Chapter 802: The fifth day of the development trial (part 14)

After the first technique of Guardian’s attack type technique was explained to Valentina and the other leading figures, Aster’s "slash" seemed lacking, well, so long as you don’t take into account the fact that he can use his technique multiple times in a single day, but that’s not the power of the manual but an effect of Aster’s monstrous endurance and recovery capacities.

And that is actually the case, after all the "slash" Aster used had a similar effect to the second level of intent "sharpening" which increased the cutting power of the weapon it was imbued into, meaning that it made it easier for it to cut things, Guardian’s technique directly ignored obstructions.

However, with a teasing smile that some girls were really acquainted with and found both amusing and annoying depending on whether it was aimed at them or at some other "victim" of the dragon youth’s schemes, Aster simply told them to look out for a little "surprise" he had in store for them later.

Now, continuing where we left, Aster who heard the pained scream coming from the red lightning cloud didn’t show any reaction to it, instead he slowly swung his sword once again, it’s worth mentioning that both earlier and now, the sword wasn’t even slashed in the direction at which the red lightning cloud was.

"W-Wait, stop it already you damn lowlif... aghhhh!", the red lightning cloud actually directly spoke in a voice that everyone could hear, but his mix of panic-stricken and pained tone was interrupted by a second scream as the red lightning cloud was... cut in half.

"AGHHHHhhhh...", a horrible scream echoed through the sky for a moment to then fade into nothing as the red lightning cloud also disappeared, leaving behind a sepulchral silence, it didn’t last for long though.

"Woaah!", the junior disciples who witnessed the previous all exclaimed in unison, their eyes were cutely sparkling as they saw Aster defeat the red lightning cloud with two "random" swings of his sword.

Aria and the others who knew about Aster’s attribute, in other words annihilation and its properties were a bit confused though, because Aster didn’t use it neither as an attack nor to break the restrictions of this place in order to use his powers, contrary to what they would have expected.

So then, how did Aster cut the red lightning cloud which was not only hundreds of meters away from the ground in both occasions, but also wasn’t a solid object to begin with, clouds are made of countless small water drops and though this one in particular was the representation of a supervisor which meant it contained some sort of power, its base was the same as any other cloud, in other words if cut by a sword it wouldn’t really cause any damage to it.

The answer is actually simple, that was Aster’s attack type manual’s technique, as to why did it differ so much from the examples, he had shown to others so far, the reason is that in all those cases he wasn’t wielding a sword.

The real identity of Aster’s Absolute manual’s first technique is not "Slash" but "Absolute Field", without a sword one can create a field around whatever one wants to make it into a masterpiece of a sword, that’s what Aster has shown to others so far.

Then, when wielding a sword, the user can cut anything he wants within their detailed range of sight, now, the detailed range of a sight of a human is of six meters if we take into account the smallest aspects and it extends to twenty-five meters for people sized objects being able to distinguish even fine facial features for example.

And here a fun fact, there is a reason as to why the camp’s walls cover measure exactly one kilometer each, and that is because the area they cover is the exact same range of sight Aster has as of current with him at the center.

Of course, he can’t do things like seeing through solid objects nor inspect anything with utmost detail and gain intel on it within that range unlike when using his dragon eyes in the outside world, but they are still dragon eyes here, so if he climbs to the roof of one of the log cabin’s his gaze can cover the whole camp without obstructions.

Perhaps that’s why Absolute’s description said that it could both be the strongest or the weakest manual, it depended on who was the one using it, after all the field sounded amazing and it is, but that’s only within a small range around the user, a few rounds of arrows, or falling into a trap could send said user in a happy ride to the other world if he wasn’t careful, not to mention that the absolute field put a huge strain in the mind, body and the weapon of the one using it, contrary to the slash which only required an averagely strong body and directed most of the strain to the weapon resulting in it breaking after a single use.

’Well, I’m technically "cheating" but I guess that’s why my instincts were the ones that told me to chose this manual’, amusingly thought Aster, from the very beginning he has been using his dragon eyes, the reason as to why no one noticed is because he has always been keeping his sight at its maximum range, therefore the slit-like pupils of his dragon eyes widened making them indistinguishable from the naturally round ones of a human.

