Chapter 115: The Sudden Ambush

As Alen was slumped on the hard ground while watching the interface fade away, he let out a long breath. He tried to stand up, but he suddenly paused upon seeing a hand reaching out, offering to help him to his feet.

He looked up at L, accepted the hand, and pulled himself up.

’It seems that guy isn’t as bad as I initially thought. If we separate his weird behavior, he is actually nice... No, but he is still a little bit annoying sometimes...’

Alen stretched his tired body and hands, feeling much better than before.

He then looked over at Ravena, who had just finished eating her pink cotton candy. A small, cunning smirk tugged on his lips as he thought of something mischievous. He started walking directly toward her.

’Hehe... You are going to regret acting all happy while watching my struggle, you little girl...’

Ravena caught his facial expression as she saw him coming near her. He wore that specific lunatic smile, which she absolutely hated. Her small body stiffened as he came closer and sat down right beside her on the bench.

"What is it?... What do you want from me..."

Alen smiled, ignored her suspicious questions, and patted her head lightly.

Ravena sat stiffly as his hand started to pat her soft hair. She involuntarily leaned into his warm touch, even though she claimed to hate him.

’What is that bastard planning now? He is definitely acting suspiciously. Or did he find out that I was the one who asked Lyris to beat him up? No, that couldn’t be happening, right?...’

She felt utterly confused and formed a frown on her cute face.

"Hey! What are you doing? Get your hands away from me, you disgusting bastard!..."

"Do you know, Ravena? I was originally planning to let you roam around the city all by yourself... But now I understand my true feelings. I missed you so much that I feel so lonely without you babbling beside me. So, from now on, I want you to stay right beside me..."

She glared at him. Her face flushed bright red at the mention of ’missing you’. She looked deeply into his eyes, searching his face for any sign of a truth or a lie, but she couldn’t read his blank expression at all.

"Wait—what? Are you telling the truth?... Do you really miss me?..." she asked curiously.

She had already fallen into his trap and believed his sweet words.

Alen smiled gently, pulled her onto his lap, and patted her head again.

"Of course~ I guess, yes, I really missed you. So stay beside me..."

Ravena paused, looking at his warm smile, and her defensive expression softened. She whispered softly in reply.

"Okay..."

Alen smiled a wicked smile. He suddenly summoned his dagger and tapped the flat blade lightly on her head. The dense Crimson Essence surged forward and started to absorb her physical form back into the weapon.

"Hehe... So stay inside here, my dear weapon."

"Wait—what?! Hey, don’t do that, I—!"

Before she could continue her sentence, her form dissolved completely in crimson light. She absorbed back inside the weapon, making the power of the dagger complete once again. The Crimson Essence started to flow around the blade without much effort, pulsing with energy.

[Hey you bastard, let me come out! Don’t cage me in here!]

"Nope, you are going to stay in there for another two whole days as a punishment for laughing at your master, my sweet weapon."

[You bastard, I am going to kill you!]

As Alen was busy bickering with Ravena and trapping her inside the blade, L watched them from a short distance while shaking his head in amusement.

"Well... like master, like his spirit. Both of them are exactly the same..."

L started to walk toward Alen, wanting to request him to refrain from caging Ravena for too long.

Suddenly, he felt a sharp chill run down his spine. His combat instincts flared, and he quickly backed away.

*BOOOM!*

The ground beneath where he just stood blasted open. Heavy debris flew away as a massive spike made up of Earth magic shot from the earth, appearing suddenly out of nowhere.

L dodged the initial attack, but more of such lethal spikes suddenly started to appear, grazing his clothing. He didn’t have the time to consider the situation, so he used his movement skill to escape the constant assault.

[Bloom Step!]

Suddenly, an earth spike formed right beside him and launched from the ground with incredible speed. It pierced straight through his body.

But there was no blood leaking from the wound. His physical body started to disintegrate into purple flowers made of his mana. The petals fell harmlessly onto the ground, while the real L appeared a few steps away, closer to Alen. Alen also stood up, holding his dagger, looking around for any sign of where the attack had landed from.

"Who are you? Are you cowards attacking behind my back? Come out!"

As L’s loud voice reverberated through the empty park area, several figures suddenly came out from their hidden positions. They all appeared in a fast blur of motion.

L’s face stiffened as he looked at the intruders. All of them wore the exact same type of clothes: a crisp black blazer over a white shirt and black pants, paired with dark black goggles. They looked exactly like the professional bodyguards of someone important.

"Who are they? Do you know them?..." Alen asked, feeling highly confused at the sudden emergence of these unwanted people.

L shook his head and answered firmly.

"I don’t know, it is the first time I have ever met them. Why would they even attack me out of nowhere?..."

Alen suddenly remembered a crucial detail and asked.

"Could they be related to Ava? And by the way, where is Ava anyway?..."

"I don’t know if they are related to her or not... And I got separated from Ava after we were done eating lunch in the restaurant. She told me she had some personal work to take care of, and she said she would come back here after she was done with it..."

Alen paused as he looked at the growing crowd. More figures started to appear, not only from the front but from the other sides of the park as well.

"Are you sure she can be trusted? I shouldn’t be saying this, but what if she betrayed us and sent her former colleagues to ambush us?..."

L paused, glanced toward him, and said firmly.

"No, there is no way she would betray us... Why would she betray us? If she just had to take care of us, shut our mouths, or kill us, she could have done it herself already. But she didn’t seek to kill us. And instead, we also helped her leave that trial... I won’t believe she will ever betray us..."

Alen didn’t reply. He just nodded and looked at the several enemies stepping into the light.

There were probably fifty to a hundred enemies surrounding them from all sides. Alen looked behind them. Even in the tops of the large trees and along the boundary walls, men in suits surrounded them, cutting off any escape routes.

"They all look incredibly strong. Most of them are at least B-rank... And there are also some A-rank fighters mixed in..." Alen noted.

"Hey... Little boy with the cloaked figure, are you the one who offended our boss?..."

A young man sitting calmly on a tree branch muttered the question while looking down at L with a piercing gaze.

L felt a chilling pressure run down his spine. He knew exactly what that oppressive feeling was.

"That specific figure has at least 1-Star... He is not just a Awakener, he is a Walker... Which means he is a man who has successfully reached the second stage in the Ascension Realm..." L muttered under his breath as his expression turned grim.

An Awakener with a Star and one without a Star made a massive difference on the battlefield. As a person gained the ’Star’, their body and soul gained a massive boost in power. Their overall skills became much stronger, even if their base level remained the same as the others.

But that was not all. With each Star, they acquired a unique innate ability or some kind of special power, which created a massive difference in actual combat prowess.

That is why a person who possessed a Star was fundamentally, and in all aspects of strength, way stronger than a normal Awakener.

As L looked at the Walker with a cautious expression, the man smiled back down at him. He jumped from the tall tree, landing directly beside them and making both Alen and L scramble a few steps away in defense. But because the massive crowd of men in black suits was fully surrounding them, there was no place left to run away.

"Hehe... You will pay the price for disrespecting our boss..."
