Chapter 255: THE GUNSHOT THAT ENDED IT
Third POV
The east docks were shrouded in darkness. The old warehouse loomed over the dock like a forgotten tomb, making it the perfect place for exactly the kind of nefarious business that happened after midnight.
The streetlights barely worked and a thick fog had settled in and the air carried the smell of fuel and diesel alongside the sound of the black canal waters nearby.
Officers surrounded the area, hidden between shipping containers with their weapons raised and their eyes fixed on the lead detective for the signal.
With his back pressed against cold metal and his Glock heavy in his sweating palms he counted the seconds in his head. Gina Wolfe should be arriving any moment now. Finnegan had been right.
After the deliberate conversation planted inside the police station about having locked in Devin’s location, Gina’s mole had done exactly what they’d anticipated and carried the information straight back to her.
Thanks to Martha and the listening device she had planted in Gina’s study they had been able to intercept her calls to Devin.
Gina usually contacted him through other channels but the fear that the police had found her son’s location had made her careless and she had called him directly and arranged to stash him on a ship at the east dock and smuggle him out of the city.
Gina Wolfe’s sleek black car rolled up slowly with the tires crunching over gravel and broken glass. She stepped out alone carrying an envelope stuffed with cash and a spare coat.
Her poor boy had been turned into a fugitive by his own brother and it sat bitterly with her. It was a pity the car accident hadn’t finished what she’d started.
She had wanted Abigail gone of course but if Finnegan had gone alongside her Gina wasn’t sure she would have minded.
He had been nothing but a problem lately anyway. Her elegant black cashmere coat settled around her as she scanned the dock and waited for Devin to appear.
Then the hairs on the back of her neck rose. Something was wrong. The dock was too quiet and the man who was supposed to smuggle Devin onto the ship was nowhere in sight.
The sound of uneven footsteps reached her and several meters away her wounded son limped out from behind a container at the same moment something glittered in the fog and caught her eye.
"No!" she shouted immediately.
"It’s a trap, Devin. Run!"
"Freeze!" A commanding voice rang out from a megaphone.
"Gina and Devin Wolfe, this is the police! You are surrounded! Do not move! Put your hands where we can see them!" Floodlights snapped on all at once and a dozen blinding beams lit her up from every angle.
Officers emerged from their hiding places like ghosts with their weapons trained on both of them. Gina’s eyes swept the dock and the reality of what had just happened settled over her.
She had walked herself and her precious Devin straight into a trap.
"Is that any way to greet an old woman?" she called out, fighting to keep the fear from her voice.
Devin Wolfe had never heard fear in his mother’s voice before and even now he could barely process what he was seeing. This could not be the end.
That man still got to live his life while they were out here being hunted like animals.
"Mother!" he shouted, his voice cracking across the dockyard as officers moved steadily toward him.
"Put your hands in the air." Gina’s head snapped toward her son.
Raw fury and terror for him blazed in her eyes and she raised her hands obediently as an officer stepped forward to cuff her and then she drove her foot hard between his legs and snatched the gun from his holster in one vicious motion.
The gunshot cracked through the night and the officer crumpled and clutched his shoulder. Chaos erupted.
"Shots fired! Shots fired!" someone screamed over the radio.
Officers returned fire immediately and bullets cut through the fog and ricocheted off metal containers with sharp whining cracks.
"Run, Devin!" Gina screamed and her voice sliced through the gunfire.
"Don’t let them take you! Don’t let them win!" Devin stood frozen for a split second with shock carved into his face.
Any man would be shattered watching his mother throw herself into the line of fire for him. He watched in shock as a bullet buried itself inside her.
Blood sprayed across her face and he watched the light drain from her eyes and for the first time in years genuine fear and disbelief tore through his cold green gaze and gave way to horror.
"Mother!" he roared.
A bullet grazed his arm and pain detonated up through his shoulder but he barely registered it through the adrenaline flooding his veins.
Officers closed in from every direction and shouted commands with their weapons raised.
"Eat lead, you bastards!" he screamed and fired back wildly as he sprinted toward the warehouse’s side exit with his shoes slipping on the wet concrete.
He threw a look over his shoulder and saw his mother’s body crumple to the ground and hit the concrete with a dull thud, blood pooling dark and fast beneath her.
Devin screamed in rage and grief. Every instinct he had screamed at him to go back and drag her to safety and put a bullet in every officer standing between them but the police were closing in too fast and he dove through a side door and shattered the glass and disappeared into the maze of crates and containers inside.
His arm burned and his heart hammered so hard it felt like it would tear free from his chest and tears he hadn’t shed since childhood streamed freely down his face.
Outside on the cold concrete Gina lay still and wheezing as officers swarmed her. A silver handcuff closed around her wrist while an ambulance siren wailed somewhere in the distance.
The envelope of cash she had brought was scattered across the dock in the wind. As long as Devin got everything he had fought for, it wasn’t in vain.
As long as she could finally have everything she had ever wanted, it wasn’t in vain. Right?