That’s why when Aster held the hilt of the sword, he had created in case there was a need for it, the atmosphere became heavy, because all the presents were within his field of sight as the battlefield covers a way smaller area when compared to the camp, he simply shrank and then extended it upwards reaching high into the sky instead to also cover the supervisors.

As to why Aster decided to reveal such a trump card in front of the supervisors, that’s because it’s better to have them fear him since it works as a deterrent, not to mention that this would create a fake image of what his "strength" is like in their minds, also earlier thanks to the reaction of those three when Guardian killed the bear with her claws, Aster confirmed something really important, the other supervisors have no idea of the manuals that they had access to.

Probably the manuals offered to the participants depended on the supervisor in charge of them, the blue flaming board also seemed surprised but on a smaller scale, probably it didn’t expect Guardian to be judged to be that stronger than the bear, but it did know what her manual could do.

Aster did give the blue flaming board a jump scare though, because even it froze after seeing the red lightning cloud disappear like that which was understandable, sure the techniques are meant to surpass mortal limits, but that was a bit too much, especially for a first technique.

"So, does anyone else have a complain about this battle’s result?", asked Aster as he pointed his sword at the sky.

The portal created by the black shadow and the red mist failed to keep its stability because those two immediately rushed into it, making the gray tomb "glare" at the blue flaming board and at Aster for a second before it also left, which signified the end of the battle against the bear.

"Crack!", the very moment those three left, a crack extended all the way from the tip of Aster’s sword to its hilt, the only reason as to why it was still stuck together was thanks to the thin golden line that crossed the center of the blade which remained perfectly fine.

"Phew, looks like it was worth bleeding so much for this", said Aster as he lowered his sword and wrapped it on bandages again, the moment he let go of the hilt, the heavy atmosphere finally disappeared while Aster let out a sigh of relief.

That thin golden line was of course created by adding his blood to the steel, even at mortal level its improvement effect which worked on anything it was added to, still remained though obviously in a way reduced amount, which is why he had to use a lot just to make that thin part of the steel turn golden colored, that would have normally been enough to make one of his "Dragon Buster" swords which are all large great heavy swords.

Also, he couldn’t simply regenerate the blood he lost with vitality like in the outside world, so he had to stuff himself with a nice full course meal to recover after that, luckily even if the sword broke, the golden toned part was perfectly fine, he could separate it and smelt it into another sword later.

The still awe-filled atmosphere was destroyed by Alice who had finally arrived to where Aster and the lynx were,

"Aster, come let me nurse you~", said the wild dragon princess as she clung to Aster’s right arm, making Aria and the others sigh, while the girls of the sect softly laughed.

"Even as a mortal, senior brother becomes a completely different person when he is holding a sword", mumbled a girl from the green lotus whose face was slightly red.

"Mm, that was amazing, I bet those guys won’t dare to come bother us so openly anymore!", added a girl from the black sword, while the girls who aren’t battle focused liked the sense of safety they felt when they were within Aster’s field, those fierce girls mainly from the battle peak were delighted at the strength Aster demonstrated, that was the senior brother they admired.

With Alice sticking to him like bubblegum, Aster walked through the battlefield making sure that everything has been properly wrapped up, he reached the area where the lynxes and wolves which had been immobilized instead of killed were, of course the girls of the sect were surrounding them and watching over them like a pack of hungry wolves to a prey, which is amusing considering there were actual wolves among said "prey".

"Are these the correct ones?", asked Aster to Kana who just arrived next to him by riding on Ember’s back.

"Mm, they were the ones that felt different than the "bad" guys we fought, I’m sorry for the trouble I caused to sisters and big brother..." mumbled the little girl in response, what happened is that Kana had identified wolves and lynxes among the army who at the moment of charging and attacking clearly didn’t give it their all.

Kana was in charge of the archers so she marked those animal’s positions and asked the archers to avoid attacking them, if possible, which they did, naturally Aster noticed it and asked her about it and that resulted in sparing selected targets among the army, which of course required some extra effort as subduing an enemy is harder than killing one.

