Chapter 102: Tears of the Goddess
In the clearing, which only a few seconds ago was filled with dead bodies and corrupted children, now only the residue of the broken ground and shattered debris could be seen.
The air felt heavy, and the lingering residue of the massive spell still remained. In the exact center of the destruction, the dark stone altar holding the statue of the Goddess stood perfectly intact, as if the Starlight could not break it. Everything else around the opening had evaporated, leaving the clearing bathed in shadows.
L appeared again on the solid ground, dropping Alen onto his own feet.
Alen was completely in a daze, standing motionless after the intense shock of the attack.
"Hey, are you okay? Hey, wake up..."
Alen remained still and motionless, as he didn’t hear the words. L looked at him and slapped the back of his head.
*Smack!*
"Ouch!..."
Alen finally snapped out of his daze. He clutched the back of his head and looked around. He looked completely shocked after seeing the broken field. Just a second ago, it was teeming with children and disgusting dead bodies.
"Hey, what happened? Why is everything here destroyed?..."
L just stood calmly, gazing around the perimeter, trying to find if any more corrupted children were left hiding in the ruins.
"You have been slacking off for quite a time now. So wake up and stand up. We don’t have much time. Less than an hour remains now, and we didn’t even find the ghost yet..."
As L spoke, he walked forward toward the stone altar. It was unusually fine, even after he had used such a large, destructive spell.
"Why is this stone statue still alright even after the attack?"
L raised his hand to touch the smooth stone of the statue. Suddenly, a thick drop of black liquid seemed to drop directly onto L’s hand. His skin started to burn, hissing as if the liquid was a potent acid.
L quickly backed away. He summoned a healing potion from his storage ring and spilled the glowing liquid onto his hand, as the burning poison was actively spreading across his skin. As the healing potion poured over the burn, the poison started to reduce until it disappeared entirely. L sighed, looking back at the altar, which continued to drip those dark droplets.
He looked up toward the statue’s face. His eyes stared at her carved features. The statue started to spill the black liquid from its stone eyes, making it look exactly like the Goddess was weeping dark tears. Her posture was the same; the only difference was the dropping liquid pooling below her.
As the seconds passed, those heavy droplets started to fall rapidly. They splashed onto the altar and dripped down onto the ruined ground. L backed away immediately as he watched the stone statue show the first signs of a crack.
"Hey, back off. Something is off with that statue..."
Alen stared at the crumbling statue. He channeled his mana, preparing for any unknown attack. Even L took a combat stance, ready for whatever the situation was going to turn into.
As they waited impatiently, the cracks on the statue started to increase. From the top of the head, the fractures started to expand downward.
Slowly, chunks of the outer stone started to fall onto the ground. What revealed itself from the empty gaps in the stone was pure darkness.
As more parts of the stone fell away, the darkness shifted, revealing pale white skin hidden beneath the rocky shell.
As the remaining chunks continued to fall, the pale white skin behind the stone parts was fully revealed.
A woman with long purple hair and a beautifully sculpted face emerged from the shell. Her skin and figure were sculpted flawlessly. Her face had a soft tone, marked with a distinct beauty mark beneath her left eye. She looked like a literal goddess with her beauty. Her limp body started to fall forward, tumbling from the top of the altar toward the hard ground.
L looked at her and burst forward from his spot. He quickly caught her fragile frame before she could crash onto the ground. He swiftly walked out of the danger zone before his shoes could burn from the pools of dark liquid.
He placed her form gently on a safe patch of ground and summoned a large cloak to cover her naked body.
Alen also walked over. He looked at the beautiful woman lying on the ground. She was completely unconscious.
"Who is she? Could she be the ghost of this trial?" Alen asked.
L stared at the sleeping woman. He tried to imbue his silver light inside her body—not to hurt her, but to check if he could see any sign of corruption in her soul. As he checked her internal energy, he found no sign of corruption or darkness residue that could prove her to be a ghost. Her physical form was also perfect, which decreased the chances of her being a phantom.
He leaned down toward her chest, trying to feel her heartbeat to check if she was alive or dead.
*Lub-Dub* *Lub-Dub*
As he checked, he could feel her steady heartbeat against his palm. It meant she was still alive, if barely.
"She is alive..." L confirmed.
L placed the back of his hand on her forehead to check her body temperature.
After checking her, L felt a heavy gaze resting on him. He looked up to see Alen staring at him with a blank face.
"Pervert..."
Alen looked away after muttering that single word.
L looked blankly at him in confusion. It took a few seconds for him to understand what Alen meant. Once he realized he was disguised as a teenage boy touching a naked woman’s chest, his cheeks turned bright red.
"Hey! I am not a pervert!"
Alen ignored his frantic words.
"Hey, I am telling you the truth, I am not a pervert! I just... I was just.... Ughh... Nothing."
’Sigh... I can’t tell him I am a girl too, ughh! Why did this happen now? Now he will think I am a total weirdo!’
As Lyris—or in the current situation, L—worried about what Alen might think about him, he suddenly sensed movement from the woman’s resting body.
