Chapter 536: Chapter 537: Already Appraised Enough_1
Several minutes later.
"So it really can talk..." Veronica’s eyes widened as she examined the "stray dog" before her.
"By possessing an animal, I can modify their physical structure to a certain extent, so they can produce human speech," Tony explained in a low voice.
"Then..." Veronica’s gaze sharpened in an instant, and her voice also deepened, "when I was talking to myself just now..."
"What muttering, big sister, what are you talking about, that’s so weird?" Tony said earnestly at an astonishing speed.
"What are you guys talking about?" Aiden interjected with a question.
"No, nothing at all!" Veronica quickly waved her hands and hurriedly steered the conversation back on track, "So, why is Tony like this?"
"Let me explain..."
Aiden took Tony Dodge’s experiences as the main thread and roughly explained the events to Veronica. She had a few questions at first, but she mostly remained silent and listened until he finished.
In the end, she looked at Tony with a heavy expression, "So you’ve endured so much hardship since you were young."
As someone born different from ordinary people, she could somewhat sympathize with Tony. But comparatively, she was actually a bit luckier because her body didn’t have any defects.
"It’s okay, it’s all in the past," Tony answered calmly.
"In the future, the witches’ assembly should grant him a normal body. Tony mentioned he wanted to try finding a job, and I’m considering letting him try working as a contract worker in the prison," Aiden brought up.
"The core area does have quite a few positions that need filling..." Veronica thought for a moment, "But he probably couldn’t be a riot officer, right?"
"He wouldn’t fit the correctional officer roles, but there might be opportunities in other logistical jobs," Aiden hinted at Veronica with a subtle wink, "Tomorrow, have the personnel keep an eye out for any jobs that need to be filled."
"Understood," Veronica immediately grasped her superior’s intent.
Officially it was assistance, but in reality, there was also a purpose of surveillance and observation.
"So, he’s currently staying at your place, Chief?" Veronica asked.
"Yes, for now, he can only function normally within the domain of the Wordless Code," Aiden replied.
"I see..." Veronica sighed.
That meant there wasn’t much chance of staying today, and even if she did stay, there wasn’t much chance for anything to happen... She felt a sense of disappointment.
But on second thought, whether Tony was there or not, she didn’t really have any legitimate reason to spend the night at Aiden’s place.
However, such thoughts, once they arose, couldn’t help but make one endlessly speculate. Coupled with the impact of the visits from the flower lady these days and the pile of fallacies Fille had mentioned, which kept lingering in her mind, she couldn’t help harboring some uncontrollable fantasies.
Staying any longer could lead to another awkward situation, and with that thought, Veronica stood up from her seat, "It’s getting late, Chief, I should head back."
"Won’t you have another drink?" Aiden made a polite offer to stay.
"No, thank you. You have a lot of work to deal with when you go back tomorrow, you need your rest too..." Veronica said, suppressing the regret in her heart. Suddenly, a mischievous thought came to her, and on impulse, she turned it into words, "Besides, if I have another drink, I might just pass out, and then... I won’t be able to go back at all. What would you feel then, Chief, a headache or happiness?"
After she spoke, she suddenly felt her face grow hot.
Damn, what am I saying? What if he can’t follow up, wouldn’t that just ruin the mood?
Aiden gave it a moment’s thought and responded jokingly, "That doesn’t sound too bad at all."
Veronica held her breath, almost sitting back down to pour herself another drink.
"Alright, let’s leave the jokes there, don’t always tease your boss. Be careful on your way," Aiden steered the conversation back to a more serious direction in a timely manner.
Tony looked back and forth between the two, unable to help himself from belching suddenly.
"Okay, see you tomorrow," Veronica wisely left it at that, and hurried towards the door.
Aiden saw her to the door and waved, "See you tomorrow."
After Veronica had left, Aiden had just closed the door when he heard Tony ask with surprise, "Aren’t you going to escort her home?"
"No need," Aiden dismissed with a wave of his hand.
"It’s so late and she’s walking back, aren’t you worried she might run into some bad people?" Tony asked.
"Now that would worry me," Aiden paused, "for the bad people who bump into her, she’s quite strong."
Veronica had the habit of exercising at night, she had personally sent several hoodlums and drunks to the hospital, and if she ever got physical, the others were lucky to just break a bone or two.
"Are you really not in a romantic relationship with her?" Tony inquired.
"Not at the moment," Aiden answered calmly.
"What about those two witches then?"
"Why bring them up all of a sudden?"
"I just thought you seemed to get along well with them," Tony said timidly.
"My relationship with them is purely a collaboration of interests," Aiden sensed something and challenged, "You aren’t questioning my lifestyle, are you?"
"No, not at all. It’s just that Miss Veronica seems to be quite...," Tony chose his words very carefully, finding himself at a loss for words, "you know..."
Fortunately, Aiden picked up the conversation, "Even you could see that the first time you met her, how could I possibly not see it?"
Tony thought to himself that he felt her little crush might be far more intense than Aiden imagined...
"So, you don’t like her?"
"How could I not..." Aiden sighed, "But there are priorities in everything."
The base in Sunset City had proven everything Melifilia said. Mr. Blood Coat truly wanted his life. Although there was no movement from the other party now, to fight for the Hand of Oblivion, they could kill him at any moment.
Tony nodded thoughtfully, "Honestly, I’m a bit jealous of you, but I think I should also focus on what I need to do first."
"Don’t push yourself too hard, everyone but criminals has the right to pursue happiness," Aiden said.
"You too, Mr. Galahad," Tony replied.
"By the way, are you going to eat something tonight? How about we grab some late-night snacks?" Aiden asked, as they hadn’t eaten much on the train during their journey back.
"No, I’m really full," Tony declined without hesitation, "I’ve already... sampled enough."
