Chapter 546: Chapter 540: Daughter’s Web
Weeks had passed since Lilith’s first real strike on the city. The Regency still stood, but nothing felt the same. The streets pulsed with shadow veins under the pavement. Buildings grew darker, sharper, as if the city itself was learning to hunger.
Selene had grown again. She looked fourteen now, maybe fifteen, with a face that carried no softness and eyes that weighed every soul in the room.
She sat on the throne that used to belong to the council. Clara stood to her right, arms crossed, jaw tight. Atlas stood to her left, his right arm hanging heavy at his side.
The corruption had spread past his elbow now, black veins crawling under the skin like living cables. It moved sometimes when he didn’t tell it to.
"Every citizen will receive a mark," Selene said. Her voice was calm, adult, final. "A small connection to the web. It gives strength. It gives clarity. It removes weakness."
No one argued. Not openly. The hall was full of Regency officers and marked civilians who nodded along, eyes glassy. The web had already reached most of them. It fed them scraps of power and took pieces of choice in return.
Public strength tests happened every third day now. People lined up. Some walked away stronger. Others were drained dry on the spot, their bodies left for the shadow veins to pull apart.
Clara’s mouth twitched when Selene spoke. She had been pushed to military command only. No voice in the core decisions anymore. Atlas caught her staring at Selene’s back more than once. Calculating. Hungry in her own way.
Atlas’s job was simple. Enforce. When the web flagged resistance, he went. When someone tried to hide their mark, he ripped the hiding places open.
The arm helped. It always knew where the weak points were. Sometimes it pulled him forward before he decided.
That morning the central nexus exploded.
The blast shook the keep. Black smoke rolled across the sky. Alarms screamed through the web, feeding straight into Atlas’s head. Selene’s voice followed a second later.
"Father. Handle it."
He was already moving. The corrupted arm burned hot as he ran through the transforming streets.
Alleys had grown longer, twisted. Veins throbbed along the walls, reaching for anything warm. Civilians scattered when they saw him coming. Some bowed. Most just tried not to be noticed.
Lara’s people had hit hard. They used Lilith artifact fragments—stolen pieces that could cut the web for short bursts. Three nexus pillars were down. Pockets of the city had gone dark. People were screaming in those zones, suddenly free and terrified by what they had become.
Atlas tracked them through the web. The arm pulled him like a bloodhound. He leaped rooftops, crashing through a crumbling wall when the direct path was blocked.
Bricks exploded outward. His hand closed on a fleeing rebel’s shoulder and drained the fight out of him in seconds. The man crumpled, eyes empty.
The chase stretched across the old market district. Lara’s network had grown. They had weapons now, stolen tech mixed with Lilith scraps. Gunfire cracked.
Shadow constructs rose to block them. Atlas tore through both. His arm punched into a construct’s chest and drank it dry, feeding the power back into him. The hunger rose sharp and familiar. He wanted more.
He cornered a cell in a collapsed warehouse. Old faces. People he used to drink with in the early days when the Regency was still a dream. Lara stood at the front, blood on her cheek, Lilith shard glowing in her fist.
"Atlas," she said. "Stop this. She’s not your daughter anymore. She’s eating the city alive. The veil is tearing—more Lilith echoes are waking every day because of what she’s doing."
She tossed a data crystal at his feet. Images flickered when it hit the ground. Selene growing too fast. The web spreading like cancer. Storms gathering at the edge of reality.
Atlas’s arm twitched. The hunger wanted to drain every one of them. Selene’s presence pressed into his mind through the connection.
"End them," she said, soft and cold. "All of them. Or I will take what is left of you."
Lara looked him dead in the eyes. "You still have a choice. Don’t let her finish the job."
The arm surged forward on its own. Atlas fought it, muscles screaming. He managed to redirect. His hand closed on two rebels beside Lara. They dropped instantly, life sucked out. The others scattered. He let them. Lara met his gaze one last time, then ran.
The nexus repairs began immediately. But the damage was done. Resistance had proof now. Real proof. And Atlas had let key leaders escape.
