. Feng said softly, walking over to Ding Yuxue and gently pulling the frightened child to his side.
It didn’t end with just pulling the child over; he then bent down and began to examine the child carefully.
From skin to hair, from eyes to lips, he meticulously inspected everything, even taking the child’s pulse himself.
However, he still couldn’t arrive at the diagnosis Du Heng had mentioned—a problem with the child’s kidneys.
Ding Yuxue’s chest heaved with anger. After Mr. Feng lowered his hand, she said indignantly, "Mr. Feng, you’ve examined him yourself now, haven’t you? There’s no problem, right? I, Ding Yuxue, may not be highly skilled, but I can certainly tell the difference between pneumonia and a common cold."
After Ding Yuxue finished speaking, she gasped for breath twice. Once she had calmed down a little, she spoke again, "Tell me, don’t you all think that Du fellow is utterly despicable? No, no, no, he’s not just despicable, he’s utterly malicious! A complete scoundrel!"
The surrounding colleagues began to console Ding Yuxue, some even offering her questionable advice, and for a moment, the office became quite lively.
At this time, Mr. Feng, who was squatting on the ground, frowned. Indeed, he hadn’t found anything during his examination. But when he recalled Du Heng’s expression as they parted, it made him hesitate.
Although he hadn’t interacted much with Du Heng, the fact that Du Heng—a graduate from an obscure School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the mainland—could directly join the school’s staff and even have an associate professor position reserved for him that year, made it impossible for Mr. Feng to overlook him.
Similarly, having learned about Du Heng’s past, he didn’t believe Du Heng would be so sinister and despicable as to use a child in his schemes.
Mr. Feng began to lose his confidence and hesitated even more. Could it be that Du Heng’s skills are really too advanced, while my own are too inferior? he wondered.
After some thought, he slowly stood up. "Professor Ding, please calm down."
"How can I calm down?" Ding Yuxue was still unyielding. "He practically cursed my son! How can I possibly calm down? No, this can’t be over just like this. I’m going to the Dean! I want him to see just what kind of person he insisted on recruiting!"
For Ding Yuxue, old grievances and new anger surged up together. As soon as the words left her mouth, she grabbed her child and was genuinely about to storm out.
Mr. Feng quickly blocked her path. "Professor Ding, don’t be impulsive. We’re all colleagues here, and besides, perhaps Mr. Du is telling the truth."
"Truth, my ass!" Ding Yuxue swore loudly, clearly incandescent with rage.
Hearing Ding Yuxue’s outburst, Mr. Feng was also taken aback but said, "Professor Ding, the child is right here. Please watch your language."
Ding Yuxue glanced down at her son, a flicker of apology in her eyes vanishing as quickly as it appeared. Then, she looked up, still intending to leave.
Left with no choice, Mr. Feng blocked Ding Yuxue again. "Professor Ding, it’s not that you can’t go to the Dean, but if you go to him like this, aren’t you just putting him in a difficult position?"
"With so many witnesses here, why would he be in a difficult position? Today, I must get an explanation for this—for myself and for my son!"
Mr. Feng tried to reason with her patiently. "Professor Ding, have you considered that what Mr. Du said might actually be true? He’s considered an expert-level doctor now; I don’t believe he’d just spout nonsense. What if he’s telling the truth? If that’s the case, you’ll not only put the Dean in an awkward position but yourself as well. And more importantly, wouldn’t that delay the child’s treatment?"
Ding Yuxue was suddenly taken aback. "Mr. Feng, what do you mean by defending that Du so vehemently?"
Mr. Feng quickly held up his hands. "Please don’t misunderstand. What I mean is, why don’t you just take the child to the hospital for a check-up? Once the check-up result is out, won’t everything be clear? And you’ll have concrete evidence in your hands. Then, when you go to the Dean, you’ll be in the right no matter what, won’t you?"
Ding Yuxue was panting with anger.
However, Mr. Feng had a point, which made her involuntarily consider his suggestion.
There wasn’t much to ponder about his proposal, though. After a brief moment of consideration, she accepted Mr. Feng’s advice.
But her acceptance was based on the premise of disproving Du Heng’s words, not verifying them.
She wanted to bring the check-up result and go to the Dean to file a formal complaint. This matter can’t possibly end just like this! she fumed internally.
Du Heng, however, was unaware if the matter had concluded. His main concern at that moment was the child’s condition. But I know, given my relationship with Ding Yuxue, I can’t get involved in this, he thought. He sighed, deciding to stop dwelling on it. Let fate take its course then.
The school Wu Shengnan attended was rather particular. Registration was mandatory, requiring ID card and work information, making it far more troublesome than the School of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
By the time Du Heng finished the procedures at the main gate and slowly strolled over to where Wu Shengnan had her class, she and her classmates were just coming out of the teaching building.
Looking around, a sea of identical uniforms surged out.
However, Du Heng spotted Wu Shengnan in the crowd at a single glance.
Among them, she was the only one who was visibly pregnant.
Furthermore, the space around her was slightly clearer than around others, making it impossible for Du Heng not to spot her.
And in this place teeming with uniforms, Du Heng, dressed in casual clothes, was also quite conspicuous. Wu Shengnan saw him instantly as well.
Wu Shengnan’s initially gloomy face immediately bloomed into a smile upon seeing Du Heng. She even managed a smile for the incessantly chattering woman beside her, whom she found incredibly annoying.
"Classmate Gu, my husband is here to pick me up," Wu Shengnan said, her voice filled with unconcealed joy. "Perfect timing, let me introduce you. You can ask him to his face if he was involved in corruption before."
The woman beside Wu Shengnan abruptly stopped talking. Following Wu Shengnan’s gaze, she too quickly spotted Du Heng waiting ahead.
Looking at Wu Shengnan’s triumphant expression, the woman lifted her chin slightly. "Alright then. I’d like to see just what kind of man has you so utterly smitten."
Wu Shengnan paid no heed to the woman’s words.
As soon as she finished speaking to her, she quickened her pace towards Du Heng.
"Honey, you really came," Wu Shengnan said with a grin. "I was just kidding; I didn’t think you’d actually take it seriously."
Du Heng had a smile on his face, but inwardly he couldn’t help but scoff. What a duplicitous woman, saying one thing and meaning another.
With a hint of playful pride, Wu Shengnan turned to introduce Du Heng to the woman beside her, but unexpectedly, the woman spoke first.
"So, you’re Du Heng. You’re tall enough, and not bad looking. Classmate Wu’s judgment is finally decent for once," the woman said, looking Du Heng up and down as if inspecting livestock.
Upon seeing the woman for the first time, however, Du Heng felt an involuntary twitch at the corner of his eyebrow.
But before he or Wu Shengnan could react, the woman in front of them casually tossed her hair, put on her hat, and strode off, giving neither Du Heng nor Wu Shengnan a chance to speak.
Wu Shengnan was left momentarily speechless by the woman’s actions. After a good while, she finally said, "See? That’s how annoying she is."
