Chapter 254: SEARCHING FOR HIM
Finnegan
A loud beeping tore through the entire building and yanked me out of sleep. 1:47 AM. The red digits on the bedside clock burned in the darkness.
Abigail was still in my arms and the tension that surged through me eased slightly at the confirmation that she was safe.
I had the intruder alarm system installed the second day we arrived home from the hospital because I wasn’t taking any chances.
Devin had made it clear he wanted to finish what my mother started and would you look at that. I was right.
"Finn." Abigail’s soft sleepy voice reached my ears.
"What’s going on?" "Go back to sleep, baby," I murmured and pressed a kiss to her forehead.
The last thing I needed was her fully awake and alert because Abigail would never stay put if she knew there was an intruder. She mumbled something incoherent and drifted back under.
My men would handle it and the detective had two officers stationed on the estate just in case Devin showed up so we were as prepared as we could be for something like this.
That still wouldn’t stop me from making sure everything stayed under control. I kissed her forehead softly and made sure she was deeply asleep and then reached for the gun in the bedside drawer.
The night air outside was cold. My security team swept their torchlights across the grounds and Arnold fell into step beside me the moment I came down the side steps.
"There are two intruders." "Are they armed?"
"One of them has a handgun."
Devin sent two men to do what exactly?
"Where are they?"
"In the garage area, sir. The detective is already on his way."
I crossed the lawn without another word. My men had them seated on the concrete floor of the garage with their hands secured behind their backs and two security guards at the door and another at the side entrance.
There were two men in their mid-thirties, one with a split lip and the other sneering up at me with what I could only describe as a death wish.
"Which one of you wants to tell me what you were doing on my property at one in the morning with a gun?" I demanded.
The one with the split lip looked away and the other didn’t move at all. "Where is my brother?"
"We’ll handle this, Mr Wolfe. You can go back to bed," one of the officers the detective had posted on the estate said and my eyes narrowed.
"You are in my estate so I’ll ask the fucking questions." I turned back to the two men on the floor.
Rage boiled over and I grabbed the sneering one by the collar and drove my fist into his face. The crack of bone was deeply satisfying and blood sprayed across the concrete.
"Talk!" I roared and hit him again harder.
"Where the fuck is Devin?!" The second man tried to scramble away and I kicked him hard in the ribs and sent him sprawling.
"You came for my woman and my family. Start talking or I swear you won’t walk out of here." I grabbed the first man again and hit him repeatedly, each punch fueled by the memory of Abigail screaming and the gun pressed to her temple and the terror in Angel’s eyes during the crash.
Blood streaked the garage floor and the man gurgled through broken teeth.
"We d-don’t know. He only told us what to do."
"That’s too bad," I said quietly, tapping his cheek with two fingers.
"I don’t believe you." Twenty minutes later and a significant amount of screaming and blood across my garage floor, Detective Reyes walked in to find both men mumbling incoherent denials about Devin’s location.
He looked at the two of them on the floor and exhaled slowly through his nose. "Right."
"We’re not getting his location from these two because they genuinely don’t have it." I hissed through my teeth.
Arnold held out a cloth and I took it and wiped the blood from my hands. I would need a shower before getting back into bed with Abigail.
"My mother has it." "And she won’t hand it over," he said.
"We’ve searched her property twice and her lawyer is better than most judges I know. She won’t talk."
"She won’t talk to you," I said.
He raised a brow. "What are you thinking?"
I mulled over in my mind, searching for what would rattle my mother enough to make her act carelessly.
"She’s panicking," I said.
"Devin is wounded and he’s been off the grid for weeks and now two of his hired men are sitting in police custody. She doesn’t have him on her estate because you’ve swept it too many times which means they’re communicating in secret." I paused.
"What if she heard that you already have him?" The detective went still and then dragged a hand over his mouth.
"A leak? A deliberate one?"
"Yes. She has someone inside your team, I’d wager on it. Feed your team the information that we already have Devin’s location and it should push her to move him." His eyes narrowed and his head dipped in a slow nod.
"Then we track him the moment she does. But how would we know when and where?"
"I have someone on the inside that can help with that," I replied without offering any further detail.
The last thing I needed was for whoever was feeding my mother information to catch wind of this. I was done with this cat and mouse game entirely.
I wasn’t going to sit in my own home and wait for my mother or my brother to take another shot at us.
Not while they were coming after my Abigail. Not while Abigail was still healing. Not while Angel was in another country.
We had a lead now and Devin was alive and still actively coming for us and that meant I had to move first.
And it had to be a move that ended this for good.
"Mr Wolfe." The detective sighed. "When we get a location, and I am saying when, you need to let my team go in first. Are we clear?"
