Chapter 309: The Night Before

Her eyelids became heavy.

It was a sensation Alice had become familiar with.

As the time for the final submission of the papers came near, her sleep schedule was getting funnier by the day.

Some days she spent her entire day at her club, Luntara, even sleeping on her desk.

Each time Alice would endure her heavy eyelids and force herself to overwork, she started to take a shower every time she felt sleepy.

"Fuck me sideways. I want to cry."

She had to do it though.

Just three more weeks and this hell would end.

Tear...!

Tearing another piece of paper, she crumbled it into a ball, and threw it right in the direction of Leon’s table.

His side of the club had already been piled up with her crumbled papers by now.

Well, he deserved it.

As long as her side of the place was clean, that was all that mattered to her.

Leon would have his own maid for that anyway. She would just leave it there and let Myra handle it.

After Leon had left the academy, Myra had come to his table to clean up, and on the side she had even brought Alice some tea and snacks.

Unlike other noble brats, Alice never came with her own maids.

Not like she did not have any, but she just did not like walking around with people following her every step.

"...Why does my sorry ass always take more than it can handle."

She muttered to herself.

It was true though.

Because she wanted to be on top of the other research peers at Eclipse, she had taken three whole papers for her first session.

And of course she had only finished one so far.

And not only that, she had also promised Leon that she would help him build his new weapon.

A proud smile pulled at her face at the thought of it,the smile felt close to excitement.

"Huuu~ I am such a genius."

She had built something supreme for him.

With just the blueprints he had provided, she had even noticed a few small design faults and improved them on her own.

All it needed now was for him to approve one final detail.

But then again, she was impressed by how Leon was able to come up with something like this in the first place.

Seriously, that guy was on the next level.

Before joining Eclipse, Alice had never once thought that she would find someone like him here.

Well, she also had never thought she would ever make a friend at all much less a boy.

"Lady Alice? You are up again?"

Myra came in from the door.

"Ahhh, Myraaaaa~"

Alice was overjoyed to see her.

Myra walked toward her holding a tray containing tea and some snacks which Alice liked.

Alice popped her head to the side to see what she was carrying.

"Ooo! So good."

It was her favorite Honey Salt Cake.

Her sleep was gone now.

"Hey Myra. What do you think about becoming my maid, and leaving that idiot?"

"I have to politely refuse you, Lady Alice. Also I would prefer if you did not address the young master that way."

Myra, after serving her, went to Leon’s table to pick up the mess Alice had made.

Alice took a pastry and cut it with a fork.

"Mhh, delicious. I still can not believe you can make something this delicious. Fuck, I am so jealous of him now."

Myra did her chores quietly.

Then she walked back to Alice, taking out an envelope from her side pocket.

A red colored envelope with the Liora Kingdom’s stamp pressed on it.

"This came for you this morning. I picked it up from the front of your room this evening."

"What is it?"

Alice wiped her hand on her sleeve and took the envelope from her.

The first thing she noticed was the royal crest pressed on the front.

"From the Royal Palace?"

Flipping it around, she read the front line clearly.

[To Alice Nightson]

’I wonder what it is...’

Tearing it open, she pulled out the paper inside, and quickly read its contents.

"What the—"

The letter was an official invitation from the Queen of Liora, inviting Alice to attend the banquet the palace was holding tomorrow night.

Now, Alice could tear any invitation apart if she saw one.

But this one caught her eyes because of what was written further inside it.

Especially on the purpose of the banquet.

It was an invitation to officially celebrate the formation of the new Kingdom of Evana.

And to also mark Liora’s first official contact with them.

All the nobles of Duke status had been invited by the royal palace personally, each and every one of them.

Alice turned to Myra.

"Did Leon get one too?"

Myra shook her head.

"None."

"Huh? That’s weird..."

She looked at the letter again.

’He should have gotten one too.’

’Did he pull some funny stunts at the palace?’

Well, Leon did tell her how he had mocked the King before.

Maybe that was the case and he had been blacklisted from the royal invitations.

As Alice was reading, Myra bowed and said politely.