It still resulted in the loss of some of the lynxes and wolves that Kana had marked, none were directly killed by the members of the sect, but there were a few accidents like some of them tripping over the corpses of others while they were charging to then fall into the spikes of a pit trap or even being trampled to death by their own fellows.

"Grrr", Guardian softly growled as she approached Kana and used her right paw to touch the little girl’s arm as if to comfort her.

"I was going to let the ones that resisted the least live anyway, with your help we targeted the ones that really deserved to be spared instead and by doing so we also reduced any change of our side suffering a strong retaliation in the process, so be proud of it, okay", said Aster as he patted the little girl’s head a couple of times.

"Mm~", the little girl’s slightly downcast expression was washed away by a cute smile appearing on her pretty face as she was praised by her big brother.

Aster also didn’t want wolves and lynxes to disappear from the forest as a whole, in part because that would go against Guardian’s wishes, in part because he didn’t want to reduce their evaluation from the blue flaming board and therefore their rewards but mainly because it could be achieved without putting his teammates in any real danger, that was Aster’s baseline, if he could do some good without risking his people’s life then he didn’t mind doing so, otherwise his priority has, is and will always be his own people’s wellbeing, that is also a leader’s duty.

And speaking of a leader’s duty, it was time to extort... request, a compensation for all this farce, since at the end of the day the supervisors clearly interfered way too much with this battle and Aster had zero doubts that they will continue to do so in the future, so of course he had to secure more benefits for his side.

"So, do we get some extra reward for this annoying attempt to get rid of us disguised as a trial?", asked Aster to the sky where the blue flaming board remained, seemingly lost in its thoughts.

"...", after a moment of silence, a message which made Aster’s eyes shine for a second appeared in front of him.

...

And here we must take a break from Aster’s side and change to Wade’s one, their fight had started at the same time as the one on the side of the Myriad Occupation sect, however their enemies were completely different.

For starters, there was no dead animal army, nor such a "tactical" approach as the one the bear had taken, animals on Wade’s side simply charged towards the camp all in a single wave, they were also way less when compared to how many Aster and the girls had to deal with, the animal army on Wade’s side barely reached four hundred in numbers.

That being said, they were unnaturally fierce and consisted mainly in reptiles, monitor lizards of different sizes to be more accurate, with the exception of a few dozens of boars and deer that were led by the mortal animals that had been harassing Wade’s group since they killed a couple of their fellow race members.

"We need reinforcements at the front, the trenches had been filled by the boars and those damn lizards are about to break through the fence!", shouted an elder from the Marsh Domain.

He as a poison user knew that the large gray lizards that were still attacking the fence even with bone spears stuck into their bodies, were bad news, if Aster was here, he would say that those guys are "Komodo dragons", of course they aren’t called like that in the cultivation world since dragons do exist, but besides that, other aspects remained the same like the fact that those have a venomous bite and are quite large.

"Damn it, why, why are they not even showing signs of hesitation after losing a fifth part of their group, we haven’t killed any lizards unless they attacked us since their meat is not even edible, so this level of animosity is not justified!", added an elder from the redheart who had nearly lost a hand to wound one of the Komodo dragons just to see the same one appearing in the battlefield a few minutes later.

"The water, they are coming through the water, block them!", shouted Wade as he stabbed a bone spear on one of the Komodo dragons just for it to bite the staff of the spear breaking it in half.

"Shaaaaa!", a loud sound came from the back of the battlefield where the ground slightly trembled as the one leading the animal army made its appearance, it was a komodo dragon as well, but this one was five meters large doubling the size of an adult of its race, also its body had many cut scars and it was missing the tip of its tail as well.

But more importantly, just by standing there, it radiated a strong sensation of threat for Wade and the others, it wasn’t lineage pressure, but that Komodo dragon was halfway to reaching Guardian and the bear’s level before new participants arrived, so you could see that as the preliminary form of it and unlike the kings that could use it with the help of the supervisors, this Komodo dragon was a natural.

In case you wonder how come the lynx didn’t know about this guy, that’s because the side of forest that faced Wade’s camp is past the invisible "veil" that prevented Guardian from advancing, it was still a forest but it was not the same forest as the one the lynx watched over.

