Chapter 114: The Duel Again, L Vs Alen!
L and Alen stood a short distance away from each other, letting a tense silence stretch between them for a while.
Suddenly, Alen dashed forward with incredible speed. In just a few seconds, he crossed the open distance separating them and swung his dagger in a wide horizontal slash. At the same time, he shifted his back leg backward to create a secure spot for retreating.
L reacted instantly, swinging his own dagger with incredible speed and precisely meeting the attack with a sharp downward slash.
*CLANG!*
The two daggers met, and bright sparks flew from the heavy clash. Alen’s horizontal strike was parried with surprising force, his forward momentum momentarily checked. The sharp impact reverberated all the way up his arm, acting as a clear testament to L’s unexpected strength and precise combat skill.
L didn’t pause for a single second after parrying the attack. He brought his empty fist forward swiftly. Without giving Alen the time to defend himself, he punched his chest with solid force.
*Wham!*
The fist squarely hit his chest, pushing Alen a few meters backward across the ground.
He clutched his chest, wincing through the pain.
"Ouch! That hurts..."
But he didn’t get the time to dwell on the pain, as L moved again, swinging his dagger aggressively.
Alen, still reeling, barely managed to dodge the new assault, the sharp blade whistling past the exact spot where his head had been moments before. He scrambled backward, trying to regain his footing and create some much-needed distance. However, L was relentless, pressing his advantage with calculated aggression.
Each swing of L’s dagger was a dangerous blur of steel, forcing Alen into a defensive crouch. Alen parried frantically with his own weapon, the earlier pain in his chest momentarily forgotten in the face of the renewed onslaught. He knew he had to find an opening, a brief moment to counter, or this fight would be over much sooner than he liked.
*CLANG!* *CLANG!*
As their daggers continued to clash against each other, sparks flew through the air.
Sitting on the rusted bench behind them, Ravena watched the show. She happily ate her pink cotton candy, swinging her tiny legs back and forth as she waited for something exciting to happen.
L forced Alen to take a defensive stance once again. He swung his dagger vertically while simultaneously using his free hand to punch Alen squarely in the stomach, dividing his attention.
*CLANG!*
But to L’s surprise, the fist was blocked by Alen’s own punch easily.
"Do you think the exact same trick will work on me again and again?" Alen challenged.
But to Alen’s shock, L wasn’t done yet. He twisted his body fluidly, dropped his dagger in mid-air for a split second, and punched Alen hard in the chest.
*BOOM!*
L caught his falling dagger from the air, slashed forward, and kicked Alen directly in the knee. Increasing his speed, L appeared directly behind Alen’s back and slapped the back of his head.
"Ouch! That hurts..." Alen groaned, trying to defend his blind spots again.
But as Alen turned around, L had already appeared in front of his body and kicked him firmly in the stomach.
Alen tried his best to dodge, but L was always thinking three steps ahead of him, beating him physically while distracting his eyes with the gleaming dagger.
A flurry of fast punches and kicks flew toward Alen. He tried to evade, and his bodily movements gradually became more fluid, but the rapid attacks still landed on his skin.
As a few more minutes passed, Alen kept getting beaten back. For some reason, he felt a weird conflict, unsure if he was getting properly taught or just getting beaten up for fun.
His gaze suddenly caught the gleaming, excited eyes of the little child sitting on the bench.
For some reason, he felt like she was the hidden reason behind this brutal beatdown, but he remained too busy dodging L’s attacks to voice his complaints.
As the sparring match continued, Alen gradually got used to wielding the dagger and defending himself properly.
’It seems the dagger is not just used for speed. We have to remain swift, precisely hit the weak spots, and constantly switch to different tactics,’ Alen analyzed in his mind.
’Since not all enemies will be the same, the combat tactics should be changed according to the specific opponent. The primary thing I have to improve is aligning my body movement with my slash and expressing my will through the weapon. If I remain solely focused on either the enemy or just the dagger, I will still remain one step behind the opponent.’
Alen ducked under an incoming stroke of the dagger, keeping his eyes on L’s fluid swings.
’It seems he is instinctively swinging the dagger. That means he has practiced for enough time that he doesn’t even need to focus on the weapon itself, which easily lets him focus on my movements.... I have to hone my skill so that my instincts with this weapon are fully developed.’
While Alen was busy thinking about improving himself during the dodges, L was thinking completely different things in his own mind.
’He is improving at a very fast rate. At this pace, he will even learn how to switch from defensive to attack mode smoothly... His footwork has also become fluid and clean... Hehe, it seems my first student is learning quite fast. I am proud of myself...’
L looked at Alen’s tired, bruised face.
’It seems I hit him quite hard. Even if I held back my true strength, it still hurts him.’
L cast a quick glance at Ravena, who wore an incredibly excited and happy expression on her face.
’Mhmm... is she really ’his’ bonded spirit? Why does she feel so happy while her master is getting beaten up? Sigh... Sorry, Alen, I had to do this in order to prevent my true identity from getting exposed...’
’But let’s end this spar now. I think he has learned enough for today.’
With a fluid motion, L swiftly moved to slash the air in front of Alen. Alen, who had taken a solid defensive stance, swung his own blade with all his remaining strength to parry. But suddenly, instead of defending himself, Alen stepped aside. He let L’s swing slash through the empty air and swung his dagger directly toward L’s neck.
L twisted his body swiftly, pushing off his front leg to retreat. As Alen’s sword slashed downward, L quickly came forward and placed his own dagger directly against Alen’s throat.
"Hah... hah.... You are better than I thought..."
L muttered genuinely. He didn’t even think Alen would suddenly switch to a offensive maneuver.
As the cold dagger rested against Alen’s throat, L safely pulled it back.
Alen let out a heavy sigh of relief and slumped onto the ground, feeling immense exhaustion wash over his body.
"Sigh... I feel completely drained... but it was fun."
He slumped his head back against the hard ground of the park, staring up at the sky.
