’Do I look too happy? I don’t want to overwhelm him.’ Helios thought as he noticed Ezra flinch slightly after being touched.
Helios wasn’t bothered.
Not at all.
If anything, it reassured him.
Just as he thought, Ezra was slipping away from him for a while.
But now?
Now Ezra was coming back.
Ezra was the one who came here.
Ezra was the one who smiled first.
Ezra was the one trying to reconcile.
At the end of the day, Ezra was still his.
Ezra still came back.
Ezra still appreciated him.
And Helios felt almost weightless because of it.
’For a moment... I thought Kaelis had gotten to him.’
The thought alone had haunted him for days.
Watching Ezra spend time with Kaelis.
Hearing the rumors.
Watching Ezra slowly pull away from him.
It had been infuriating.
But now all of that frustration was gone.
Because Helios won again.
He won against his stupid brother.
Ezra was still his.
And Kaelis was still nothing more than a burden.
An obstacle.
With a little more effort, and maybe a few carefully placed nudges, Helios could get Ezra to despise Kaelis all over again.
It wasn’t difficult.
It had never been.
People only liked Kaelis when they got close enough to see past the act.
Most never did.
And Helios knew exactly how to exploit that.
Kaelis may have publicly announced himself as the investigator of the Dark Ones and Cultists.
But Helios wasn’t worried.
Not really.
His plans were still exactly where he wanted them to be.
It didn’t matter that the kingdom knew now.
It didn’t matter that the king made announcements.
It didn’t matter that everyone was suddenly looking over their shoulders in fear.
His Cult was perfect.
Carefully built.
Hidden in places nobody would think to look.
The only real mistake Helios had made was not being the one who saved Lior.
That had irritated him more than he cared to admit.
And missing the sole survivor of Fleur De Lys and his family.
But even that problem had been dealt with quickly enough.
He adapted.
He always adapted.
He even managed to have Lior taken afterward.
So ultimately, the situation remained under control.
That was all that mattered.
Kaelis wasn’t smart enough to figure it out.
If he had been, he would’ve solved everything years ago.
Not now.
Not after countless deaths.
Not after five years.
And the fact that Kaelis publicly announced the investigation only made Helios think less of him.
The fact that he informed everyone.
The fact that he openly declared himself the investigator.
It was ridiculous.
The stupidest decision imaginable.
They accomplished nothing except spreading fear.
More panic.
More uncertainty.
And when everything inevitably fell apart, Helios would be the one standing there to save the kingdom.
The beloved prince.
The dependable prince.
The perfect prince.
The role practically played itself.
"If we aren’t too busy, on a free day..." Helios says with a warm smile, looking directly at Ezra. "I would like to take you and Lior out for a day in Solareth."
Ezra looks up at him.
"There’s a new toy shop that opened recently. Apparently, it’s the largest one in the city. They import toys from other kingdoms."
For the first time, Helios notices Ezra’s expression soften slightly.
Not because of him.
Because of Lior.
And somehow, Helios found that adorable.
"Lior would probably like that," Ezra says.
"He would."
Ezra smiles politely.
"That would be fun."
It would be.
It should be.
Helios’ goal was clearer than ever now.
His first objective remained the same.
Get Ezra back completely.
No doubts.
No distance.
No Kaelis.
Just Ezra.
Once that happened, everything else would become easier.
Because eventually Ezra would tell him.
Helios was certain of it.
Ezra would confess that Lior was his son.
And more importantly—
That Lior carried golden blood.
Once that happened, Helios would claim Lior as his own.
Officially.
Publicly.
Nobody would question it.
Nobody would dare.
And then there was only one loose end left.
Lior’s actual father.
Helios’ smile never wavered.
Because solving that problem wasn’t difficult either.
He had already planned to kill his brothers one day.
The king eventually.
Anyone who stood between him and the future he wanted.
Adding one more name to that list wouldn’t change anything.
Not when Ezra and Lior would finally belong where they were supposed to.
With him.
Forever.
And across from him, Ezra smiled politely while completely unaware of the thoughts running through Helios’s head.
