Chapter 124: A Glimpse into Chaos
As the ordered food finally arrived, all of them walked toward the dining table and enjoyed eating. Kalos made several attempts to get close to Ava, but her expressionless face didn’t change even a little.
Ava and L just watched in silent amusement at his failed attempts. They already knew his cheap tricks were not going to affect Ava, as she was far more experienced than anyone among them.
After the dinner party was over and the food was finished, L stood up and lifted the dishes, carrying them into the kitchen to wash them.
When he went in, there wasn’t even a need for him to wash the dishes by hand. He just put them inside the dishwasher, and the cutlery and dishes were cleaned and dried automatically by the modern system.
Now that the work was done and the sun started to set outside, everyone sat on the comfortable couch in the living room.
"Mr. Kalos, don’t you have any other work? I guess a hero like you isn’t a free-wandering man without any duties to deal with. You must have a ton of work waiting for you..." Alen pointed out.
Kalos pursed his lips as he looked at Alen with clear annoyance. He wanted to stay here much longer, but seeing that it was getting late, he knew he had to go back.
"Hah. Yes, it seems I have to go back now..."
He stood up, smoothing out his tailored suit as he turned toward Ava.
"Lady Ava, I will go now. If you have any problems or need me for any work, you can call me anytime. I am always up for you—I mean, for the people of the city!"
Ava looked at him and stepped closer.
Kalos’s face warmed slightly at her sudden closeness.
Ava paused a short distance away from him and bowed slightly.
"Thank you for your help, Mr. Kalos. I will contact you if I need any help."
"Ah—yes."
He bowed slightly to her in return and walked away, a small triumph smile tugging on his lips as if he had just won a major battle.
Alen watched his back as he walked away. Once Kalos was gone, he turned his head toward L and Ava.
"It seems we are finally alone. Ava, there is something I want to discuss with you, if you are alright with it..."
Ava looked at him and nodded.
"Of course. Tell me, what is it? Do you need some help from me?"
Alen nodded and sat back. The three of them sat silently for a moment.
Alen didn’t wait any longer. He summoned ’The Grimoire of Darkness’, the item he had obtained in his third trial from the defeated boss monster.
"This is the Grimoire I got after defeating the dungeon boss in my third trial. But for some reason, it is not working. There is nothing written inside it either... I don’t know how to use it."
He handed the Grimoire to Ava to check. Since she was also a darkness user, was far more experienced than him, and possessed a special ability to see through disguises and shadows, she was the best choice. He chose to ask her because he didn’t have any other trusted people who could help him.
Ava took the Grimoire. She looked at the cover, then opened it. Inside, there was nothing but blank pages with no signs of any symbols or written letters.
L also leaned forward to look at it curiously, but he found nothing there as well.
After glancing at the Grimoire, Ava imbued her mana into it. Darkness coiled around the book as it floated just above the floor. Suddenly, a purple current of Chaos flickered around the Grimoire. It quickly negated her darkness, causing the heavy book to fall down onto the glass table.
*Thud!*
Since basic trick didn’t work, she finally used her special eyes. A bright purple light shined in her lavender eyes for a second.
[Eye of Revelation: Peer through Darkness]
As she used the skill, her vision blurred as she looked deep inside the pages.
Everything around her turned dark. There wasn’t any sight of anything existing for a long second, but then her eyes peered through that dense darkness. She looked upon a massive Field of Chaos. Purple lightning descended everywhere across the dark field, illuminating the entire space in eerie purple glows.
She watched the chaotic energy waving through the darkness. Suddenly, she felt a cold shiver run down her spine. She felt a genuine threat as her own mana started to react violently with the Chaos. The mana inside her body became highly chaotic, her control slipping away until she was forcibly pulled back to reality.
Her face still looked expressionless, but her body shivered for a second. Her mana calmed down slowly as the residue of Chaos faded away.
Both Alen and L looked at her with tense, worried expressions, having noticed her flickering eyes and sudden shiver.
"Ava. Is everything alright?" L asked carefully.
"I am alright... It just seems the Grimoire will actually not work with normal Darkness..."
"Mhmm? What do you mean? How can it not work on darkness?" Alen asked.
She gazed at the dark book one last time before looking at him to answer.
"It seems it relies on a unique element called ’Chaos’, which is a higher form of elemental energy. It is even more potent and untamed than pure darkness."
Alen looked at her and nodded in understanding.
"Yeah... I remember now, the dungeon boss was also emitting a similar kind of power. So it means the Grimoire will only work for a being who possesses the Chaos element?"
Ava nodded.
"Yes, that is most likely the case. Even I felt repulsed by the energy. Since Chaos is a higher form of Darkness, it has attained some volatile properties of other elements along with it, which makes normal darkness repulse it."
Alen nodded as he looked at the Grimoire. He summoned it back into his Shadow Inventory.
"Sigh... It seems it is useless to me until I get the Chaos element..."
Ava nodded.
"Well... There were only a few people in my time who wielded the Chaos element, but they had to use forbidden methods to gain it... It is best not to choose such methods, as it will make you sacrifice some of your other skills."
"You are already more talented, so you shouldn’t just focus on obtaining it."
Alen nodded, fully agreeing with her words. He was not going to use some shady, forbidden methods to gain power. He had gained every bit of his power through struggle and survival, with his own sweat and blood.
Forbidden methods might require him to sacrifice his hard-earned power and might even corrupt his mind and body.
He didn’t want that to happen. He knew he could become stronger using other valid methods rather than choosing the wrong path.
