Chapter 21: 21: Poisonous garden

The two of them continued their journey through the woods. Sunnie was carrying the pot as she moved, while Little Black actively led the way, showing her everywhere.

"Don’t ever go there. It’s dangerous. Especially at night. Some weird animals stay there. Not friendly at all," he said as they moved.

"You can get fair fruits that grow here. Not so good and healthy but at least manageable. I go there a lot even though the animals who stay there can get a bit greedy!"

They moved.

"Over there, there are some decent places you could spend the night in. I go there too," he spoke proudly as he showed her everywhere.

Sunnie guessed this was really his home.

She gave him a list of the flavourings she was looking for. And the little one ran his hands through his chin.

"Hmmm that... there’s certainly a place where you can get them. The poisonous garden. But like I said, most of the things here are not edible at all. So I don’t know if you can use these things if you get them."

Sunnie stared at him. "Poisonous garden?" She was confused.

"Yep! That’s what I call it. Mainly because there are some annoying squirrels that live there. So they guard and take their area as theirs. They don’t let people take their stuff. And if people do, they fart out their poisonous smoke into the air!"

Sunnie blinked. "Huh? Squirrels do that?"

Little Black nodded. "Mmm. One time I went to steal some stuff there and got hit by their poison. I suffered for months! And worse, the stuff I stole wasn’t even good enough. Gave me really bad skin allergies as well."

Sunnie blinked. "Ah, that’s bad then.. I guess." She wondered how the hell she was supposed to get past those squirrels and also how she was supposed to use the flavourings she’d get there.

Nevertheless, they continued moving to the poisonous garden to see what fate had in store for them.

The land wasn’t as grand as Sunnie thought. It wasn’t necessarily a big garden at all. It was just a bunch of herbs, vegetables and the likes surrounding a redwood tree. There were also some weeds growing around with the veggies and herbs too.

Sunnie couldn’t help but admire the huge tall tree before her.

"Are you sure about going there? I don’t think I can face those annoying squirrels! They already hate me and I hate them too," Little Black said.

Sunnie inhaled and exhaled with a smile. "I’ll try."

She took a step forward, approaching the garden. She couldn’t help but see the varieties of vegetables and stuff there. She could already see the mushrooms, cabbages, carrots, leafy greens, onions, garlic, ginger... most of what she needed was there.

So she knew she had to get it all here!

But as she approached, she heard some noises above. Sunnie quickly looked up and caught sight of five squirrels standing on a branch and staring down at her.

She smiled. "Well, greetings people! What a nice day we’re having, isn’t it?"

They said nothing. They only made some sounds amongst themselves while staring down at Sunnie.

Sunnie smiled as she added, "Well, why don’t we sit down and have some conversations, eh? I think we have a lot to agree upon."

They made sounds amongst themselves again and stared down at Sunnie.

"They don’t speak," Little Black said from where he stood at a distance.

"Oh," Sunnie blinked. She didn’t speak squirrel language, so she guessed she’d have to find a way to communicate.

"Well.. I’ll make it brief.. I’m here to borrow some of your beautiful vegetables..." She resorted to using signs and gestures to support her speech.

The squirrels tilted their heads, staring as she continued speaking for a while. And as they understood what she wanted to do, they instantly raised their tails up, ready to fire!

Little Black panicked. "They’re on it! Run!"

But Sunnie was too shocked to even move. She immediately searched her brain to think of something.

"I’ll give you what you want in exchange for it!"

They heard it. Sunnie was surprised they did because they all stopped and stared amongst themselves and then stared down at Sunnie.

Sunnie blinked. She guessed she had them. Now what?

She began searching her brain for what these squirrels might want that she could offer. After some time, she said the most random thing that came to her mind.

"I can give you some walnuts."

To her surprise, these squirrels stared at her with curiosity as though she had mentioned a sacred item. They now looked anxious.

"How are you going to give them that? There’s no walnut around here at all!" Little Black warned.

Sunnie figured it was what they needed after all. "I can give you a lot of walnuts!" She used gestures with it. "Just let me take some things from your garden. Okay?"

They didn’t say anything. Soon, the squirrels all nodded in unison as one stretched out its little hands, requesting what she promised.

Sunnie knew she had to act and hand it to them, else they’d destroy her with their poisonous fart!

"System," she muttered. "I’d like to get some walnuts."

[Ding]

[Opening System store..]

Different sizes and amounts of walnuts appeared with different prices in the system store tab. Some were 10, some 100. And their prices varied.

Luckily, each was 2 heart coins, so she was able to get a discount of 100 walnuts for like 100 heart coins! A 50% discount.

"I guess the system store does random discounts," she sighed.

She smiled as she made the purchase.

Sunnie looked up at the tree and immediately walnuts began falling like rain!

The squirrels were filled with shock and joy at the same time. They didn’t even hesitate as they rushed and began picking them up as fast as they could.

Sunnie smiled. "Well, I guess that means I can take my flavourings too without worries."