Selene summoned him that night.
The throne room was darker than before. Veins covered the walls, pulsing in slow rhythm with Selene’s breathing. Clara stood in the shadows, watching everything.
"You hesitated," Selene said. She stepped down from the throne, smaller than him but towering in presence. "I felt it."
She reached out. The web surged. Atlas’s arm burned as she tried to push deeper, to merge further and burn out the hesitation. Pain exploded through his skull. Memories flickered—early days, Selene small and laughing, the original plan for a better city. They shredded one by one.
Then something slipped.
Selene’s control faltered. Her face twisted. For a second her eyes showed raw hunger, deeper than anything Atlas had felt. The web around them flickered erratically. Distant thunder rolled—Lilith storms waking again.
Clara’s eyes narrowed with interest.
Selene pulled back, breathing hard. "Fix yourself, Father. I will not tolerate cracks."
Atlas dropped to one knee. The city’s web pulsed unevenly outside. He could feel the coming storm.
The echoes arrived three days later.
Multiple Lilith fragments struck at once. Smaller titans—twisted mockeries of the first one—crashed through the outer districts. Storm fronts rolled in, turning sky to black glass.
The shadow web tried to defend and ended up feeding them. Civilians caught in the loops became living conduits, screaming as power tore through their bodies.
Clara led the conventional forces. Guns, constructs, barriers. She fought like someone trying to prove she still mattered. Selene directed everything from the keep, her mind spread through the entire web.
Atlas was sent to the worst sector.
"Stop the resistance," Selene ordered. "They are striking during the chaos. Kill Lara if you find her."
He found her in the ruins of the old pavilion where everything had started. Her people were hitting a titan’s flank with artifact charges. The creature roared, shattering buildings. Shadow and void energy clashed in the air.
Atlas landed hard. The ground cracked under him. Lara turned, weapon raised.
For a moment they stared at each other across the battlefield.
Then the titan swung. Both of them moved at the same time—Atlas’s arm smashing into its limb, Lara’s shard cutting deep. Hate-filled alliance born of necessity. They fought back to back for minutes that felt like hours.
Atlas ripped through void flesh. Lara planted charges that exploded with anti-shadow bursts. Clara’s constructs joined from the other side, firing relentlessly.
The free-for-all turned brutal. Atlas saved Lara from a falling chunk of building only to have her shoot a construct that was about to impale him. No words. Just survival.
Then Selene had enough.
The arm seized. Atlas’s body jerked. His own hand turned against his will, reaching for Lara. Selene’s voice filled his head, whispering commands.
He fought it with everything left. Muscles tore. Vision blurred. Inside his mind he screamed at the thing that used to be his daughter.
Clara saw the opening. She redirected her forces, trying to isolate Selene’s focus. The three-way conflict peaked in the shattered pavilion. Titan roaring. Shadow storms whipping. Atlas’s body moving like a puppet while he clawed for control.
He managed a single break. Long enough to slam his corrupted fist into the titan’s core. The creature shrieked and collapsed. The echoes shattered. The immediate threat ended.
The cost was everything.
Districts lay in ruins. Thousands were corrupted or dead. The web had grown stronger from the feeding. Selene’s presence flooded the city completely.
She became its living core. Clara was pushed further aside. Atlas felt the final shift as Selene locked the last pieces in place.
Later, in the smoke and wreckage, he found Lara again. One last moment.
He pressed a fragment into her hand—stolen sliver of Selene’s own power, raw and unstable. "This might hurt her one day. Use it."
Lara looked at him like he was already dead. "Come with us."
"Can’t." The arm burned in warning. "Go."
She disappeared into the ruins with her survivors. Atlas climbed a half-collapsed tower alone. The city stretched below him, choked in shadow. Veins covered everything. The dream was gone. Only the machine remained.
Selene’s voice settled in his head, soft and eternal.
"We are forever now, Father."
Atlas stared out over the transformed realm. His corrupted arm flexed once, independent. He didn’t stop it.
The Regency had won. Selene ruled. And the real war was only beginning.