"I will take my leave now, Lady Alice. Please rest after you are done, or you will get sick."

"Uh, alright."

Alice saw her walk out of the room.

She rested lazily back on her chair.

"Haaaah! A banquet..."

She did not really like attending balls or banquets.

But this one was different, because the letter stated that a few officials were also being invited from Evana tomorrow.

It was the first time the world would see them, and so was their rumored technology.

Alice, as a person who was highly interested, wanted to see with her own eyes how advanced they really are.

Alice had decided.

"..."

But there was a problem.

Alice did not have anything good to wear at all.

Surely she had some before,

She needed to present herself in front of Evana properly, and not look like a scholar who had rolled out of her club at the last moment.

She herself understood that after Evana had returned, times had changed now.

Every other kingdom wanted to have Evana on their favor. Liora was already doing their best to secure it.

She would have to go out after class tomorrow. For a little shopping.

Her eyes fell onto Leon’s desk again.

The pile of paper was gone.

And now there was a long instrument placed there, covered by a white cloth.

’I can get lucky...’

Alice was thinking if she could discuss her own tech with them.

If Evana was as advanced as the rumors suggested, then meeting with even one of their engineers could open doors she had never even known existed.

’Yeah...’

Alice let out a slow breath as her eyes drifted back to the white cloth on Leon’s desk.

’This might actually be a good thing.’

. . .

After Leon was done with Eula, he returned to his room.

Click...

Closing the door behind him, he changed back into his comfortable clothes and slid right into his blanket.

On the back of his mind, Eula’s last interaction was replaying itself.

She had asked Leon if he was free tomorrow.

Leon had said he was, and after that, she had invited him for a banquet which would be held at the palace tomorrow night.

She had told him that everyone had been invited except him. Because of how he had pissed off the King the last time he had gone there.

Clearly his name had been deliberately removed by the King himself.

Now the banquet was being held for the sake of welcoming Evana as Liora’s official friendship state, or something like that.

It was clearly a political move made this early.

But the surprising thing was, other kingdoms had also offered the same to Evana. And yet despite that, Evana had given Liora their priority of first visit.

Leon’s eye twitched.

’...Clearly it was not due to me. Right?’

He had a bad feeling about this.

Anise had personally given her stance to Leon, Ethan, and Cyan about what they had done for Evana.

Maybe it was because of that, they had prioritised the kingdom they were really from.

Eula did not mention who exactly would be visiting from Evana tomorrow.

And Leon heavily doubted that Anise would personally come herself.

But that did not really matter, if whoever came would surely be someone Leon knew, or someone who knew Leon.

After all, Anise had announced her stance for them publicly in the Sapphire Palace.

As he was thinking, from inside his head Rumi added.

’Aren’t you happy?’

’Me? Happy? Why? This is so sudden if you ask me.’

Evana should be focusing on establishing itself first. It was just too soon for political meetups and diplomacy.

Or well...

Knowing their defense and the three Tower Heads backing them, only a fool would dare go against them right now.

Rumi continued.

’I am pretty sure they would bring Princess Lilly. And also a few from Adler’s detective agency.’

"Oh come on."

Leon muttered aloud.

"Irene was busy. And a banquet... did you forget that she does not like banquets at all?"

Rumi replied calmly.

’I never mentioned Irene’s name here, but now that I think... you will be there. So Irene would be rather excited this time.’

"...."

She had a point.

Leon slowly raised himself up from his bed.

Knowing how Irene was.

She would be the first person to take part in this diplomacy.

’What are you going to do, Haru? It is nothing to think so much about, you know.’

Rumi added again in her calm tone.

She was right.

It was nothing to think so much about. Even so, this was making Leon feel rather impulsive.

Thanks to Eula, he was also invited now.

She had asked him to be there. I

It had rather felt like an order from her, because tomorrow, she had assigned Leon a mission alongside her own.

That by the time the banquet was happening, they would sneak into the King’s personal room for inspection.

To find out exactly what he was hiding, and what had made the King cast that spell on Leon’s mind all those years ago.
