Chapter 551: The Queen Who Wants to Find the Truth (I)

Primrose froze on the spot and forgot to close her mouth. She had never told anyone else about the strange item in her possession except the people in her inner circle.

So how could Lady Nina possibly know about the skull?

[Shit. Shit. Shit. If that damn vision is wrong, I’m definitely getting thrown into the dungeon for shouting in front of the Queen!]

Nina was close to panicking. [Why the hell do those visions keep bothering me? Damn it!]

[I can even see the skull’s eyes in my dreams!]

Ah, so that was how she knew what items she needed to collect.

But why would the Old Gods give her those visions? Hadn’t Leofric told her that the Old Gods had already vanished?

Unless the one sending those visions wasn’t the Old Gods at all, but the New Gods... or perhaps some Gods who had survived back then.

After all, the fifteen Gods who disappeared within a single week were not the only Gods in existence. There were many others, so it wouldn’t be strange if some of them had managed to survive.

Honestly, there were far too many Gods, and Primrose didn’t always keep track of all of them. The only one she could clearly remember was the Moon Goddess. Even then, it had been a long time since she had last stepped foot inside the Moon Goddess’s temple.

But setting that aside, Lady Nina finally spoke again when Primrose remained silent for too long.

"Your Majesty! I know you probably think I’m crazy, but I swear I’m not!" Lady Nina said in a rush. "If you really have that skull, please... you have to let me see it!"

[Oh, whatever! I’m so sick of dealing with all this shit.] Nina was on the verge of losing her patience. [I even ended up buried in debt because of those Gods. I just want this whole mess to be over already!]

"Your Majesty! I—"

"Lady Nina," Edmund finally interrupted. "Let us get out of the carriage first, and then I will let you see the skull."

The moment she heard Edmund’s voice, Nina quickly stepped away from the carriage.

"Right. Right. I’m sorry, Your Majesty."

Edmund then talked to Primrose through his mind. [I’m sorry. I really wanted you to rest first, but it looks like we have something more important to deal with right now.]

Primrose smiled and took his hand. "I can rest later," she said. "Let’s deal with this first." Then she paused for a moment before adding, "But is it really alright for us to look at the skull without Sir Leofric here?"

Edmund looked slightly hesitant at first, but then he said, "As long as we’re only taking a look, I think it should be fine."

After all, the palace was currently short on mages since Salem was still staying in Illvaris. Because of that, it would be best not to spend too much time around a magical artifact whose origins they barely understood.

"That’s true, but still..." Primrose said. "Maybe you should have the soldiers send word to Leofric and ask him to return to the palace as soon as possible."

Edmund nodded. "I will."

Not long afterward, they stepped out of the carriage and made their way toward the warehouse located behind Noctvaris Palace.

[I can’t believe they actually keep a skull inside the palace,] Lady Nina thought.

[But what’s even harder to believe is that they’re actually letting me see it!]

"Lady Nina, before we go inside, I’d like to ask you something," Primrose said. She stopped in front of the warehouse entrance, standing between Nina and the door.

"Of course, Your Majesty." Nina nodded quickly. "I’m sure you have many questions for me."

[She’s probably going to ask how I know about the skull.]

[Or maybe she wants to know if I know a mage.]

[Or does she think I’m practicing black magic?!]

The more Nina thought about it, the more she felt that confronting Primrose about the skull had been a terrible idea.

As if things were not bad enough, Primrose’s actual question was completely different from anything Nina had expected. "Which God do you serve, Lady Nina?"

Nina immediately stopped blinking. "W-What do you mean, Your Majesty?" she asked. "How did you even come up with a question like that? Did someone tell you something?"

Primrose was smiling, but her words were much less gentle than her expression.

"I have no obligation to tell you where I got my information, Lady Nina," she replied calmly. "But as your Queen, I am ordering you to tell me everything you know about this skull."

[I didn’t know she could be this intimidating,] Nina thought in shock. [I thought she was just a kind and soft-hearted queen.]

Truthfully, Primrose would never have pulled rank like this if it did not involve the safety of her people and herself.

If others ended up thinking she was being forceful because of it, then so be it.

"I’m waiting, Lady Nina," Primrose said.

Nina took a deep breath before finally deciding to speak. "You’ve misunderstood, Your Majesty. I don’t serve any God, and I have no intention of doing so."

"The reason I want to see the skull is simply because I know it’s a dangerous object, and we need to be careful around it."

Primrose didn’t respond right away. She simply watched Nina in silence, making Nina feel as though she was waiting for a more complete answer.

"Alright, it’s not just the skull," Nina admitted with a sigh. "Even the old music box I destroyed before was a dangerous artifact. That’s why you became sick and even lost consciousness."

She paused for a moment before continuing. "But I didn’t do any of that because I serve a God. If anything, it’s the exact opposite. I did it because I want to stop a God from waking up from his deep slumber."

Primrose nodded slowly. "Then who told you all of this?" she asked. "Ordinary people can’t track down relics left behind by the Gods, nor can they receive visions about them."
