Chapter 1805: Chapter 1805: The Worst Among the Pitiful
"Let go of me, I’m not your daughter-in-law! Get away!"
The woman forcefully pushed the man, and the man held onto her tightly, refusing to let go. The woman went mad and bit him, biting until blood flowed, yet the man still wouldn’t release her. In the end, the two began to wrestle with each other.
The two children clung to each other, trembling, their eyes full of terror. One of the children had blood flowing from his forehead, a result of reaching out to grab his mother’s leg and being harshly flung to the ground.
Xiangxiang paid no attention to the two fighting adults, but instead waved at the two children, "Come here."
The older child shrank back, while the younger one, bewildered and stumbling, ran towards Xiangxiang.
The older child, fearing the younger one might fall, protected him and could only run towards Xiangxiang.
Xiangxiang received band-aids and iodine swabs from Seventh Captain’s team members and used a damp tissue to clean the younger one’s wound, then wiped it with the iodine swab, finally covering it with a band-aid. She gently said to him, "It’s all better now."
The younger child silently touched the band-aid on his forehead, blinking with Xiangxiang’s smiling face reflected in his eyes.
The older child wanted to take his brother back, but the younger one became stubborn and insisted on staying by Xiangxiang’s side.
Just when the older child was about to lose patience, the younger one suddenly asked, "Why..."
The older child was startled and looked at him in confusion.
The younger one, unclear in speech, asked, "Why... isn’t she my mom?"
The older child lowered his eyes, unable to answer.
He also wished their mother wasn’t their mother.
He looked with envy at the children hugged by their mothers, knowing those mothers wouldn’t be willing to leave them. Only his own mother would choose to fling his brother away mercilessly, and wouldn’t hesitate to kill them for freedom.
"Not leaving." The younger boy suddenly reached out and gently grabbed Xiangxiang’s hem.
The older boy was terrified, fearing Xiangxiang would fling his brother away because of his dirty hands.
But she didn’t.
The younger brother wasn’t flung away; instead, he was gently given a piece of candy.
It was a candy that looked very sweet.
He felt somewhat envious of his brother.
But he didn’t dare, didn’t dare act like his brother.
A piece of candy was handed in front of him.
He froze, filled with disbelief, raised his head, and stared at Xiangxiang, "Is this... for me?"
Xiangxiang nodded with a smile, her gaze gentle.
She was always very gentle with children.
The boy wiped his little hand on the hem of his clothes several times before finally reaching out to take the candy. He didn’t eat it but carefully tucked it in his pocket, thinking of using it to comfort his brother when he cried.
The younger boy had already put the candy in his mouth, and the milky sweet flavor spread in his mouth. He closed his eyes happily, "So sweet, so fragrant..it’s the best I’ve ever eaten..." he expressed his joy with unclear speech, and when he opened his eyes and looked at Xiangxiang, they were full of admiration and affection.
Xiangxiang felt a pang of heartache because of this gaze.
It’s just a piece of candy.
But it made the child so happy.
It shows how much hardship this child usually endures.
Taking a deep breath in and slowly exhaling, she calmed the bittersweet feeling in her heart.
She looked at the woman wrestling with the man; the woman clearly didn’t want to stay in the mountains. The two children were likely thorns in her eye, and there was no way she had any maternal affection for them. She probably either hit or scolded them.
Precisely because the woman ruthlessly pushed the child, indifferent to the child’s bleeding forehead, Xiangxiang despised her, even unwilling to save someone like her.
Perhaps this is why some pitiable people have qualities that make them detestable; not every pitiable person deserves sympathy. Some are truly the worst among the pitiable.
