Chapter 333: Forty Metres

Three years of failure had produced one success, and the success was forty metres.

Wikk had spent the first year trying to increase the range by modifying the dampener gap, widening it, narrowing it, offsetting the crystal alignment by fractions of a degree. The modifications produced variations in harmonic frequency but not in propagation distance. The signal went through the wall. The signal did not go through the building. Twelve metres was the ceiling, twelve metres through stone, nine through wood, fourteen through open air. The ceiling was consistent. The ceiling was frustrating. The ceiling was twelve metres, and twelve metres was enough to prove the signal existed and not enough to prove the signal mattered.

He had returned to Fizzen’s notebooks seventeen times during that first year. Each time, he read page 341 differently. The words stayed the same, but the space around them shifted, the margins where Fizzen had drawn small diagrams of the crystal alignment and then crossed them out and drawn them again slightly different and then crossed those out too. The crossed-out drawings were the important ones. The crossed-out drawings were Fizzen eliminating possibilities, and the possibilities he eliminated were the possibilities Wikk needed to stop trying.

The second year, he rebuilt the transmission apparatus. He left the dampener alone, the dampener was the source, not the transmitter. The distinction had taken him four months to understand: the dampener gap produced the harmonic, but the harmonic’s propagation was limited by the rune-crystal’s emission architecture, which scattered the signal in all directions at equal intensity. The intensity dropped proportionally to the square of the distance. Twelve metres was not a ceiling but a threshold, the point at which signal intensity fell below the detection crystal’s minimum activation level.

The solution was not a better dampener. The solution was a better crystal.

He redesigned the emission crystal, a single rune-crystal, faceted to concentrate the harmonic in one direction instead of scattering it in all directions. Directional emission. The concept existed in standard rune engineering. Lighthouse rune-lamps used faceted crystals to project light in a focused beam. Nobody had applied the concept to a sub-audible harmonic because nobody had known sub-audible harmonics could propagate through solid media. The application was obvious in retrospect. Everything was obvious in retrospect. In prospect, it took nine months and forty-three failed crystal geometries.

The failed geometries filled a box under the workbench, forty-three crystals, each one cut to a different angle, each one tested and measured and discarded. The box was heavy. The crystals clicked against each other when the box moved, a sound like teeth chattering. Some had extended the range through air but not stone. Some had maintained directionality but at frequencies too low for any detection crystal to register. One, crystal thirty-eight, had reached twenty-two metres, directional, through both media, before the signal degraded after forty seconds of continuous transmission. Close. Not close enough.

Crystal forty-four worked. The geometry was a twelve-facet truncated octahedron, a shape that existed in no rune-engineering textbook because no rune-engineering textbook addressed the problem of directing sub-audible harmonics through solid media. Wikk had arrived at the shape through iteration and correction, and the final correction was Fizzen’s, not from page 341 but from page 112 of volume six, a marginal note about crystal stress tolerances that had nothing to do with harmonics and everything to do with the principle that a crystal under load needed room to breathe. "Give it room," the marginalia said. "The crystal knows its shape. Let it flex." Wikk had reduced the facet depth by zero point three millimetres and the crystal had flexed and the signal had held and the signal had gone forty metres.

The third year, he built the receiver. The detection crystal in Rhen’s calibration bay had responded to the signal because detection crystals responded to all rune-frequency activity within range, a blunt instrument, like hearing a shout in a crowd. The receiver needed to be specific. Tuned to the character of a dampener harmonic, filtering out the background noise of ambient rune activity that saturated any building in a city where rune-lamps lit every street and rune-heaters warmed every public building and rune-amplifiers powered every telegraph office.

The tuning took fourteen months. The filtering took three. The apparatus that resulted, a directional emission crystal mounted on a modified dampener housing, paired with a frequency-tuned receiver crystal mounted in a shielded box, transmitted a rune-encoded signal across forty metres of open ground on the seventh day of Crestmark, Year 505 AF. Workshop A to Workshop B. No wire. No physical connection. Through stone walls, across a courtyard, through another stone wall. Forty metres.

