Chapter 460: Bonus Chapter 50: Death vs Death: Mission Complete
"Haha, consequences, you say?" Severia laughed heartily, her face flushed with a strange excitement. "If there were not any consequences, I may have wiped out a civilization as well. The power and fear inspiration, the absolute control... it would have been magnificent. Sir Benjam—I mean, Benjamin, what are you exactly? A spirit? Some kind of divine messenger?"
"No... I’m something called an... Immortal now," he answered, his gaze drifting upward toward the sky again. "I used to be a demi-god until some months ago when something very tragic happened that changed my nature completely. I’m even surprised I can stay male this long. I lost my gender as well in the transition... among other things."
[An Immortal...? No wonder the soul saber did not do you any harm] Severia voiced for a second before speaking, her mind racing to process the revelation that had just been dropped on her.
The pieces were finally clicking into place, the unbelievable survival making sense.
She had faced many opponents in her long and bloody career, had fought beings of considerable power and ancient lineage, but never had she encountered someone who could simply ignore the soul-severing properties of her most lethal weapon. Even if they were spiritual entities.
She began; "Immortals are soul bodies just wearing flesh, animated by a spirit that cannot be permanently separated from its vessel no matter how much damage is inflicted upon the physical form.
"It is fundamentally different from a mortal that can simply return to the vessel of life after a temporary death through regenerative abilities or resurrection magic. You’re practically dead already, aren’t you? You’re a spirit that has simply refused to move on, that has anchored itself to this world through sheer willpower and divine nature."
"Ah, you’re well informed about these esoteric matters, I’m impressed," Benjamin nodded, a faint blush coloring his cheeks at having his nature so accurately dissected. "Yes, I’m not alive in the way people would normally think or understand. And I’m not stopping until I become a bona fide god! That’s my goal."
"Ahhh, what an amazing and ambitious desire...!" Severia replied cheerfully, a strange warmth spreading through her chest at his declaration despite the cold reality of her situation.
Blood seeped from the corner of her lips, a thin red line that traced down her chin and dripped onto her dark attire, but she seemed almost oblivious to it, her attention fixed entirely on the man before her.
She added: "Maybe if I had more bigger goals, something to strive for beyond the next contract and the next payment, I would have walked a more different path through life? Perhaps I could have been something other than what I became, something more than just a weapon pointed at whoever paid the most. Maybe a god. Haha... I’m exhausted."
Benjamin laughed and held her shoulder so she wouldn’t collapse, his grip steady and supportive, his warmth seeping through her clothing and into her cooling skin.
"Ahaha, hold up! A Severia looking to become a god is a cosmic crisis waiting to happen, the kind of thing that keeps other gods awake. You’d have to be immensely intelligent and careful to hide from the likes of Renard and Violette. They hate world enders with a burning passion, and they would not hesitate to eliminate any threat that could potentially unravel the fabric of existence itself."
Severia shivered a little, then looked down at the silver blade that had suddenly appeared at some point in their conversation, its edge gleaming in the moonlight with a mocking brightness.
There it was, somehow buried in her chest, the same kind of precise strike she had delivered to countless victims over her long and bloody career.
Then she looked back up to Benjamin, her vision narrowing as the edges began to darken and tunnel.
"You were right about it happening in stages," She whispered, "but I felt the coldness of the blade first, then the sharp pain following immediately after. Now I’m seeing the edges of my vision darkening and closing in, the world narrowing to a single point of light... Hehe... I’m dying, aren’t I?"
"Yeah, dying sucks. Even if you can simply resurrect later, dying still sucks in the moment," Benjamin then hugs her, pulling her close against his chest in an embrace that was startlingly warm given everything that had happened between them. "But you did well. If I had met you quite earlier in your life, before all the killing and the bloodshed, I would have pulled your cheeks and spanked your ass for being such a troublesome child. I would have made sure you didn’t end up this way, trapped in a cycle of violence that you couldn’t escape from, that consumed you so much."
"...Consequen...ces... This is... all consequences..." Severia whispered in Benjamin’s ear, her voice growing weaker with each passing second, each word taking more effort than the last. "I wanted to still kill a whole lot more before I die, but..."
"No can do," Benjamin tightened his arms on her neck warmly, his embrace offering a comfort she had never known in her entire life, a warmth that she had never allowed herself to experience either. "Enough already. You’ve taken enough lives to fill several graveyards, to populate entire cities with the dead. Go meet your parents in the spirit world. Maybe Elyndor will allow you guys to frolick around a bit before total cleansing. Maybe you’ll find some peace there that you never found here... maybe."
"...I also... would have loved to meet you earlier... Benjamin..." Severia was now no longer seeing anything, her vision completely gone, replaced by an endless void of darkness.
Her breathing was nearly stopped, each breath a shallow, rattling gasp that seemed to take more effort than the one before. "I can’t believe... you do not hate me after everything I am... after everything I’ve done..."
"Hate you...? Don’t be conceited." Benjamin grabbed her face gently, tilting it toward his with surprising tenderness, and she felt something soft hit her lips.
A warm and gentle kiss. Utterly unexpected in her final moments.
Her expression slightly shifted into one of weak surprise, the last emotion she would ever feel, the final flicker of consciousness before the darkness took her completely.
"My first kiss... you thief..." She chuckled for a little while as tears rolled out of her eyes, the sound weak and broken but real, with something that might have even been gratitude.
She stopped moving mid-chuckle, her body going limp in his arms, and Benjamin laid her body gently on the ground, arranging her limbs with care, as if she were simply sleeping rather than dead.
Her face, in death, carried a peaceful expression that she had never worn in life.
"Mission complete," he sighed and closed her eyelids with his palms.
He lingered for a moment, looking down at the peaceful expression on her face, before stretching and vanishing from there: one moment present, the next gone without a trace, as if he had never been there at all.
