Chapter 247: Chapter 247: The Vanishing Act

Alexander drove through the heavy city traffic, steering his Tahoe toward Jessica’s apartment building. He had absolutely no intention of returning to the TMC hotel tonight, nor did he want any of the organization’s watchful eyes tracking his movements. His mind was still reeling from everything Marcus had revealed to him at the shipyard. Marcus was risking everything to help him, putting a massive target on his own back just to keep Alexander alive and offer a path to save Aria. Alexander couldn’t simply accept that level of brotherhood without paying it back. He needed to check on Marcus’s mother and his little sister, Ashley.

He pulled up to the familiar apartment, his eyes scanning the windows. Everything on the outside looked completely normal, but the moment he walked up the stairs and knocked, a chilling sense hit him.

The lock clicked open under his hand. He stepped inside, but the entire apartment was dead silent, completely empty.

"Is anybody home?" asked Alexander, his voice echoing off the bare walls.

Nobody answered. A deep frown cut across his forehead as he walked through the rooms. This was getting incredibly strange. It had already been several days since he last laid eyes on Jessica, and the apartment felt totally abandoned. Shaking off a sudden spike of anxiety, he figured she must still be at the hospital, pullng double shifts or spending every waking hour watching over Ashley’s recovery.

He got back into his truck and drove straight to the medical center. As he pulled into the crowded parking lot, his instincts immediately flared. Several police cruisers were slowly circling the perimeter, their emergency lights off but their officers scanning the crowds as if they were actively hunting for a fugitive. Alexander completely ignored them. His Tahoe was practically a rolling armory, packed to the brim with high-caliber weapons and gear, but he doubted a couple of local beat cops would look twice at his tinted windows.

He marched through the sliding glass doors of the main lobby and walked straight up to the central reception desk.

"I’m looking for Ashley," said Alexander, leaning his heavy forearms against the counter. "Can you tell me what room she’s in?"

"Ah, yes, Ashley is officially out of danger," said the receptionist, tapping rapidly on her keyboard before looking up with a polite smile. "She has been moved down to the standard recovery ward, room 314."

Alexander’s brow furrowed, a cold drop of irritation hitting his stomach as he processed the room number.

"Wait a second," said Alexander, his voice dropping into a dangerous, demanding tone. "That room number isn’t in the private luxury wing. I personally paid a massive cash deposit to ensure she stayed in the VIP suite. Why the hell was she moved down to a standard ward?"

"According to our system records, someone came in and officially withdrew a large portion of the medical deposit," said the receptionist, pulling up a digital file on her screen. "They claimed there was an absolute emergency and they desperately needed the cash, so we had no choice but to downgrade the patient’s accommodations."

"Start the paperwork right now and move her back up to the VIP wing," said Alexander, pulling his black card from his pocket and slamming it on the counter. "I will cover any extra expenses. Just tell me exactly who the hell authorized that withdrawal."

"It was her mother, Jessica," said the receptionist, turning the monitor slightly toward him and sliding a printed document across the desk. "I have the physical authorization form signed right here. Take a look."

Alexander squinted at the paper, checking the signature carefully. It was definitely Jessica’s handwriting.

"I understand. Something urgent must have come up," said Alexander, sliding his black card back to the receptionist. "Go ahead and charge the full deposit again. Please, help me transfer her back to the VIP suite immediately. Can I go up to see her while you prepare everything?"

"Of course, here is your visitor’s badge," said the receptionist, handing him a plastic pass with a sigh. "To be honest, nobody has come to see her in two days. If you could help me by registering at least one person as the official emergency contact, I would truly appreciate it, young man."

Hearing this set off massive alarm bells inside Alexander’s head. What the hell is going on here?

He hurried down the bright corridor and took the elevator up to the standard recovery ward. He pushed open the door to room 314 and stepped inside. Ashley was sitting up in bed, looking pale but significantly better than before.

"How are you doing... how do you feel?" asked Alexander, pulling up a plastic chair to sit right beside her.

"I feel good" said Ashley, her eyes lighting up slightly as she recognized him. "What about you? What are you doing here?"

"I came to see how you were holding up," said Alexander, forcing a reassuring smile onto his face. "I haven’t been able to visit lately, but I wanted to make sure everything was taken care of."

"Thank you, I’m really glad to see someone," said Ashley, her voice dropping into a lonely whisper as she looked down at her sheets. "I’ve been completely alone all these days. I honestly thought everyone had forgotten about me."

"Alone?" asked Alexander, his brow furrowing instantly. "But your mother, Jessica, has been coming to see you, right?"

"My mom?" asked Ashley, looking up with genuine confusion. "Since they admitted her and I had to go into surgery, I haven’t seen her at all."

A cold sweat broke out across Alexander’s back. Things were turning out to be infinitely worse than he had initially anticipated.

"Do you happen to have your mother’s phone number?" asked Alexander, keeping his voice calm and steady.

"I don’t remember it, and I lost my phone the day of the attack, so I can’t give it to you," said Ashley, shaking her head sadly.

"I understand, don’t worry about it," said Alexander, gently patting her arm. "She’s probably just been incredibly busy with some urgent matters. The important thing is that you made it through the surgery safely and you’re recovering well. You don’t need to worry about anything else."

"And the money?" asked Ashley, her breathing suddenly turning shallow as a frantic, almost fanatical glint flashed inside her eyes. "I only had a little bit left, and I used it to pay for my mom’s care before. Did you... were you able to contact my brother?"

Looking at her face, Alexander realized with a jolt that Ashley was completely, pathologically obsessed with Marcus. Remembering the solemn promise he had made to his brother at the shipyard, Alexander immediately adopted a firm, protective tone.

"No, I haven’t been able to contact him yet, but everything is absolutely fine," said Alexander, looking directly into her frantic eyes. "I already paid for everything. Right now, the staff is setting up the transfer to move you back into the VIP suite. You will have every single comfort available, and I will personally make sure you lack absolutely nothing. Everything is going to be fine. In fact, let me go downstairs to double-check the paperwork, and I’ll come back to see you the moment you are settled upstairs. Just wait for me here."