The Mechanist Institute Review Board convened on the twenty-first day of Crestmark. Three members. The session room was on the second floor of the Institute’s Ashenveil headquarters, a room designed for patent reviews and prototype assessments, with a long table, three chairs on one side, a demonstration space on the other, and a window that looked out over the canal district where three hostelries had closed and a fourth had been converted to a Sorrath intelligence front, but nobody in the room knew that and it was not relevant to the proceedings.

Wikk set up the apparatus. Rhen operated the receiver from the corridor outside, forty metres, two walls, one floor between them. The demonstration protocol was simple: Wikk would encode a message on the transmission crystal using standard telegraph notation. Rhen would decode the received signal and write it down. Rhen could not see or hear Wikk. Rhen could not receive the message through any channel except the signal.

The first board member, Elder Kavris, patent review, sixty years of evaluating Mechanist innovations, sat with his hands folded. His expression was the expression of a man who had seen four hundred prototype demonstrations and understood that most of them were improvements to existing technology and none of them had required him to reconsider the laws of rune physics.

The second board member, Assessor Derren, military applications, Mechanist-Army liaison, sat with a notebook open. His expression was the expression of a man who evaluated everything in terms of what it replaced and how much the replacement cost.

The third board member, Researcher Aven, theoretical rune mechanics, youngest appointment to the review board in forty years, sat forward in her chair. Her expression was the expression of someone who had read Wikk’s preliminary report and had underlined the phrase "propagation through solid media" three times.

Wikk transmitted. Six words, standard telegraph encoding: "Signal received. Confirm clarity. Respond."

Thirty seconds of silence. The board waited. Wikk waited. The apparatus hummed, a low, almost sub-audible tone from the emission crystal, the sound of a frequency that existed below the range of human hearing but above the range of nothing.

A knock on the door. Rhen entered. Held up a piece of paper. Written in his handwriting, decoded from the received signal: "Signal received. Confirm clarity. Respond."

Below it, Rhen’s own response, transmitted back through a second apparatus and decoded by Wikk’s receiver during the thirty-second wait: "Clarity confirmed. Distance: 42 metres. Signal strength: solid."

Elder Kavris looked at the paper. Looked at Wikk. Looked at the apparatus. Looked at the wall that separated the session room from the corridor where Rhen had been standing.

"Classification," he said. "Applied rune-oscillation, sub-category: remote activation."

Assessor Derren wrote the classification in his notebook. The classification was a category. The category was inadequate. The category had been designed for technologies that activated rune-devices at short range: door mechanisms, alarm systems, foundry ignition sequences. The category assumed physical proximity. The category assumed line-of-sight. The category assumed the signal could not pass through walls because the category had been created before anyone knew signals could pass through walls.

Researcher Aven said nothing during the classification. She watched Kavris write it. She watched Derren copy it. She waited until both had finished before she spoke. She paused.

"How far?"

Wikk looked at her. "Forty metres is all I’ve tested."

"Why?"

"The courtyard is forty metres wide. I’d need a longer courtyard."

Aven picked up the filed classification, the paper with Kavris’s precise handwriting, the words "applied rune-oscillation, sub-category: remote activation" centred in the classification field. She read it. Set it down on the table. Looked at the apparatus, the modified dampener housing, the directional crystal, the shielded receiver box. Three years of failure compressed into two devices on a demonstration table.

"That’s not what this is," she said.

Wikk nodded. The nod was the nod of a nineteen-year-old Gnome who had spent three years listening to a signal that went through walls and who had just heard someone else say the thing he hadn’t been able to say because saying it required a vocabulary that didn’t exist yet. The vocabulary would come later. The categories would come later. The military applications, the commercial infrastructure, the intelligence implications, the transformation of a civilisation’s communication architecture, all of it would come later, and all of it would start here, in a session room on the second floor of the Mechanist Institute, where a Gnome with three fingers on his left hand showed three people a signal that passed through walls and two of them filed it under the wrong category and one of them said, "That’s not what this is," and none of them knew what it was.
