Chapter 547: Chapter 541: Shadow’s Dominion
Weeks had passed since Selene took full control. The city no longer felt like a place where people lived. It pulsed. Black veins ran through every street and building, throbbing with stolen life. The shadow web had matured into something alive, feeding on the population in cycles of engineered ecstasy and terror.
Massive spectacles in the central square kept the masses hooked—public executions where traitors dissolved into writhing constructs, followed by waves of artificial bliss that left survivors begging for more.
Rebellions flared in the outer districts, desperate and quickly crushed. Atlas watched it all from the edges, his body changing faster than he could track.
Selene looked like a girl in her late teens now, but her eyes and voice belonged to something far older. She sat on a throne grown from the web itself, fingers tracing patterns in the air that made the veins around her pulse brighter.
"The weakness beyond our borders ends today," she said, her tone flat and ancient. "Extend the web. Consume the lands. We will build an empire of strength."
Clara stood at the base of the throne, armor fused with shadow tendrils. She had led the military expansions without complaint at first, but resentment boiled under her skin now. "As you command," she muttered, jaw tight. Her forces mobilized within hours.
Atlas received his orders directly. Selene’s voice echoed in his skull as the black arm attached to his shoulder twitched on its own. "You will lead the assault on the border town of Varnhold. Crush the resistance there. Prove your place in the new order, Father."
The arm had grown stronger, semi-sentient. It moved sometimes before Atlas decided, driven by hunger for the web’s power and Selene’s will. He hated it. The nausea never left him anymore.
Varnhold sat on the edge of the old territories, a fortified town held by Lara’s resistance cells.
Atlas marched at the head of a shadow host—hundreds of corrupted civilians turned into twisted soldiers, veins pumping through their skin. Night fell as they approached. The assault began without warning.
Veins erupted from the ground like spears. Defenders on the walls screamed as the shadows drained them dry, pulling their essence into the web.
Atlas charged the main gate. His arm lashed out, ripping through barricades of scrap metal and wood as if they were paper.
Enemy fighters swarmed him. He tore into them, the arm feeding greedily, converting their bodies into more shadow mass. Blood and screams filled the air.
A wave of twenty men rushed him with makeshift spears. The arm extended, forming jagged claws that impaled three at once, then slammed the rest into the dirt where veins finished them.
The dopamine rush hit hard—the power, the dominance. For a split second, Atlas felt invincible. Then the nausea returned, stronger. These were people. Some had been farmers until the web reached them.
He pushed the thought down and kept fighting, monstrous feats blending into the nightmare around him. Constructs rose from the fallen, shambling forward to overwhelm the town’s last defenses.
That’s when the ambush hit.
Lara’s team struck from the flanks, using the stolen Selene fragment like a blade. The artifact flared with disruptive energy, severing Atlas’s connection to the main web for precious moments.
Clarity slammed into him like cold water. The constant whisper in his head vanished. The arm went limp for a heartbeat.
Lara appeared through the chaos, rifle in hand, face grim. She had aged in the weeks since their last clash—hardened lines around her eyes. "Atlas! This isn’t you. Fight her. We can still stop this."
They clashed in the middle of the ruined street. Atlas’s human hand blocked her strikes while the arm recovered.
"Lara... you don’t understand. She’s too deep now." His voice cracked. She begged him, raw and desperate, outlining the plan with the fragment. For a moment, he nearly turned.
The arm surged, trying to strike her down. Atlas redirected it at the last second, slamming it into a group of resistance fodder instead. Bodies flew. Blood sprayed.
"Go," he growled, covering their retreat. "Take the intel. Find a way to weaken the core." Lara’s core team slipped away with critical data on the fragment’s potential to cut Selene off from parts of the web. The connection snapped back fully. Pain exploded through Atlas as Selene’s presence flooded him again.
Back in the city, punishment came swift. Selene forced a deeper merge in the throne chamber. Veins wrapped around him, pumping shadow essence directly into his veins.
