Chapter 49: Criticism
"Thank you for your understanding; to strengthen my words, call Little Mi here and you will see for yourself."
"Alright," saying these words, she left the room.
"I completely agree with Mr. Gentleman; even though she is your slave, respect should still be shown because our new guest is here," added Garrett, who raised his glass, took a sip, and put the glass back in its place.
’Showing respect because a guest is here, and not because she is also a human? Hah, how funny. If you want to show off in front of someone, at least don’t lie to yourself.’
’I have never had anything against people who use a social mask as a tool. Because it is necessary if you want to become stronger and survive. But I hate people who use a mask but simultaneously believe they are those masks, while considering themselves someone good and better.’
’Of course, I don’t know what is inside a person, but by observing their actions, it’s possible to understand what hides behind that mask. People are the same everywhere, whether here or on Earth, where the majority of the masses of humanity are simply pathetic hypocrites who do not admit their true nature and, to avoid admitting it, put on false beliefs like religion, good deeds, and so on.’
’I had nothing against religion or good deeds; that is their decision-they truly want to believe and do these things, let them. But I have always despised those who use these things-like religion, status, power, good deeds-to cover up their dirty deeds. They are simply trash, nothing more than that.’
The door opened again, and two girls walked in: first, that same slave girl, and of course, she was followed by Little Mi, who was smiling as before.
"Father, so you are here; I’ve been looking for you everywhere but couldn’t find you. It turns out you were here the whole time... In the future, please warn me before you go anywhere," said Little Mi, immediately scolding her father for not telling her.
Well, if you think about it, Alister has been here for a fair amount of time, and moreover, for Little Mi, he is not only her father but also her master, so her worries about him are quite logical.
"So you really are her father... Forgive me," she bowed, asking for forgiveness for speaking to him with aggression without knowing the whole situation.
But she can be understood, since she had been lonely all her life, or at least in recent years, and judging by everything, no one had spoken with her normally at all. For the first time ever, Little Mi began to communicate with her in a friendly way; moreover, believing in Little Mi was easy because she looks like a child... that is, an innocent and kind child, which served as a trigger for this girl.
"As you have already noticed, she is my daughter, as I said before. But I forgive you because everyone makes mistakes, and I am no exception to that list."
"Buttt... then you were discussing a slave girl; whom were you discussing?" she asked.
"Forgive me, but this has already moved to a new level. You are a slave who served Captain Vincent Coldwell. And you think you have the right to interrogate us about what we were talking about? Even other aristocrats do not have such a right, yet you suddenly begin to interrogate Mr. Gentleman, which is very disrespectful-especially if we include the fact that he forgave you by his mercy. Don’t you think that what you are doing right now only complicates our situation?" Garrett abruptly intervened in the conversation with a massive critique directed at the girl; moreover, it was a very well-reasoned critique that was not aggressive, which further amazed Alister.
"I agree with Mr. Garrett; starting to interrogate another person-it doesn’t matter if they are an aristocrat or an ordinary person-is not a right unless it concerns them personally. But as I see it, you do not know that this concerns you, yet you still asked this question. In the future, I advise you to be more careful and respectful," Alister added his agreement to the critique.
"But since this conversation concerns you, I will answer your question. Yes, you are right, we were talking about slaves. But we were talking specifically about you. You see, I am coming to this city for the first time, so I need a slave or at least an assistant who will help me in studying this city," saying these words very politely with respect, which strengthened his name in the eyes of those around him, he continued the conversation:
"And I saw you on board, and I liked you as a slave, so I am buying you from Captain Vincent Coldwell. Now you are my slave and will serve me," he immediately explained the whole essence of their conversation.
The girl suddenly turned pale, not knowing what emotion to show; on one hand, she is being sold and bought like a resource, and although she knew this, hearing it directly was still painful, but on the other hand, she finally got rid of this aggressive captain and, judging by everything, fell into good hands, and moreover, Little Mi would now be near her, which gave better emotions.
She just looked with surprise and didn’t even say anything; silence covered the room, nothing could be heard except for how the ship rocked amidst the endless blue ocean that had no edges.
All the people inside just sat and looked at each other with serious faces, the only exceptions being Garrett and Alister, who just sat with their eyes closed, and of course, Little Mi with a slight smile; perhaps she was glad that now this girl would be with her, although one might think she already knew it would be so.
This quiet conversation was interrupted by Alister, who began to speak:
"Mi, please bring my money from my bedroom, which was in the bag when I was buying you chocolate," saying these words, he handed her the key.
"Alright!" saying these words, she ran.
