Chapter 106: Secretary
On the other side of the door, the office of the Student Council was revealed. It was a long, rectangular room with a comfortable sofa set placed at the front, bookshelves lining both side walls, and three tables positioned at the far end.
Two of the tables were placed facing each other against the side walls, while one stood at the centre before the front wall. At one of the tables, Sophia sat quietly, reading through some documents, while on the other side sat a striking young man with short, sleek blonde hair, wearing a polished monocle over his dark, focused eyes that were fixed intently on the book in his hand.
Seraphina settled onto the sofa with effortless grace, while the trio took their seats on the opposite sofa facing her. Sophia paused her work as soon as she spotted them, an excited smile blooming across her face. She quickly rose and made her way towards them, settling beside Seraphina with barely concealed enthusiasm. Max and Vlad greeted her warmly, and she returned their greetings with equal cheerfulness.
"Since you have already met our cute vice president, I will skip the introduction," Seraphina said, her tone soft and casual, before shifting her gaze to the young man still seated at the table.
"As for him, he is the head of the Discipline Squad of the Student Council, Raphael Starveil," Seraphina introduced, gesturing gracefully towards him.
"Starveil?" Vlad raised an eyebrow, hearing the familiar surname. ’Is he related to Aria Starveil?’ he wondered briefly but kept the thought to himself. He barely knew Aria well enough to inquire about anything regarding her personal life.
Max and Vlad greeted him from their seats on the sofa. Raphael raised his head, warmly returning their greetings with a faint, polite smile before turning his focus back to the book in his hand.
"Do you only have three members in the council?" Vlad asked Seraphina. The number seemed far too low to manage the welfare of all the students in the academy.
"There used to be five, but two seniors left the council when they reached their third year," Seraphina revealed, her expression turning slightly wistful. "That is why we are hiring new members to fill the old roles and add a new one as well."
She gracefully crossed one leg over the other as she revealed, "Max Caldren will be our Fiscal Officer from now on."
"Y-yes, Miss President," Max answered in a loud, nervous tone, sitting with his back ramrod straight and his face pale as parchment. Although he seemed absolutely tense in the room, he was also the one having the most natural reaction to the situation. As someone from a noble aristocratic family, he knew exactly how high Seraphina’s nobility truly stood. Her father held influence comparable to that of a Duke, after all.
"Come, Max, I will tell you the details about your role," Sophia said warmly, guiding him towards her table with a cheerful wave.
Seraphina turned her eyes to Chloe, who was sitting awfully close to Vlad, their thighs touching even though there was enough space for two more people on her other side.
"Chloe will be the vice head of the Discipline Squad. There are many delinquents in the academy, and it is difficult for Raphael alone to keep them in check."
"So I need to beat up delinquents?" Chloe asked, her face perfectly neutral.
"Raphael will give you the briefings about your role," Seraphina replied with a soft chuckle, pointing towards the table.
Raphael called Chloe over to his table, where he began explaining the rules and regulations in a calm, measured voice.
Now that only Seraphina and Vlad remained in their seats, Seraphina leaned back comfortably on the sofa and said with a beckoning gesture, "Come here."
Contrary to the protest she had expected, Vlad surprisingly obeyed. He rose from his seat, moved around the low table placed between the sofas, and settled beside her with an appropriate distance between them.
"You have become quite obedient, commoner," Seraphina said, her tone carrying a hint of intrigue.
"I saw the post by the Scriptorium Club on the Five Rising Stars," Vlad said, ignoring her obvious jab. He looked at Seraphina with a warm smile, his narrowed crimson eyes meeting her pink ones as he continued, "Thank you for concealing my rank."
"Don’t flatter yourself," Seraphina scoffed, rolling her eyes dramatically. "I only intervened because I wouldn’t allow my father to be ridiculed for offering an enrollment letter to a mere commoner."
"Nevertheless, it saved me quite a lot of trouble," Vlad replied with genuine gratitude in his voice.
"So annoying..." Seraphina muttered under her breath, her eyes lowering. From her storage ring, she drew a finger-sized glass tube filled with shimmering green liquid. She extended her hand towards Vlad, her face turned deliberately to the other side.
"It will relax the mana circuits strained from Mana Backlash."
Vlad understood her gesture immediately. She must have read the post about him suffering from Mana Backlash. Although he was completely healed after forming the Draconic Heart, he still accepted the gesture.
"Thank you, Sera~" he said in a low, teasing tone that only Seraphina could hear. The name immediately caused her to flinch, her ears slightly turning a faint shade of red.
He grabbed the potion from her hand and chugged it down in one smooth gulp.
Ding...
[You drank Mana Circuit Enhancement Potion.
Your Mana Circuits have become more robust.]
Vlad could feel the warmth of the potion spreading to every nerve and fibre of his body, a soothing wave of energy flowing through him. Although the amount of mana his circuits could channel remained the same, he could now push a higher quality of mana through them without strain.
"That was really amazing," he gasped, looking down at his own hands in wonder.
"Of course it is," Seraphina said with a smug, self-satisfied smile, returning to her usual bratty demeanour. "You need at least this much to be my secretary."
"Your what now?" Vlad asked, raising an eyebrow in suspicion.
"You will be the Secretary of the President," she declared, flicking her hair back with practiced elegance. "You’ll prepare my coffee, organise my schedule, bring me all proposals and complaints, arrange my meetings, sort through my paperwork, remind me of important events, and handle any trivial matters so I don’t have to."
With each task she listed, the frown on Vlad’s forehead only grew deeper and more pronounced. "Basically, you are asking me to become your errand boy in the academy as well," he concluded, annoyance clear and sharp in his voice.
"You are quick to catch on," Seraphina replied, the back of her fingers resting delicately under her chin. "I look forward to working with you, errand boy."
She was about to rise from her seat but then paused midway and revealed, "I need to talk to you about something in private. Meet me once everyone has left."
