Chapter 105: Darkness Erasure

As the system notification suddenly rang inside Alen’s brain, he remained silent and composed. He didn’t even glance at the interface hovering in his vision.

He looked at Ava and asked curiously.

"Wait a minute, you just said ’Expert’ instead of ’Awakener’. Why is that? Did you misword it?"

Ava blinked as she stared at him. Her facial expression was blank, but there was a distinct hint of confusion in her gaze.

L also wore the exact same expression and frown.

"Stop joking around... Do you not know such a simple things?"

As Alen still wore a clueless expression on his face, L looked at him in shock.

"Wait, seriously, do you really not know about that? It is one of the basic things that are taught in any Academy... Did you ever go to the Academy?" L asked curiously, still staring at Alen’s oblivious face.

Alen shook his head and replied calmly.

"Nope, I never went to the Academy..."

Alen told him the simple truth. There was no point in lying to L since he was genuinely clueless about everything regarding this world. At least he would get some valuable information about the universe through him if he accepted his ignorance with honesty.

L crossed his arms over his chest.

"Of course you haven’t. That explains why you are so clueless about everything..."

"Okay, I will tell you about it, so listen carefully..." L instructed.

"There are two ranking systems that exist in the universe. The first is the basic ranking system, which is usually considered from the real world’s point of view. That ranges from F-rank all the way to SSS-rank."

"Then, there is a second ranking system used separately for stage completion, operating according to the rules of the Ascension Realm..."

"As you may or may not know, after completing a stage, we get a ’rune’, commonly referred to as a ’Star’. This grants us unknown power based on its specific color, and that power makes you more than just a simple Awakener. With each Star you get, your body and soul become stronger. They break through their previous limits and awaken into the next level."

...

[RANKING SYSTEM]

1) Awakener

2) Walker

3) PathSeeker

4) Expert

5) Advanced

6) Master

7) Sage

8) Divine

9) Primordial

10) Transcendent

...

"So, after you get one Star by completing the first stage, you will no longer be just an ’Awakener’. You will become a ’Walker’, which means you have started to walk on your designated path for real..."

"And when she spoke about the ’Expert’ class, it means that the Awakener had reached the Expert level after conquering the fourth stage of the Ascension Realm and currently holds three Stars."

"Basically, normal people mostly mention anyone stronger than them as an Awakener. But those who reach that specific level, or a nearby level, call themselves and others by that proper rank. It shows respect to someone who actually reached that stage."

Alen nodded slowly as he processed the information L gave him. He felt like he really needed to visit a library after reaching Stage 2 of the Ascension Realm. He was far too clueless about everything going on around him.

L then looked at both of them and spoke with urgency.

"Let’s focus on completing the trial. There are only 20 minutes left on the timer. If we aren’t able to complete it by then, we will be stuck here forever just like her..."

Alen agreed. He looked around the ruined streets, but he still couldn’t find a single clue about the ghost’s existence.

"Yes, we have to find that ghost. But where are we going to find it?" Alen asked.

Ava looked at them and tilted her head.

"If you mean the ghost, are they the ones who are flying all around the sky in millions of fragments?"

Both Alen and L looked confused as they watched Ava stare up at the dark sky. To their eyes, nothing existed up there. Only the thick, dark clouds could be found, except for the small patch where the starlight had fallen earlier from L’s spell.

"Yeah... They are constantly moving around the atmosphere... Like a ghost..." Ava noted.

Both boys stiffened. They looked at the sky carefully, but there was still nothing except the dark clouds to be seen.

"Are you talking about the clouds? But those are just dark storm clouds. They can’t be the ghost... Right?" Alen looked unsure if her theory was actually true or not.

Ava remained silent for a second. She replied while keeping her gaze fixed on the dark sky above.

"I have a ’special’ vision that lets me see through invisible facades..."

She glanced at L for a second longer than necessary.

L stiffened, noticing her looking at him with a knowing look. He had already felt that she had seen through his disguise earlier. But now it completely proves that fact. He just hoped she wouldn’t reveal his secret. At least, not yet.

Ava turned her lavender eyes back toward Alen and said, "I can see that those are not storm clouds. Not actually. Those are millions of fragments of darkness lurking around everywhere in the sky, stretching across the whole realm..."

Alen blinked at her answer as he looked up at the vast sky, which spanned kilometers in every direction. He felt a wave of dizziness, unable to comprehend such a complex trial.

L also wore the exact same expression. He quickly summoned the compass artifact from earlier. He looked at the needle, which was malfunctioning and rotating continuously without stopping. This proved her words: there was not just one ghost. There were millions of fragments, and all of them were hovering directly above them.

"Why did such a trial even appear at Stage 1? It is impossible with our current strength to eliminate that amount of fragments, if it is true as you say..." L muttered.

Ava nodded in agreement.

"Yeah, it was impossible for you two to wipe out that large amount of fragments in your current state... It seems the trial forcibly evolved due to my presence here..."

"Then what should we do? We can’t just erase the whole sky, and there is barely any time left. We have to definitely do something ASAP..." Alen warned.

Suddenly, both of their gazes fell on Ava. She raised her pale hand toward the sky and muttered complex words under her breath.

A dark, intricate spell formed in the air in front of her. She forced her mana into the construct, and the spell split up into several complex, overlapping circles. She finalized the cast.

[Goddess of Darkness’s Decree: Darkness Erasure!]

Suddenly, all the separated circles combined into one. A massive circular formation with several intricate layers glowed brightly. As the spell took its final shape, she cast it forward. A single, giant diamond-shaped structure made up of pure darkness released from the formation and floated vertically straight toward the sky.

As the magical diamond reached the clouds, the dark mass in the sky started to pull toward the shape. It was swallowed inside the diamond as if the spell was a massive vacuum created to suck everything inside.

The entire layer of dark clouds started to tear away and pull toward the spell. The millions of fragments of the ghost were violently swallowed inside the spell.

Slowly, the sky started to clear up. All the hovering darkness was swallowed inside the diamond, and the spell slowly started to float back down toward Ava.

She opened her palm. The spell floated just above her hand, and as she slowly closed her fingers into a fist, the diamond started to shrink. It shrank smaller and smaller until it disappeared into thin air.

As the spell was destroyed, the whole ruined city became much quieter.

Alen looked up at the clean, vibrant sky. The bright rays of the sun fell over them, illuminating the whole realm and erasing the remaining shadows.

[Ding! The Trial ’Kill the Ghost of the Dark Temple’ has been successfully completed!]
