Chapter 126: Chapter 81: Behind-the-Scenes Tactics
"What? The plane crashed?"
"Yes, Mr. Sabeck. It’s all over the papers. They’re saying it was a terrorist attack by the Heretics."
"Let me see..."
New Elderidge, West Port Airport.
Sabeck got a call from his subordinate the moment he stepped off the plane.
When he heard the plane had been blown up, his first reaction was that his underling was joking with him—expressing his deepest, truest wish. That way, they could just go loot the crash site, find Sean’s head, pop it in a portable cooler, and keep it safe to exchange for immense wealth and merit.
But when he actually grabbed an evening paper from a magazine rack in the airport terminal and glanced at it, he realized the plane really had been blown up.
Tragedy! This morning, Flight G404 from Kendili International Airport to New Elderidge was hit by a terrorist attack and crashed in Siracle State. The number of casualties is unknown, and relevant departments are currently compiling statistics.
Sabeck: "???"
’No way, it really crashed?’
"Who did it?" he asked his subordinate.
His subordinate sounded slightly taken aback. "Wasn’t it you, Mr. Sabeck?"
Sabeck: "?"
"Are you stupid!"
’Do I have the balls to pull something like this?’
’Even if I did, I don’t have the means!’
Planting a mole in an airline and planting a bomb are two completely different concepts. Getting information is easy. In this day and age, as long as you pay enough, they’ll even send you the passenger manifest. But if you want to blow up a plane, it’s not just a matter of money. Don’t forget, it’s still the Day of Abstinence. To put it more seriously, this kind of act could even be classified as a political crime. They’d report you in a heartbeat.
But Sabeck would never say that out loud, of course. Did he have no pride?
"Use that pig brain of yours," Sabeck cursed. "If I had planned to blow up the plane, why would I have come to New Eldo?"
’Just for a vacation?’
"That does make sense." Hearing this, his subordinate belatedly realized that Mr. Sabeck didn’t seem to have a reason to blow up the plane. When he first heard the news, he’d honestly thought they had done it. He was even thinking about how successful their cover-up was, pinning the whole thing on the Heretics. ’As expected of Mr. Sabeck.’
But it turned out that wasn’t the case.
’But if it wasn’t them, then who could it be?’
"Who else found out that Sean and the others had left Alola Town so quickly?"
Sabeck was so angry he swore. "That’s the fucking question I’m asking you!"
’Who’s the boss here, anyway?’
On the other end of the line, his subordinate immediately snapped to attention, gave an imaginary salute to the phone, and said seriously, "I’ll go investigate right away!"
Sabeck: "Then fucking go!"
He hung up, still cursing.
’These stupid underlings will believe anything,’ he thought. ’They make it sound like anyone who knew Sean and the others were going to New Eldo would dare to blow up a plane. Is it really that easy?’
In Sabeck’s view, there were only two possibilities.
Either it was Zajik from the Florist Family, or it was someone behind these major families. No one else would have the guts.
Zajik shouldn’t have had the guts either, but Sabeck had heard that he’d failed a mission because of Sean, causing the Florist Family to suffer heavy losses. As a result, he was called back by the family to be held accountable and had to make a "military pledge."
The content of the pledge was easy to guess: kill Sean within a certain number of days to atone for his failure and lessen his punishment. Zajik’s motive was therefore quite strong. After all, if he couldn’t kill Sean, the Florist Family would kill him. Assuming his deadline was approaching, it was possible Zajik would do something like this. If Sean didn’t die, he would. Who would care about the consequences at that point?
’Just blow up the plane first and figure out the rest later.’
But personally, Sabeck didn’t want Sean to die.
To be precise, he didn’t want Sean to die in this plane crash.
If Sean had to die, it had to be by his hands.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t get a single cent.
News of Carl Black’s resurrection had already spread throughout the Void Technique Space, and the third level of the Holy Sanctuary was now open to all Wizards. Sabeck knew very well that for Witch Hunters like him, the days ahead would get harder and harder. This was one of the reasons that had pushed him to make this risky decision.
If he didn’t make some more money now—before Carl Black officially entered the scene—he wouldn’t be able to earn it later.
He was just a lowly Tier Five. If he saw the esteemed Lord Blake, he would 100% give him a wide berth. He would piss off anyone before he pissed off Blake.
Hundreds of years had passed and Blake was still alive. That "age" alone said a lot.
He and Blake were not on the same level at all.
No one was on the same level as Blake.
There was a saying from the Era of Polymath that still held true today—
There are two kinds of Wizards in the world: everyone else, and Blake.
Therefore, he had to kill Sean, or at least be involved in the matter. He needed to save up enough money. If that still wasn’t enough to let him retire behind the scenes, then he’d change his identity. When Carl Black appeared, maybe he could even abandon the darkness for the light and play the double agent.
He even had his speech prepared.
He only became a Witch Hunter because life forced his hand. In reality, he was a good person. One, he didn’t force himself on women. Two, he didn’t rob people. Three, he didn’t even have any tattoos. Besides killing, smoking, and drinking, he had never done a single bad thing. His hundreds of underlings could all testify to that.
Sabeck had given his future a lot of serious thought.
The only thing he hadn’t considered was that the person he was currently trying to kill was Carl Black himself.
He was still pondering what he should do now.
The plane crash had completely disrupted his original plans, preventing him from making many of the arrangements he should have made in advance.
