Chapter 456: Bonus Chapter 46: Death vs Death: So Much Gold!

"And you are absolutely sure you do not want to reconsider assassinating such an interesting person?" Severia asked, her tone carrying a hint of genuine curiosity. "A man of that caliber could be useful, valuable even, as an ally or a resource rather than a corpse. Many clients I know would pay handsomely for someone with that kind of power to be brought under their control."

"I can condone a lot of things in a marriage: differences of opinion, personal space, even occasional disagreements about important matters," Sara replied, her voice growing harder with each word. "But infidelity and betrayal are not among them. He made vows to me, promises that he has now broken. He must die for his transgressions, and I will accept no other outcome."

The hatred and resolve that flashed in Sara’s eyes in that moment was so intense, so primal, that the entire cavern felt a chill creep across their skin, and some patrons closer to their table nearly fainted from the overwhelming blood lust alone.

The air seemed to grow thick and heavy, pressing down on everyone present like an invisible weight that made breathing difficult.

Severia would have sworn the bloodlust was even directed at her own person, given the sheer intensity of the aura that emanated from the Amazon.

"I see you truly loathe this man with every fiber of your being," Severia observed, her voice remaining calm despite the oppressive atmosphere.

She tried to sip from her cup only to realize with mild disappointment that it was empty now, the fruit juice long since finished.

She set it down with a soft clink against the wooden table. "I accept the contract. I will eliminate him soul from the face of Elyndor... for 500 gold coins."

Severia smiled a bit, knowing that such an amount was far too unfair and obscene for a single assassination, even one of this difficulty.

She was testing the Amazon’s desperation, seeing just how far her hatred would drive her willingness to pay.

A single gold coin can keep an average man fed and comfortable for several months, providing food, shelter, and basic necessities without worry.

And with a family to support, it can certainly be about a month worth of comfort and security. Five hundred was far too—

"Deal!"

KACHING!

The small sack of coins hit the table with a heavy, satisfying thud as Sara pulled it out from somewhere within her cloak, the sound echoing through the suddenly silent cavern.

Some gold coins even fell on the ground from the impact, rolling across the stone floor in lazy arcs, and Sara was completely unbothered by the loss.

She didn’t even glance down at them.

Many eyes were instantly drawn to Sara, with many salivating openly at the sight of so much wealth being casually displayed.

The other patrons of the cavern, a collection of bandits, outlaws, and desperate souls, began to stir with interest, their hands twitching toward their weapons as the scent of easy money filled the air.

"That there is 1000 gold coins, a generous advance payment for your services," Sara said again, anger still visible in her face like a storm barely contained. "Please kill my husband without delay or hesitation!"

Something powerful was compelling her to seek her poor husband’s death, a driving force that seemed almost unnatural in its intensity.

Severia’s eyes were blown wide, something that doesn’t happen with the normally introspective and composed assassin.

The sight of so much gold, more than she had ever seen in one place, momentarily shattered her professional detachment.

Her hands trembled slightly as she reached for the heavy sack of coins, her fingers closing around the coarse fabric.

"W-Wait, are you a noble of some kind?" She asked as her hands shook to take the sack of coins, her voice betraying a rare moment of vulnerability. "This is enough for me to stop working for decades, maybe even retire completely from this life and live in comfort..."

"Something like that," Sara threw her hair back in casual pride, the motion sending her auburn locks cascading over her shoulders. "And if you succeed in killing that cheater, I will give you another 1000 gold coins as a bonus for a job well done. So do not fail me, or you will face consequences far worse than mere financial loss.

Severia looked around to see that Sara was already becoming a victim of abduction or worse, now that she had revealed herself to be someone with such immense riches.

The hungry eyes of the cavern’s patrons were fixed on the Amazon like wolves circling wounded prey, and Severia could practically feel the violent intentions radiating from the shadows.

"Are... you sure you should be this loud and open about your wealth?" Severia asked in her hushed tone, her voice sounded a note of concern. "You are painting a very large target on your back right now."

"Fret not. I have some guards stationed outside who will ensure my safety," Sara raised a hand to calm her down, the gesture dismissive and confident.

Then she paid the people in the cavern a sweeping glance, her eyes carrying a challenge that made several of them look away.

"Besides... apart from you, I do not see anyone powerful enough to hurt a single hair on my head. They will be dead before they even knew they were dead, hahaha! However, you are all open to try your luck! I do have quite the treasures in my carriage outside... It is... worth dying for to get your hands on, if you think you have what it takes."

The other information like identity, location, and the like were shared in hushed tones between them, details that Severia committed to memory with professional precision.

Then Sara stood up to take her leave, her chair scraping against the stone floor.

But she watched Severia for one long moment, her hazel eyes studying the assassin with an intensity that made even Severia feel slightly uncomfortable.

"What is it?" Severia asked, her voice rolling with a small curiosity.

"No... Nothing of importance. I suppose I felt a little worried for you, for some reason I cannot quite explain," Sara looked away, her expression softening slightly.

"Why? I told you I am experienced in assassinating individuals far powerful than myself," Severia giggled a little, a sound that was utterly incongruous with her deadly reputation. "An assassination isn’t about combat and fighting like you Amazons are accustomed to; you get there unnoticed, you act with precision, and your target dies before they even know you exist. There is no honor in it, but there is certainty."

With that, Sara nodded and left the cavern, her form disappearing through the heavy door as the night air rushed in to greet her.

And seconds later, some people also left the cavern as well, taking weapons and talismans with them for a potential heist that night.

Quite unfortunate for them, Severia thought to herself, knowing that anyone who attempted to rob an Amazon, at least THAT Amazon, and her guards would not live to spend a single coin anymore.
