Chapter 122: Foiling the Plan
The morning sun dawned over Vale City, and the lingering moisture from last night’s heavy rain had vanished completely.
As the birds started to chirp while resting on the wet tree branches lining the streets, crowds of people swarmed the sidewalks. Various vehicles continued to be seen traveling back and forth along the busy roads. At the corner intersections, locals walked to nearby shops or transit stations, as not everyone used vehicles for short-distance travel.
A sleek, black, stylish car passed at a normal speed along the road. Just by looking at its unique design and model, anyone could tell that it was one of the most expensive cars available on the market.
Inside the vehicle, a man with neat brown hair and obsidian eyes, wearing a tailored suit, was driving the car.
Kalos wore a tightly controlled smile while driving, trying his absolute best to hold back his rising annoyance. He cast a sideways glance at the silver-haired boy sitting in the passenger seat. Alen sat there calmly, casually drinking boxed juice through a straw while gazing out the front window without a care in the world.
Kalos’s eyes then shifted up to the rearview mirror. He could see the beautiful purple-haired girl sitting in the back seat. She had her legs crossed and was looking out the car window at the passing street with a completely expressionless gaze.
As he stared at her reflection continuously, he suddenly felt a freezing cold shiver run down his spine. His gaze shifted slightly in the mirror to the boy sitting right beside her. L, wearing the black cloak, was glaring back at him through the mirror with a deadly cold gaze.
Kalos quickly turned his focus back to the road ahead.
’Damn these f*cking kids. Can’t they understand how to give some basic privacy to adults? Why the f*ck are they even tagging along? And even if they are, they should at least let her sit in the front seat with me...’
’Ahem! Whatever. I just have to recommend a good residence for Miss Ava. It will be nice to have someone as beautiful as her living in this city. I might also buy a nearby residence around her property to become her close neighbor. Hehe...’
As he continued to drive the luxury car down the bustling street, Alen, who sat right beside him, could easily read his shifting facial expressions. The man was far too easy to read with that scummy face of his.
’Hehe... It seems he is definitely planning something sneaky. But alas, I will not let you succeed in your so-called plan. I will definitely make you pay back tenfold because of yesterday’s ambush incident. Don’t take me lightly; I hate owing anyone a grudge.’ Alen thought, a smirk playing on his lips.
"So, Mr. Kalos, which specific residence are you talking about? Can you tell us a bit about it so that we can judge if it is suitable or not?..."
Kalos turned toward Alen while forcing his polite smile to stay in place.
’Damn this kid. Does he even know how a mansion operates? Shitty kid...’
"Oh, well, it is a luxury two-story mansion. It is visually beautiful and has a good garden and a large swimming pool, with every modern facility available, along with a spacious roof... It will be perfect for the beautiful—I mean, for Miss Ava..."
Both Ava’s and L’s attention shifted to the front as they listened to the description of the mansion.
Alen smiled knowingly at his vague answer.
"Oh? Exactly how big is the mansion? How many bedrooms are there? What is the exact square footage of the bedrooms and the main hall? What other unique facilities exist inside it, excluding the normal ones? Who is its past owner? How long has the mansion been up for sale? What are the specific reasons behind the owner selling it? What is the neighborhood community like? What is the crime rate in that specific area? What are the nearest amenities, such as hospitals, markets, and transportation links? Is it a freehold or leasehold property? What are the annual property taxes and monthly utility costs? What is the natural light like throughout the day? Are there any major structural or maintenance issues we should be aware of? What are the covenants, conditions, and restrictions of the property? Does it have good internet and strong mobile network coverage?"
Alen bombarded Kalos with a rapid barrage of questions. His smile remained unwavering, but his eyes held a sharp glint of challenge.
Kalos’s lips twitched violently at the overwhelming list of questions, but he still tried to reply calmly.
"Oh, it seems you are quite knowledgeable about property dealing. I didn’t expect a kid like you to know about such complex things..."
Alen replied smoothly.
"Of course. It is basic knowledge for running a successful business. I have a little bit of experience with it..."
"Oh, that is great. The property I am going to show you is a leasehold, but I can try to convince the landlord to increase the time period for as long as you prefer..."
Alen tilted his head and answered firmly.
"No, a leasehold property is not preferable at all. Ava wants to live in a property where she can reside without any future burdens. What if the landlord creates some problem afterwards or tries to evict her? It will be a massive headache."
"Oh, don’t worry about that. I will not let any problems come to her. You don’t have to—"
"Sir Kalos, I also prefer not staying in a leasehold property. I do not want any unwanted trouble hanging over my head," Ava interrupted calmly.
Kalos’s eyes widened at Ava’s direct comment. He straightened his back against the seat and replied politely.
"Oh, Miss Ava, if that is your final decision, then I will show you some other places where you can actually buy the entire property outright..."