’In the first place, Mother is right...’ Helios thought, his smile remaining perfectly pleasant as Ezra sat across from him.
’...Lior should’ve been mine.’
The thought came so naturally now that it barely even registered as cruel.
Because to Helios, it wasn’t cruel.
It was simply the truth.
A truth that the world had somehow gotten wrong.
Lior should have been his son.
His family.
His future.
The child sitting beside Ezra, laughing and calling him Maman.
That should have been Helios beside them.
Not someone else.
Not an unknown man.
Not a man who didn’t even deserve them.
Helios’ fingers lightly tapped against the armrest of his chair.
He had two chances.
Two opportunities to make sure things went the way they were supposed to.
The second was the night of the ball.
The night he personally arranged.
The night, everything had almost gone exactly according to plan.
Almost.
But the first chance...
That was the one that still frustrated him whenever he thought about it.
Because that was the closest he had ever gotten.
The closest he had ever come to making Ezra his.
’And he still doesn’t even know what happened.’
Eight years ago...
"Have you done it?" Helios, twenty years old, asks with a serious tone.
"Yes, Your Highness. I’m sure the Captain will pass out soon enough," Fizzy answers in a hushed tone. "I put quite a lot on his food...but just enough that he would still feel normal during your meetup."
Helios nods. "Good. Prepare my room, and make sure nobody comes near my palace."
Fizzy nods and bows. "Yes, Your Highness." He says, then looks around and walks away, leaving Helios alone.
The moment Fizzy disappears from sight, Helios lets out a slow breath he hadn’t even realized he was holding.
’Finally...’
It was finally time.
Though it wasn’t part of his plan, he was getting impatient.
Very impatient.
For years, he had told himself to wait.
To be patient.
To stay in control.
But it was becoming harder with each passing day.
What made him impatient?
Ezra.
His sweet Ezra.
His cinnamon sugar-smelling Ezra.
His Omega.
’Every single day is a battle.’
That was what Helios thought every time Ezra looked at him.
Every time he smiled.
Every single damn time he called Helios’ name.
The worst part was that Ezra never seemed to realize what he was doing to him.
How could he?
Ezra would simply smile, speak to him as he always did, completely unaware of the effect he had on people around him.
Completely unaware of the effect he had on Helios.
It made Helios feel so...hungry.
A hunger that never seemed to disappear, no matter how much time passed.
Starving for Ezra, who somehow grew even more beautiful every year.
Every year, Helios would think Ezra couldn’t possibly become any more captivating.
And every year, Ezra would somehow prove him wrong.
Ezra was sixteen now.
The peak age for Omegas.
Omegas begin a regular heat cycle, which means they are at their most fertile.
And Helios, as much as he planned to wait, couldn’t wait anymore.
Not when Ezra was constantly within reach.
Not when Helios found himself thinking about him from the moment he woke up until the moment he fell asleep.
Not when every interaction only seemed to make the obsession worse.
He wanted Ezra.
No...
He needed Ezra.
Needed him in a way that had long since stopped being reasonable.
’I want to touch him...I want to embrace him...I want to bite his–’
"Helios!"
Speaking of the sweetest angel with the sweetest voice.
The familiar voice cut through Helios’ thoughts instantly.
His spine practically tingled in excitement as he turned around.
The frustration, the restlessness, the impatience that had been building inside him moments ago seemed to vanish the second he saw him.
"Ezra," he says affectionately as he smiles down at Ezra.
And there he was.
Bright-eyed.
Warm.
Looking at Helios with complete trust.
The sight alone made Helios’ chest tighten.
Because after all these years, Ezra still smiled at him the same way.
Still approached him without hesitation.
Still looked happy to see him.
And every single time, it made Helios feel like the rest of the world had disappeared.
Like nothing else mattered.
Only Ezra.
Only him.
"Good morning," Helios says softly, unable to stop the fondness from slipping into his voice.
For all his patience, all his planning, all his restraint...
Seeing Ezra always made him forget how to breathe.
"Let’s have our walk?"
