Chapter 88: Chapter 87: The Condition

ARIA’S POV

Aria couldn’t stop crying. A month of holding it together, of forcing herself to function, of pretending she was fine....it all came crashing down.

She’d prepared herself for his anger. His coldness. His dismissal.

She hadn’t prepared for the way he was looking at her. Like he was seeing her....really seeing her....for the first time. Like her pain was hurting him too.

"I don’t hate you," Damien said quietly.

She looked up, sure she’d misheard. "What?"

"I don’t hate you. I’ve tried. God knows I’ve tried. But I can’t." He stood, moved around the desk, and suddenly he was right in front of her. "I’m furious at you. I’m devastated by what you did. I don’t know if I can ever trust you again. But I don’t hate you, Aria. I hate that I still love you."

The words stole her breath. "You....you still..."

"Love you? Yes. Unfortunately." His jaw clenched. "I’ve spent a month trying to forget you. Trying to move on. Trying to convince myself I was better off without you. And I failed. Spectacularly. Because apparently you’ve ruined me for anyone else."

"I’m sorry...."

"Stop apologizing." His hand shot out, gripping her chin and forcing her to meet his eyes. "Stop saying you’re sorry and start telling me what you’re going to do about it."

"I don’t....I don’t understand...."

"You say you love me. That you’ll love me forever. That you want my forgiveness." His thumb brushed across her cheekbone, wiping away tears. "Prove it."

"How? Just tell me how and I’ll do it. Anything. I’ll do anything."

"Anything?" His eyes were dark, intense, searching. "Do you mean that?"

"Yes. Anything. I’ll spend the rest of my life proving I’m sorry if that’s what it takes. Just....just give me a chance. Please."

He was quiet for a long moment, his hand still on her face, his eyes studying her like he was trying to see into her soul.

Then he stepped back.

"Stand up."

She obeyed, her legs shaking.

"I’ve been thinking about this all night," Damien said, moving back to his desk. "About what it would take for me to even consider forgiving you. About whether trust can be rebuilt after what you did. About whether we have any chance at all."

Aria held her breath.

"And I’ve come to a conclusion." He turned to face her. "If...and this is a big if....I’m going to forgive you, if we’re going to try this, it’s on my terms this time. Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"You’re going to work for me."

She blinked. "What?"

"You’re going to work for me. As my personal assistant. At Blackwood Enterprises." His voice was calm, matter-of-fact, like he was discussing a business arrangement. "You’ll be in my office every day. You’ll handle my schedule, my meetings, my correspondence. You’ll work closely with me. Very closely."

"Damien, I’m a doctor. I don’t know anything about...."

"You’re brilliant. You’ll learn." He cut her off. "That’s not the point anyway. The point is that you’re going to earn back my trust. Day by day. Hour by hour. Under my direct supervision."

"I don’t understand. How does me being your assistant..."

"Because I can’t trust you when I can’t see you." His voice dropped, became almost dangerous. "Because the only way I can even consider forgiving you is if I know exactly where you are and what you’re doing at all times. Because I need control, Aria. And this time, I’m going to have it."

Her heart was racing. "Okay. Okay, if that’s what you need, I’ll do it. I’ll quit the hospital. I’ll work for you. Whatever you want."

"I’m not finished." He moved closer again, his presence overwhelming. "Working for me is just the beginning. You’re also going to submit to whatever punishment I decide you deserve for what you did."

The word "punishment" sent a shiver through her. "What kind of punishment?"

"Whatever kind I decide. Professional consequences when you make mistakes. Personal consequences when I need them." His hand came up to her throat....not squeezing, just resting there. A reminder of his claim. "You’re going to follow every order I give you. In the office and in private. You’re going to give me complete control. And you’re going to do it without complaint, without hesitation, without question."

Aria’s breath was coming faster now. "You want...you want complete submission."

"Yes. Because that’s what it’s going to take for me to even consider trusting you again." His eyes were intense, boring into hers. "You say you’ll do anything. Prove it. Submit to me. Let me have control. Let me punish you when I need to. Let me rebuild what you destroyed on my terms."