’Shit! That was the nearest residence to my own home, but that bastard kid just made another problem for me! Now where should I suggest she look? There are barely any good houses for sale in the inner circle of Vale City, as no owner prefers to sell them.’
He then turned the steering wheel, driving the car in a completely different direction.
"Oh, there is a small mansion available, but it is quite a bit farther from the city center. However, it has a beautiful site, as there is a small, clear river flowing right behind the property line..."
Ava looked curious at the description and nodded.
"Okay, guide us there..."
As he drove the car, the bustling city streets passed by. They drove out of the crowded society districts and headed into the distant outskirts.
Kalos quietly messaged the owner of the house on his device, telling him that he was bringing some important guests and asking him to be fully prepared.
’Haha, even if it is a bit far, this is actually better. Away from the prying eyes of the city, I could come visit her without anyone noticing. Hehe... It is an even better plan than before...’
As they turned onto a rather secluded road, the surrounding environment became noticeably quieter. Tall trees lined the paved path, their green branches intertwining overhead to create a natural canopy that dappled the afternoon sunlight. The air grew much fresher, carrying the pleasant scent of damp earth and distant floral blooms.
Kalos, though internally frustrated with the boys, maintained his composed smile. He occasionally glanced at Ava in the rearview mirror, trying to gauge her reaction to the changing landscape.
After a short while of quiet traveling, they could see a tall mansion from the road. It looked noticeably beautiful without exploiting extreme luxury; it looked fresh and welcoming.
Kalos turned the car to enter the mansion’s main gate. The security guards stationed at the gate quickly pushed the doors open while bowing respectfully as the car entered.
As they traveled the short distance up the driveway, large gardens could be seen on both sides of the path. Various kinds of beautiful, vibrant flowers and exotic plants highlighted the natural beauty of the mansion.
As they continued to drive, a small fountain featuring a goddess statue could be seen in the center of a circular roundabout, separating the driveway before meeting again into a straight path.
They passed through the roundabout and entered the main entryway of the mansion. Kalos parked the car right before the front doors, under a large architectural ceiling that covered the driveway to protect arriving guests from the weather.
They all stepped out of the vehicle.
"Wow, it seems your taste is not as bad as I had expected..." Alen commented, looking around.
Kalos’s lips twitched at the remark, unable to understand if the boy had just complimented him or insulted him again.
Both L and Ava also stepped out of the back seats, looking at the grand outer architecture of the mansion.
"Miss Ava, do you like the mansion?..." Kalos asked eagerly.
L folded his arms across his chest and replied to the question instead.
"Let us actually see the inside first. Why are you so eager for her to like it immediately?..."
Kalos forced a light laugh.
"Oh, it is just that I firmly believe this property suits Miss Ava’s exquisite taste perfectly..."
"Well, that is Ava’s decision to make, not yours!" L shot back.
"Oh—okay... I apologize..."
Kalos smiled awkwardly while violently cursing internally.
’Ughh! I am definitely going to murder someone today!!!’
As they stood near the car, a middle-aged man wearing a luxurious tailored suit and silver spectacles walked out of the mansion’s front doors. He wore a wide, welcoming smile on his face.
"Oh, I didn’t expect the guests to arrive this early..."
"It is a profound honor to meet the ’Hero’ of Vale City..."
The man bowed slightly while pressing a hand over his chest. As he straightened up, his eyes turned toward the two boys and the beautiful young lady. For a long second, he just stopped talking and openly stared at her striking face.
Kalos immediately noticed the man’s lingering gaze. He released a slight, concentrated pulse of killing intent directed right at him, all while wearing a smile that didn’t reach his cold eyes.
"Mr. Howard, I think you should focus on your real estate business if you want to make a good impression on my distinguished guests."
Mr. Howard quickly retracted his stare. A cold bead of sweat trickled down his temple as he felt the massive amount of killing intent solely focused on him.
"My deepest apologies, Mr. Kalos. I was merely admiring the unique beauty of your esteemed companions. Welcome, welcome to my humble abode. Please, come inside. I have prepared some warm refreshments for you all."
He gestured grandly toward the open entrance of the mansion, desperately trying to salvage the tense situation.
"Of course, Mr. Howard..." Kalos replied smoothly.
Kalos gestured for his companions to walk inside the mansion first. As the trio walked toward the open doors, Kalos stepped closer to Howard. His cold, obsidian eyes bore into the man’s soul as he whispered maliciously.
"Be very careful, Howard. If I see you looking at her like that again, I will gouge your eyes right out of your sockets!"
Mr. Howard nodded frantically, trying hard to hold back from stumbling backward in terror.
"O-of course, sir. I will be careful..."
As Kalos turned his eyes back toward the trio walking ahead, he plastered his charming, heroic smile back onto his face. He started to walk forward again, following them inside the grand mansion.