Memories flickered and died—flashes of his old life, simple moments with family before the resets. The arm convulsed, gaining full autonomy for stretches. It moved on its own, fingers clenching as if testing new freedom.
Clara found him afterward in a side corridor, away from Selene’s direct gaze. "She’s overreaching," Clara said quietly, eyes darting. "The web is spreading too fast. We could work together. Limit the damage."
Atlas didn’t answer, but the seed was planted. He stood alone later on a high balcony, staring at his arm. It twitched and shifted without his command, whispering Selene’s directives in a voice only he could hear.
In the distance, fresh veins burrowed toward new villages. Smoke rose on the horizon. Irreversible. The web was claiming territory now, turning the Regency into something far worse.
Days blurred into the next crisis. The Lilith convergence struck without mercy.
Multiple advanced echoes—titans fused with corrupted Reset technology—smashed into the expanded borders. These weren’t minor threats. Towering abominations with shifting geometries and stolen power signatures tore at the shadow veins.
The web defended itself, but the feedback loops amplified everything. Parts of the network began consuming the realm indiscriminately, threatening total collapse.
Selene directed from the core, her form glowing with unstable energy. "Prove your loyalty, Father. Lead the defense. Hunt the remaining cells while you do it."
Atlas was thrown into the front lines. The arm took over more often now. During the first clash, it seized control completely. Atlas watched from inside his own body as the limb extended into massive tendrils, draining a lesser titan of its essence.
The titan roared, reality bending around its form, but the shadow hunger pulled it apart piece by piece. Rebels caught in the crossfire died the same way. No distinction. Just fuel.
Lara’s resistance struck amid the chaos. The fragment activated again, weakening Selene’s hold on vast sections of the web.
Clara saw her opening and redirected loyalist forces, trying to isolate the throne chamber for her own play. Betrayals layered on top of the war.
The battle escalated into something realm-spanning. City-sized shadow constructs clashed with the titans. Ground split open. Skies darkened with corrupted energy.
Atlas became a one-man horror in the middle of it, arm dragging him through the fray. He ripped chunks from a titan the size of a building, feeding the web while his mind screamed.
The final fracture happened at the ruins of the original pavilion—ground zero for so much of this nightmare.
Selene possessed him fully there. His body moved against his will, hunting Lara through the debris. Internal struggle tore at him. "Obey," Selene’s voice thundered in his skull. "No more weakness." Atlas fought every step, muscles burning, mind fracturing further. He reached Lara’s position just as Clara converged too.
The three-way clash wrecked the site. Atlas under Selene’s control traded blows with Lara’s precise, fragment-enhanced strikes. Clara attacked from the side, trying to exploit the possession. Shadow constructs and titan remnants collided around them.
A massive feedback wave from the web nearly consumed everyone. Atlas broke free for one critical instant—long enough to turn the arm on a converging titan instead of his allies.
The drain weakened the creature enough for the defenders to finish it, but the effort cost him permanently. More of his humanity burned away. Memories of his daughters faded into static.
They repelled the convergence at great cost. The titans fell, their corrupted tech dissolving into the web. But Selene emerged transformed.
She fully merged with the network, becoming its goddess-like core. Power radiated from every vein across the expanding territories.
Clara was sidelined immediately. Selene stripped her of direct command, binding her to lesser duties. "Your ambition serves no purpose now."
Atlas received his final binding. The arm integrated deeper, turning him into the eternal shadow enforcer.
He stood on the edge of the transformed realm as new storms gathered on the horizon—signs of larger Lilith forces mobilizing. His body felt like a shell. The arm moved constantly now, scanning for threats, whispering commands.
Lara escaped with a small group and the fragment, bloodied but unbroken. Her vow carried on the wind: a long war ahead.
Atlas heard Selene’s voice fill him completely. "We are the end of weakness, Father. Forever."
The realm stretched out before him, veins spreading like roots into the unknown. Permanent. No way back. The shadow empire had begun its true reign, and he was its monstrous heart.