"Hey, what the hell, is that even a mortal level animal!", exclaimed a male disciple from the Pleasure Palace sect.

’If that thing joins the fight, our defensive line will be broken immediately, so far we haven’t suffered any deaths but most of our weapons have already been used, we still have one last card to play but it will cause casualties on our side as well’, thought Wade.

Honestly they wouldn’t be in such a bad spot if they had organized themselves properly from the very beginning, with a proper defensive perimeter around their camp, they could have kept the animals away from the camp for at least thrice the time they managed to with the help of the trench, meaning that instead of only taking down around eighty animals in exchange of nearly three hundred bone weapons, they could have killed two hundred and forty of them, that would have been more than half of the animal’s army.

By then they could have relied in harassing tactics to clean the rest, but now they were about to be overrun by the animal army, in the midst of this the appearance of a blue flame board brought a sense of relief to Wade and a frown to the face of that big Komodo dragon.

Unfortunately, the sight of the blue flaming board coming to their aid, since this battle was obviously hard for a period of time called "development week", that Wade’s side expected didn’t happen, instead the image and voice of someone practically everyone on that side hated, made its appearance.

"Looks like you guys need some help, how about I take those enemies out of your hands?", that was naturally Aster who was allowed to contact Wade’s side at the discretion of the blue flaming board.

Of course, the appearance of the black-haired youth which probably haunted quite a few people on this side in their nightmares since they met him, made the already tense and irritated members of Wade’s group nearly lose it.

"Listening to that bastard is a waste of time, tell him to go...", the words of the representative from the Redheart’s family were interrupted by Aster casually saying.

"I can leave if you want to, but I wonder who will "volunteer" to sacrifice their members to win this battle, perhaps the ones that closed the door to other kind of solution could be a good choice".

Aster’s words were like that of a demon, the Redheart representative immediately felt intense glares coming her way, after all everyone was fine with sacrificing the lives of those that weren’t a part of their own respective groups, in fact they were looking for an excuse to do so and Aster has just given them one to use the Redhearts.

"Enough Lord of the Twin Sword Valley, your offer sounds good, however I want to know what the price of this sudden "saving grace" is?", said Wade, he of course couldn’t let their group crumble apart over a few words, to which Aster nodded.

"It’s good to see that you understand how it works after just a couple of "deals" between us, but this time I’m being generous and will only take a symbolic payment from your side, let’s say one person, that girl called Fawn to be more accurate", he said, as if Aster had kicked a hornet’s nest there were two people who immediately retorted.

"Dream on you fucking bastard!".

"You want the Mountain Amber family to let one of their princesses fall into your hands, you must have a death wish!".

The first one to kick up a fuss was surprisingly not even the potential fey princess herself not someone from Fawn’s side, but the glasses wearing younger brother of Wade, Albert, as for the second one it was a much more expected person, Bradley who was in charge of tying Fawn to the Mountain Amber family.

"I can understand the idiot from the Mountain Amber family, but why is the one from the Ocean Aquamarine getting so worked up, don’t tell me that you changed targets from Nerissa to that girl, just after losing an arm once, is your "love" that feeble?", mockingly said Aster which seemed to have hit the nail.

"N-Nonsense, we the Ocean Aquamarine family are allies with the Mountain Amber family!", exclaimed Albert trying to cover his real intentions.

"That’s not a price we can pay, choose another thing, if you simply want a woman, there are other options", said Wade obviously referring to the female disciples and elders of the Pleasure Palace, which for a change didn’t seem against the idea, after all, if the Lord of the Twin Sword Valley had the leisure to contact them and offer to take on the animal army that was attacking them on their stead, he must be in a better position than them, unfortunately Aster’s next words shattered their fantasies.

"Huh, do you think I need to rely on such a low tactic, when I could basically look in every direction and find something to sweeten my eyes on my end, what I want is the merits obtainable by killing more enemies, like I said the person you’ll hand over is a symbolic payment and that girl is the one I hate the less from your group", he said to then add.

"Well, I wouldn’t mind being able to brag about how the mighty Mountain Amber and now also the Ocean Aquamarine families had no choice but to comply with my conditions, to the list of my known feats".