"And if I agree? If I do all of this?"

"Then maybe...maybe....I’ll be able to forgive you. Maybe we’ll have a chance. Maybe we can rebuild what you broke." His hand tightened slightly on her throat. "But I make no promises. You could do everything I ask perfectly and I might still decide I can’t trust you. That’s the risk you take."

"And if I say no?"

"Then this is goodbye. For real this time. You walk out that door and we never see each other again."

The choice was clear. Submit completely or lose him forever.

It wasn’t really a choice at all.

DAMIEN’S POV

Damien watched the emotions play across Aria’s face. Fear. Desperation. Hope. Determination.

He was asking for a lot. Complete submission. Total control. The right to punish her however he saw fit. It was extreme. Possibly cruel.

But it was what he needed. The only way he could see them possibly moving forward.

"I need to hear you say it," he said, his hand still at her throat. "I need to hear you consent to this. All of it. No ambiguity. No room for misunderstanding later."

Aria’s voice was shaking but clear. "I consent."

"To what specifically?"

"To working as your personal assistant. To being under your supervision. To following your orders." She paused, swallowing hard. "To submitting to punishment when you decide I deserve it. To giving you complete control over me...professionally and personally."

"Why?"

"Because I love you. Because I destroyed your trust and I need to earn it back. Because I’ll do whatever it takes to prove I’ve changed. That I’m worth the risk."

He studied her face, looking for doubt, for hesitation, for any sign she didn’t fully understand what she was agreeing to.

He found none. Just desperate determination and devastating love.

"This isn’t going to be easy," he warned. "I’m not going to make it easy. When I’m angry, I’ll punish you. When I’m hurt, I’ll push you. When I need control, I’ll take it. You’ll be in my office where I can see you, watch you, make sure you’re not hiding anything from me. And when I want you...and I will want you, Aria...you’ll give yourself to me. Completely. No holding back. No secrets. Do you understand?"

"Yes."

"This isn’t some romantic reconciliation where we kiss and make up and everything’s perfect. This is me deciding if I can ever trust you again. And you’re going to prove...every single day, that you’re worth the risk."

"I understand."

"Say it again. Say you consent. Say you understand what you’re agreeing to." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"I consent." Her voice was stronger now. "I understand that you need control. That you need to punish me. That you need to rebuild trust on your terms. And I accept. All of it. I’ll do whatever you ask. I just want a chance to prove I love you."

Something in Damien’s chest loosened slightly. Not forgiveness....he wasn’t there yet. But something. A crack in the wall he’d built around his heart.

"You start tomorrow," he said, releasing her throat and stepping back. "8 AM. My office at Blackwood Enterprises. The address will be sent to you."

"Tomorrow?" She looked panicked. "But I need to...I have to quit my job at the hospital....I need to...."

"Figure it out. That’s your first test. Show me you’re capable of handling whatever I throw at you." His voice was firm. "And Aria? Wear something professional. You’re my assistant now. Not a maid. Not a lover. My employee. Dress accordingly."

"Yes. Okay. I will."

"Don’t be late. I won’t be lenient just because we have history."

"I won’t be. I promise."

He moved back behind his desk, creating physical distance. Business mode. Professional. Cold.

"You can go now. I’ll see you tomorrow."

She stood there for a moment, looking lost. Like she wanted to say more. Do more. Maybe reach for him.

He raised an eyebrow. "Was there something else?"

"I just....thank you. For giving me this chance. For not....for not completely giving up on us."

"Don’t thank me yet. You have no idea what you’ve just agreed to."

"I don’t care. Whatever it takes."

As she turned to leave, he added quietly, "Aria?"

She stopped, turned back. "Yes?"

"This is your last chance. Don’t make me regret it."

The words hung in the air between them. A promise. A threat. A final warning.

"I won’t," she said, her voice fierce despite the tears still wet on her cheeks. "I promise. I won’t let you down again."

Then she was gone, the door closing softly behind her.
