Chapter 230: Chapter 230: The Weight of the Trigger

"The contract doesn’t involve murder," said Alexander, stepping between Sarah and the trembling mistress. "Let’s go. It’s better for everyone."

"Give me your gun!" screamed Sarah, her eyes wide and bloodshot losing her mind. "Give it to me right now!"

Alexander looked down at her, knowing she wouldn’t back down. He sighed, checking the weapon in a split second looking her dead in the eyes.

"Do you really want to do this?" asked Alexander, his voice cold and steady. "If you kill them, there is no turning back."

"Yes!" shouted Sarah, her hands shaking with rage. "I will kill these bastards! They ruined my life!"

Alexander raised his weapon and handed it over to her.

The mistress collapsed to the floor, her face drenched in tears as the barrel pointed right at her. At the same time, the husband, who had just regained consciousness, opened his eyes only to see his wife holding a gun. He scrambled backward in pure panic.

"Please, Sarah, don’t do this!" begged the mistress, shielding her face with her bloody hands. "I’m sorry, I swear I’m sorry!"

"Sarah, stop! Think about what you’re doing!" pleaded the husband, his voice cracking as he pressed his back against the broken bed frame. "We can talk about this! Don’t shoot!"

Sarah stood there, her breath ragged, her finger resting on the trigger. She stared at them, her whole body trembling as the weight of the moment crashed down on her. The room went silent except for her heavy breathing and the pathetic sobbing of the two on the floor.

She squeezed her eyes shut, but her finger froze. She couldn’t pull the trigger.

The gun slipped from her weak grip as she broke down, falling to her knees and crying hysterically into her hands.

Alexander stepped forward, catching the weapon before it hit the floor. He locked it back into his holster, grabbed Sarah by the arm, and pulled her up, guiding her out of the ruined apartment without a word.

He led her downstairs to the parking lot, opened the door of his silver Tahoe, and helped her inside before driving away into the city lights.

Sarah sat in the passenger seat, sobbing uncontrollably unaware that Alexander had secretly ejected the chambered round right before handing her the weapon, hoping she wouldn’t have the nerve to pull it.

"Where am I taking you?" asked Alexander, keeping his eyes on the dark city streets.

Sarah quietly mumbled an address, her voice barely a whisper.

Alexander drove in silence, the heavy tension filling the interior of the silver Tahoe. No one spoke for miles, the neon signs of the city blurred through the rain-streaked windows. Finally, Alexander couldn’t resist breaking the quiet.

"Are you okay?" asked Alexander, glancing briefly at her.

"How am I supposed to be okay?!" screamed Sarah, turning her tear-stained face toward him. "My marriage is over! My life is over! What the fuck am I supposed to do now?!"

"You survived," said Alexander, his tone softening just a fraction as he gripped the steering wheel. "A lot of people don’t even get the chance to close that Chapter. You saw them for what they really are. Now you rebuild. It sucks, but you’re alive."

Sarah didn’t answer. She just pulled her knees to her chest and stared out the window, her breathing slowly leveling out as the shock began to fade into exhaustion.

A few minutes later, Alexander pulled up to the curb of the address she gave him. Sarah opened the door, giving him one last lingering look before stepping out into the night and disappearing into the building.

Alexander her go, then slammed his hands against the steering wheel in frustration. He shifted the Tahoe into drive and hit the gas, the engine roaring as he tore down the empty avenue.

"These missions are never as easy as they look" Alexander to himself, his jaw clenched tight. "I should have just fulfilled my part of the contract and left."

He rubbed his face, irritated at his own lapse in judgment.

"I’m an idiot," whispered Alexander, staring at the road ahead. "Don’t get involved. Be professional. Be professional. You are a TMC agent. You are a TMC agent."

He pulled over to the side of the road and grabbed his encrypted phone. It was barely 11:00 PM, and he had no intention of ending his farming session just yet. He unlocked the device and opened the secured TMC mission board.

Alexander quickly scrolled past the locked high-tier contracts, sliding his finger down to the remaining low-level White rank requests. Due to the late hour, there were very few left available on the grid. His eyes settled on one of the final postings at the bottom of the screen.

> Description: I don’t want to be alone tonight.

> Requirements: Young, handsome, open-minded.

> Open to new experiences.

> Reward: $25k.

Alexander stared at the screen, a dark smirk forming on his lips.

"Wow, the same amount as escorting that crazy woman," muttered Alexander, shaking his head as he accepted the contract. "Just how open-minded do I need to be? I really hope they don’t try to shove a fist up my ass."

"Well, there’s nothing else," muttered Alexander, scrolling one last time through the short list. "I definitely don’t want to play babysitter tonight."

The only other active contract available was an escort mission to transport an eight-year-old girl out of the city. He wasn’t in the mood to waste hours driving long distances just to move someone around.

"Let’s just get this over with," Alexander, tapping the screen to officially accept the $25k contract.

The screen blinked, loading the secure target data and revealing the coordinates of the client. Alexander stared at the GPS map, a look of pure disbelief hitting his face as he looked up from his phone to the dark apartment complex right in front of him.

"Wow, what a coincidence..." said Alexander, a dry chuckle escaping his throat.

The contract location was inside this exact same building.
